I wasn’t aware this place had shut until now. Personally I found the place to be a brash and noisy pub that, if situated anywhere else, would be the sort of place that would be spewing out troublemakers at closing time. That said, if you wanted somewhere to watch sport, this was probably the best place in the area. There were at least 5 well placed screens and whilst the beer selection was rather standard (Pride and Bombardier) and unimaginative, it was reasonably priced and service was quick even though the place was heaving with punters getting ready for an England match. The interior was a bit pub by numbers with little in the way of focal points or features but comfortable enough and I was able to find a seat despite the crowds. Also had a well placed pool table, not exactly common in Mayfair. Not the greatest place but it does leave a bit of a hole for this type of place in this area.

Had a nice visit here in late 2007 and popped in early on a Saturday afternoon hoping for a repeat. As it turned out it was to be their last Saturday as a pub. Said to be closing on June 27, 2008 so that Sainsburys can expand. Met a barber who lamented he'd been visiting the place for 40 years...
Most of the lines were empty as the pub wheezed its last breaths.

good cheap drinks for the area - sadly closing soon.......

Cented, my dear fellow why didn't you challenge this oxegen thief to a duel?. If i owned this pub I would personally overhaul all the staff in their and start over again, with a slick and professional bar staff. Who the hell does he think he is talking to you and your wife like that, in future you should just walk away from these places and then the owners would soon see the errors of their ways. Remember it is us good burghurs of London town that pay their wages. I cant believe the amount of reports on BITE that have encountered the same treatment for rude, surly and aggressive bar staff. People wake up and dont stand for it. demand quality.
|
I encoutered the rudest barman I have ever come across yesterday. At first he virtually shouted at us for standing in front of the wrong part of the bar, rudely telling us we'd never get served if we stood there. Then when I asked for a hot drink for my wife he basically suggested that he couldn't be bothered to make it as he wanted to serve other customers. Finally, we went to order food to which he told us that they only wanted to make burgers, despite several friends managing to order non-burgers off the menu from a different barman.
I won't be returning any time soon.

Hi i'd just lke to say a few things on this pub, The Samuel Pepys has had the same manager for 3 yrs whom has turned it in to a great place. The manager is Female... If you get the chance to pop in do so as the staff are friendly and helpful where possible, the food is good, can get quite busy at lunch times and sports evenings! Great place to watch any sport, there are 3 plasma screens a small LCD at the rear which is also a non smoking area and 2 other televisions, and a full size pool table. Opens at weekends till 6-7pm depending on the sport finishing times, closes at 11pm Mon - Fri. Looking forward to seing you...! Manageress.

Oh no! How the mighty fall! This pub has deteriorated beyond recognition in the past few weeks. There is a new manager who seems set to reduce costs without regard to the fall in the quality of service. On my last three visits there has been no food service at all. On the one before that there were rumours that the first orders may be able to get panninis, yet to no avail. The air-conditioning seems to have been switched off which has rendered the pub extremely hot and smokey (don't expect to wear the same clothes again until they've had a thorough wash).
However, the best example of the pub's demise is the customer service that has sunk without trace. Last night the pub showed two football games yet only one was being watched which forced everyone to cram in to the front half of the pub. I spoke with the manager to explain what was happening and ask if he could at least show the main game on more (if not all) of his TVs. He said without any reference to my question "I am the manager, you don't argue with me, you can't argue with me". I anot joking, that was actually what he said. So, last night we drank our last drinks in the Samuel Pepys. Anyone know a good pub near Green Park that shows the football?...
|
Very good pub in a tucked away situation, although not too far from Green Park tube. It's certainly not a "going out" pub but it is great for watching sport as it has six tvs with good quality/sized screens that are well spaced out throughout the premises. Plus, even when it's busy, it tends not to be rammed. Despite some comments, I have not known it to be smokey.
The beer is very good too - Adnams is well kept and served in branded glasses. Good variety of lagers (for those who like that sort of thing) as well. I can't say that I have tasted the full extent of the menu but what I have had has been good and reasonably priced. There's a good mix of steaks/burgers/pastas/salads and a few others plus there are several choices for vegetarians.
Grumbles - few too many city types in suits but guess this is inevitable with the position of the pub.

Forgot to mention but back in the days of interim hours; open at 11.00am close at 3.00pm open again at 7.00pm until 11.00. Between these times we used to hop accross to "Ruby's". Does anyone here remember that place? Wonderful sleazy club with lots of professional girls. Man we had fun!
|
I used to run this pub with another chap years ago and I have to say it was probably the best time of my life. We used to work a system whereas all staff had regular breaks and we could go down to Ye Grapes and have a chat or hop accross to The Washington Hotel and have a drink with Alan. We new all the professional girls and they would meet their clients in our pub. We got hounded by "The Sun" during the Monica Coughlan and Jeffrey Archer Situation. We had known gangland villians coming in, top high profile celebs and politicians all intermixing, known journalists who would ALWAYS turn a blind eye (I guess they had to). I had to go into hospital one time for an op and I got visited by some of the regulars and villains and I became quite a celeb myself in St MAry's Paddington. What fantastic memories I have of this place.

Great atmosphere in here for watching the football on Saturday (just a shame about the result but I digress...) perfectly good beer and extremely efficient staff, would definitely go back for more

Fantastic pub. Not too crowded on a friday night, not too smokey either. Prices extremely reasonable for Mayfair. Baileys comes in chocolate glasses, which is excellent.

Recent refurbishment has turned it into a good drinking hole. Drinks are reasonably priced and it also has a pool table. Is also the only pub in Mayfair with sky TV!!
|
For Mayfair this pub is extremely well priced. Good for sports, clean and good food. bar staff are always a pleasure to chat to. guy with the long pony tail is very good and very quick. overall a good pub.

The geezer with the long ponytail is an odd one, but pleasant all the same. Docor is slightly dark but they have recently installed flatscreens and show Sky sports. There are better pubs in the area to go to but if you want a bargain beer then this is your place.
|
Guy with the ponytail is very friendly and funny, perhaps he was just rushed off his feet!
|
not bad if you want somewhere less full of tourists than Henry's around the corner. beer is okay but I would stick to lager in there. With regards to the food, is this place owned by Wetherspoon's????
|
Tried this place 3 times now at lunchtime. First time was great, food was cheap, atmosphere good and efficient service. Next two times were dire due to the slowness of the service. We had to leave without receiving our food on both occasions as we had waited 45 minutes and had to get back to work.

The food is overpriced and very basic. Drinks are reasonable apart from the spirits. The staff are ok apart from the guy with the ponytail....the pool table is very popular
