user reviews of the Oxted Inn, Oxted

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The one positive thing to say is at least JDW are consistent - even in leafy Surrey.

Packed solid with pissed up boozers at lunch time on a Saturday, including one very loud gentlemen in sports gear.

Two tables unoccupied - both filthy.

So why come? Well, its in the Good Beer Guide so thought I'd get a tick. The real crime here is the real ale was very poor. First pint died during pulling. 2nd, a Windsor Knot - was hazy and lifeless. Unsurprising, as in a packed pub, everyone else was on lager.

4 star - and they were for the food - which was quick, cheap and decent.

Called here last evening for a meal, about 7pm. And left quickly, as the majority of the tables had not beem cleared after use* - whether because of laziness or staff shortage, or both.

Pretty much your typical Spoons. Service is generally quite slow and the place could do with a good clean. Being next to Morrison's parking is never a problem.

I have occasionally used this pub in the past and it does depend at what time of day one chooses to visit. It's a large establishment with seating outside and during morning weekdays it's quite pleasant for a Wetherspoons, largely because it's possible to move away from any old plonkers who may be in attendance.
During the evening, however, it becomes the favoured location for fat females with tattoos and baby buggies accompanied by their equally fat and tattooed male counterparts wearing the ubiquitous baseball cap.
Oxted used to be a nice little country town inhabited by well turned out people but the barbarians broke through the economic barrier some time ago and Wetherspoons was their inevitable destination.

Bit Like a Fish Bowl, typical Spoons but better than most, depends on what time of Day you visit as to level of Service, food has much improved

The pub has been under a different manager for around 10 months now, and is a great place to meet friends for drinks or go out and eat. The staff are all friendly and nothing seems too much bother for them. Unlike most Wetherspoon pubs, it has a lot of natural light, and makes for a pleasant atmosphere. It isn't the newest of pubs, and could do with a lick of paint here and there, but when you take into account all of the above along with its location and very competitive pricing, it is your best bet in Oxted and the surrounding area.

Still about as downmarket as it is possible to go, sad old alkies sponging benefits propping up the bar in the morning, and drunk chav teenagers in the evenings. Depressing.

Does this place take on a different persona at night? We were there recently for a Friday lunch. Adequate for the chain. Shoppers and oldie lunch crowd in. No problems noted. Beer ok.

This pub is a disgrace, noisy, unruly yobs are left to do as they please. Tables are covered in dirty glasses and plates. The so called Duty Manager doesn't even look over 18yrs and is not in control of the premises.
Don't bother.....

Nice enough place to eat and drink especially if you are on a budget
Timbosxm - 12 Aug 2009 03:15
interestin that people say it has got better. it is more expensive to eat the reheated 'stuff' that arrives in frozen bags, and the beer costs more than before.. Are there less fights now or do they clean the vomit up more often?

I remember JDW (Tim Martin?) saying that they would have no TVs, no music and be a cheap place for grown ups to go to. He then abolished the 'discount on a double' pricing as it could cause trouble.

We now enjoy wide screen sky news 24/7 and vomiting chav 16 year olds screaming at each other. The 'doubles' promotions are back and in the daytime it is where the DSS checks get spent by the local loonies, most of whom dont even live in Oxted

This place has ruined Oxted town centre and JDW should be ashamed of the poorly managed souless dump they have created.

the pub is looking a lot better now than in the past and the food is much more consistent. The staff are really helpful and i enjoy drinking here with my friends. Everyone is really friendly bar the odd exeption and the beers and wines are great.

I quite like the inn, the team there now really shine! they seem warm positive! food is better in there now, we went in there for curry club the other week and it our best spoons visit ever!!

I was speaking to the duty manager about how the pub looks alot friendly, safer and cleaner than in previous years. He seemed like a very focused young individual!

We can only hope it gets better!

I love this pub and I LOVE Ross!

Well escteach i would have to disagree, I find the staff and management very good and always willing to help. Maybe you you were just upset about staying in on new years eve when you wrote your comment!! Would love to know why you found the management and staff rude and uncaring?
Oxtedguy - 7 Jan 2009 14:23
I went to this pub for a drink whilst waiting for friends. the worst experience ever. It is full of ignorants including the staff management were also rude and uncaring I won't wait there again I would rather wait in the car.
escteach - 31 Dec 2008 23:28
Still full of inbred pondlife. If you want to drink packed shoulder to shoulder with ignorant chav kids, its ideal. Its called 'The Pond' locally for good reason.
chavbaiter - 4 Jul 2008 16:51
Cheap beer being a JDW.

Strange location tucked up by the station accessible via cod-ElephantandCastle-lite subways.

You can imagine this place getting interesting at certain times of the week. Bit of a tavern famine that end of Oxted so it might have to do.

I had the misfortune to miss my connection at Oxted on Monday and had 45 minutes to spare so dropped in here for a refresher. I really wish I hadn't, even though there were several ales on at a very cheap 1.69 a pint. I thought I thought Hammer must have been filming a horror movie nearby and I had strayed into the extras' canteen. According to BITE it's 0.6 miles to the next nearest pub, which is a just a tad too far in the time allowed, so I'll make sure I don't miss my connection in future . . . .

This pub has changed for the better over the last few months since it has been taken over by a new management team. I have been drinking in here for sometime and now it is a nice place to go for a meal or just a few drinks with my mates.
Oxtedguy - 27 Mar 2008 08:55
Well, Kentishman, you're obviously not aware that one of the young teachers from Oxted County School was seriously assaulted there last year, by some of his own (drunk) pupils. The case was front page news in the Surrey Mirror, and was tried at Redhill Magistrates Court.
chavbaiter - 25 Mar 2008 22:41
disagree with most of the reviewers. I have heard there has been trouble at the inn but I have never seen any. I quite regularly use the pub as a cheap place to eat early friday night. wide range of cheap guest beers. teachers from local school use the pub - hardly pond life!

and no i am not a teacher.
kentishman - 25 Mar 2008 21:45
Weatherspoons should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this place to stay open. It single-handedly manages to increases the crime and assault statistics for Oxted, and I say that as a local taxpayer.
chavbaiter - 21 Mar 2008 11:10
Crawling with inbred chav vermin from Hurst Green. Well known to Surrey Police for drunken assaults, no normal people would go near this place in a thousand years. During the day it serves sad old alkies and DHSS nutters their 9am pints.
chavbaiter - 21 Mar 2008 11:07
Known by many as 'The Pond'.

This is because of the pond life that go there.

Nasty

Not a bad pub for beer, but it could do with a proper cleaner and a lick of paint. Cute guy in the kitchens!
Bletchman - 2 Aug 2007 00:25
If you love banter applenty and plenty of chavvy filth, then the Inn has it all. As a Uni student you can't afford much, and so the Inn becomes an obvious choice....However I love this pub so much that even if I had the money to spend elsewhere I wouldn't, I couldn't. This pub has been my second home since the tender age of 16 and no matter how many people I've seen spew in the toilets, or how many fights I've witnessed, this pub will always hold a special place in my heart
teevey - 21 Dec 2006 00:35
This is a great pub during the day and a friendly lively one in the evenings.
I've never had a bad meal here and the staff are always really really friendly.
Service can be slow at times because of the amount of meals being ordered. A++++
pcove8 - 4 Dec 2006 19:21
Vicky Pollards and "bling", The Oxted Inn is detrimental to society, a breeding place for the scum of the earth. Friday/Saturday is fight night, service terrible, understaffed, undereducated stay well clear if you value your health.
Critique - 3 Aug 2006 14:12
Dreadfull - full of drunk chav children. Suprised by JDW to allow this. Beer cheap however
bigbadbill - 23 Aug 2005 13:20
Convenient as the only pub in 'New' Oxted but pretty average otherwise. Service can be pretty slow - have walked out more than once after waiting an age to get served. Big non-smoking dining area.
Simon - 14 Sep 2004 13:56
Usual whetherspoons, but great staff!
