Choice pretty much the same as when Blackthorn was here, although they seem to alternate one of their Beers . Prices pretty cheap. Bar and Lounge.Sky telly.

A traditional old pub just next to the arches, this has had a bit of a spruce up as far as I recall from my previous visit, although that was a few years ago. The pub is divided in to two with the lounge bar to the left and the public bar to the right. Both bars have doors out in to the garden which seemed to be a popular spot with its covered and heated seating.

The lounge bar is a long room with wood flooring and burgundy paintwork on the walls, along with several old black and white photographs of the local area. A curved, wood panelled bar counter is on the right and a large plasma is mounted up in the back corner, although this was not in use on our visit. Seating was some type of grey vinyl benches all around the perimeter with small bar stools elsewhere. An old tiled fire-place was opposite the bar, there were old beer bottles up on shelves and a number of disco type lights were on the ceiling. The public bar to the right is a little more sports orientated, with a couple more TVs that were in use, a pool table, darts board and table football game as well as the usual fruit and quiz machines. A large mural was painted on one wall.

Service at the bar was a bit hit and miss, on several occasions there was nobody about although this may have been because they were serving in the other bar. To start with, it all seemed very pleasant and much better than I recalled. Then someone approached with a large speaker and mounted it on a wall bracket just next to us, and proceeded to clamber around the seating trailing cables behind us. It soon became evident that was in preparation for karaoke, so we made our excuses and left at this point.

Beers on tap were Bombardier, Doom Bar, Tribute and Caledonian Autumn Red. Ciders were Stowford Press, Thatchers Gold, Blackthorn and Black Rat dispensed from a barrel sat on the end of the bar.

Been in and out of here a few times since I last reviewed, but had a more frequent spate of visits lately due to EXCELLENT Hopback Summer Lightning being available for 2.65 a pint!!! Mega friendly, though industrious landlord, and as has been seen before his good nature is reflected in his good humoured punters, when Bristolians can be a bit frosty and unwelcoming. Landlord is also a Billy Joel fan, which is liable to be played loud, but no one can be totally perfect I suppose.

Didn't get offered any dodgy dvds on any visit,Mr Pergola or whoever you are if you get offered any more can you get me "Westbury Wives" Volume 14-its the only one I need for a full set. Ta.

Great little boozer.

In the glory days when Scott and Jan ran it, this pub was the best in the area by a distance. Nosedived after they left, but seems to have been gradually improving recently. Good place to watch live sport, two decent sized rooms, each with outdoor seating.

Particularly recommended for those who enjoy being pestered every half hour by someone flogging pirate DVDs.

good old fashioned style sort of pub , bar lounge ,garden at the back . friendly customers ,and bar man . choice of 4 real ales that included moles mole catcher , and greenock knocker .price 2.50 a pint , a price which was synonymous with the area . with prices like this i'll have to considering reregistering as Bristol six drinker .

Nice pub which appears to be keeping their beers better of the last year or two. I sincerely believe it to sell one of the best pints of Bass around. It's also good because you can buy a pint, and take it to Indian Fast Food next door: Just remember to tell the bar person you're doing this! They have an agreement with the curry house.

Not a bad little pub well visible from the severn beach line railway, opted 4 a reasonably well kept pint of deuchars "over the top",other brews included bass and mole's. The sports coverage played through all the speakers was a bit intrusive though and spoilt the atmosphere somewhat, 6/10

Stopped visiting regularly after Scott and wife(I called him Ian in previous review) left as did those who I'd be here to meet. However was tipped off of an improvement and on my visit found an industrious barwoman serving a good pint of Caledonian Over the Bar at a reasonable 2.65. Smiths were on jukebox at a good volume. I'll be back.

It lost it's charm when Scott and Jan left, and when Dan left, the beer quality went downhill.

I think most of the locals left then, i'm not too sure as i have only been back since thrice.

The Cat seems to be back on course. Live footie is now a regular feature - no more last minute phone calls - "they're not showing it at the Cat. Where are we going?"

But it's not just a footie pub - live music, good (extended) garden, good mix of clientele, decent beer and proper cider. Were doing home-made pizzas recently but not sure if they still are.

Best proper pub on this bit of Glos Road.

Have been going here for 2-3 years. Really decent pub. And it is just a pub, no pretensions. Good ciders and beers. Will show most sport on request. Great mixture of clientele and never any trouble.

Recently opened up more of the garden out the back which is good. I'm sometimes put off going down on a Friday because of the live music that can overpower all conversation (if you're not in the garden). And there is pool table, darts, table football, jukebox and quizzer. Can't get bored!

Could anyone tell me where Scott and Jan have gone, their nephew would like to get in touch but didn't realise they had left the pub.
ginaskinner - 13 Jun 2008 20:59
Enjoyed my Xmas visit. Went in by accident, but were happy with a pint of the Moles.

Could probably do with a spruce-up.

Nice easy mix of locals and students, worth dropping in for.

Ian and wife have moved on,the new bloke started promisingly (loads of ale, vibrancy) but it seems to have dropped off lately(rancid bogs, rancid beer). Goes to show the difference a good landlord/landlady makes.

I think shitbin is a bit harsh. Decent boozer with good beer and cider, i.e. not just fizzy piss. Used to go quite a lot to watch footy but got fed up with their preference for showing rugby / buggering about with what sport they were showing on tele.
Moog - 19 Jan 2008 22:20
Walked past this place many a time thinking 'That looks like a bit of a shitbin'. Went in and was vindicated. To be fair, the cider was pretty reasonable and it was friendlier than it first appeared, so it's got the basics right. I'm by no means a fussy man, but even I'm not adversed to the *occasional* scrub down with a bit of soap.

Had several nights in here recently. Sociable landlady/landlord/barwoman with pierced gob. Moles ale was always excellent.Bit smoky.

A great pub! A new pool table has recently been installed to cater for a popular 'winner stays on' format. Table football and darts are also on offer. Lots of local regulars and a sizable student contingent rub shoulders in beer induced harmony. Very friendly pub with friendly staff makes this pub a pleasure to visit.

Decent honest, friendly pub - no frills and has escaped being ponced up or themed.
A good spilt between quieter lounge and lively bar. Pool table in the bar. A mixture of local characters and students.
Graduate types and chinless students tend to look down there noses at it - sign of a half decent pub if you ask me!
Black Rat and Thatchers Gold for the apple lovers.
iyers - 21 Jul 2006 12:12
A great one this and surprised it's not already on here. An unspoilt boozer basically, friendly and a varied crowd from regulars, students and bikers. Plus they have some home brew, "Moles Ale", worth a taste though a bit on the weak side. Footie on and a pool table.
