user reviews of the Echo, Gravesend

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Had never been tempted to go in when it was run by the previous managers but the Echo has quickly gained a great reputation since its recent refurbishing under the new managers. Went there to meet friends for a drink and a laugh. The whole evening was great, comfortable sofas, great beer at good prices with Doombar and a guest ale on tap.

Awesome place, had a great singer on Sunday called Chris Till and now that the meat raffles is back on a Sunday it's definately the place to go with the family.

Loving the new garden, and with the music and general atmosphere it's feeling like a party pub on a Sunday!

Highly recommended.

Visited last friday night, Pub has had a major revamp and looks very smart, bar staff are friendly and attentive,
Had a friendly atmosphere and a choice of 3 ales, i forget the names at abv 4.1, 4.3, but Otter was the guest all.

About 65 people in for the evening across the two bars, the beer smelled and tasted excellent - and for the area cheap prices in fact the others reckoned it was the best value pub and the best experience we'd had in a couple of years- and they're pub snobs...

Garden and smoking area are both top notch with some great furniture and playsets for the kids. Would score it 11 if I could.

Perhaps it was sitting outside on an idyllic early summer evening after a brisk cycle from the train station, but this pub really did it for us. Overlooking the amorphous suburban sprawl of Gravesend, the pub has a large outside seating area although the locals - a seemingly civilised bunch - seemed mostly to stick indoors. Admittedly, Gravesend isn't the most idyllic location but the view is leafy and pleasant enough with lots of birds to be seen and heard. The new owners have redecorated and 'improved' the pub in the past few months but they didn't seem to commit any especially heinous architectural crimes in the process. But best of all, it had a great couple of brews on tap along with a very tasty white wine. An especially handy spot if you're cycling or walking the Gravesend fitness route.

Having been a wife of a very social drinker I am the anti christ of pubs, I have a strict criteria that must be met before I will even entertain bringing myself into an establishment. Partly this is because I am a hospo worker and am a massive snob.
I was very reluctant to try out the Echo again after several disappointing experiences when we first moved here. However under duress I went along to see what the New Managers had done to the place. NOTABLY: CLEAN/NEW TOILETS(PRAISE THE LORD)/ LOVELY DECOR and the Garden OMG, an oasis for frazzled parents, completely safe and enclosed with plenty of toys to occupy the demons! Well done!! Super impressed.
Only criticism is there isn't bar food, but you can't have everything and it is only a small pub. Staff are friendly and welcoming. I am quite happy to spend the afternoon over a cold one and some friends.
In fact I am very happy to bring my mother in law down as well!

I've been drinking in the Echo for a couple of years now and can say it's finally blossomed into the pub I always hoped my local would be.

The new management team have spent a heap on renovating the tired decor, inside and out and the garden in particular is now a perfect place to take a young family.

The vibe in the pub has changed too, with much more merriment and an end to the 'tough talk' that some pubs have. One way or another, I always walk out with a smile on my face.

What a difference new management can make!

The pub has had an interior refresh with new carpets and good quality furniture but the overall effect is that it is bright, warm and welcoming.

It's clear the landlady and her husband care about the pub, the clientele and the community - it's telling to hear them both class many of their punters as 'friends' rather than customers.

Perhaps most impressive is the work done to the garden, which has transformed it into a 'destination' for families looking for a friendly drink in a safe environment for the children - with a fantastic play area that really makes the most of a garden that is deceptively larger than at first glance.

We had the pleasure of holding a family event in the garden and the landlady and her staff couldn't have done more for us - all of my guests commented on how impressed they were with the facilities and the welcoming received.

Since then there have been bands, singers and even the odd singalong by the punters - but there is always something going on and laughter and good times are ever-present.

As a Guinness drinker I've always been patient and have never had any complaints about the beer but have been told by friends that the real ale is perfectly poured, varied and with frequent guest ale rotation.

The landlady Trudy and her husband "Stretch" are immediately obvious as a popular couple that are interested in providing visitors with a quality experience without being 'in your face' and this shows from the constant stream of new faces that rapidly turn into regulars.

Finally, and from my personal point of view most interestingly; this pub now boasts what I believe is the South of England's widest selection of prestige vodkas - up to 180 available! Everything from flavoured and unusual tipples are offered up to the real famous heavyweights - you can (and should!) have a complete vodka education in a single evening!!

A bit of a chavvy dive

served by quite an abrupt tall but painfully skinny woman with rotten teeth and horrid breath

I only asked how become they dont have real ale and she snorted it was none of my business. I think while i'm down here working ill give this one a miss next time
TraderTony - 25 Sep 2013 12:27
was shut at 8pm on a Sunday

Last week had no real ale and no bottled cider
SBOILT.PASTARD - 15 Jul 2013 15:22
Only London Pride on tap which I hate, but a really freindly barmaid made us feel very welcome. A town pub so you get what you would expect from that!
Buster_M - 18 Feb 2013 22:37
Dreadfully downtrodden, shabby interior, smelly and dog-earred. A pity, because I've previously had good experiences in here, but my last was not so. The beer was putrid and the air was rancid from stale smoke drifting in from the door to the smoking area.
No drinkable real ale on offer, shabby inside with big bright energy saving bulbs protruding from all directions. Pub has no heating on so the 7 people here all had coats on. Could be a nice pub but much better with the new manager than was with the little short blonde girl who had no idea how to run a pub and was always drunk.
I shall continue to pop in every now and again out of sheer optimism, but I wouldn't recommend this pub just at the moment, especially when there are better pubs (in every respect) within a few minutes' walk.

Was a great ' local' for years, but ruined by previous management, who drove away the regular boozers and old codgers, now full of chavs getting lagered.

Often have no bitter available, not the pub it was !!

Recently refurbished in the past few weeks. Lovely local battle cruiser. I'm lucky enough to live nearby and the atmosphere in there has always been friendly and upbeat. Well worth a visit
