user reviews of the Golden Lion, Caterham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Usual suspects on tap and some of them were off. However, friendly service and good Guinness. Sit outside on a bench and watch other people carry out important life duties whilst you sup the stout and pontificate.

Never been in here but in the interests of keeping things up to date and using the capitalisation that some posters seem to like.

CLOSED!

Drove past the other day, shut. Windows boarded and 'building site' type hoardings surrounding the big car park area. The latter suggests that its gone for good but who knows. After all, the relatively nearby Whyteleafe Tavern was shut and got resurrected (unfortunately).

Not a very good pub at all, foment of better places to drink around the area.
Run by the people who used to run The Golden Lion. (now demolished)
& the gossip going around is that they won't be here much longer either.

Damp pub, full of plastic gangsters & old people.

AVOID.

Comment: The last of the Caterham pubs Ive visited and what a place. Decor fine but the people and the beer are a bit ropey. As per most of the other reviews on your site I agree this is not a place to visit twice. I hear the people here ran the Clifton which was a nice pub, sadly gone now but I cant see that this can be true as the landlord of the Clifton was damn good.
Returnability: 1

Visited this pub last week for lunch from redhill. Was very annoyed not to get fillet streak and champagne on the 4.95 lunch special! But did have a very reasonable beef caserol and a cup of tea. Will be back again to see this entertainment from the tattooed man, who needs Eastenders?

Could this pub get any worse, well yes.
Now they have a tattooed boyfriend of the daughter who threatens everyone in Caterham.
The grandson is the local graffitti artist who has managed to get his picture on the front of the local paper. (They must be so proud).
They have now started and meal and a drink promotion, that when you read the small print is actually a meal from the lunch time menu with a soft drink or tea or coffee.
Will not be going back soon, and would everyone else to stear clear.

Visited once & won't be back.
Much better pubs in area to drink, but avoid King & queen, & The Pilgrim.

Visited this evening hoping for a meal, but were told they only serve evening food Thurs, Fri, Sat. Otherwise it was quiet, spacious, friendly, well decorated and served excellent Youngs bitter. We will return...

Ive been going to the golden lion for about 6 months now since i moved here at the end of last summer. It is a lovely pub with friendly locals. They have a lovely new barmaid whois very nice and you always get service with a smile. lots of local history all over the walls great atmosphere good pint or bombardier on offer. Fair pricing and an all round good place to go for a quiet drink or to soak up some traditional pub atmosphere. They have a quirky 50's diner out the back which serves a lovely roast dinner on sundays I go in there a lot and the food and service are always good. I'd say avoid sunday evenings though unless you like quizzes as the teams seem to fill the pub at 8. Good beer nice atmosphere and ive not seen anyone barred for coughing yet!

how very odd.

Been in here a couple of times now and really enjoyed it. The beer was in good condition and the contrary to what is reported below the staff were very friendly. The local history and military memorabilia only add to the experience. Recommended.

The good people of Caterham breathed a sigh of relief when the horrible rude and obnoxious family that ran the Clifton for years, decided to close the doors, but that happiness was short lived, as they're back in abundance as new landlords of the Golden Lion. Expect to be barred for coughing, or questioning the beer, or the food.
I can't think there are worse landlords anywhere else in the UK. Loud-mouthed, rude and rotten to the core...

It has now been totally transformed into a really nice pub with loads of local
memorabila items decorating the walls. The restaurant is now an American retro 50's style diner. Food is good and reasonably priced. Background music is old rock 'n' roll to enhance the atmosphere. We went as a birthday and danced as well. As a rock 'n' roller I can thoroughly recommend this venue. Go there, you're missing a treat.

This pub has now been taken over by the people that ran the Clifton and re-opened. Haven't been in there yet but it's bound to be an improvement on it's previous incarnation.
Old_Caterhamian - 13 Jul 2009 12:07
This pub has been closed for months; its unclear whether it will reopen.

This is a truly awful pub! I have moved from the valley and whilst we had The Old Surrey Hounds for fight night, this takes the biscuit!
If you want a poor pint, to be surrounded by 16 year olds being served as adults, and cafe style food menu, try it! Otherwise, take my advice, keep walking!

This has got to be one of the worst pubs I've ever been in. Tatty and full of chavs.
