Beers not particularly well looked after and just an ok place to go. Mainly given over to food these days.

This place was Camra's pub of the year (Somerset) a few years back. It's hard to see why, now it's just a non- descript sort of a pub. Maybe it's changed hands, but right not it wouldn't rank very high on my list of Somerset pubs. An uninspiring selection of ales, and anyway it's mostly a dining pub, so no where to sit and enjoy a few beers even if they were enjoyable.

Called in for a beer during half term. Beer was fine if a little too cold.

Like the review below we also popped into Pebbles Cider bar....well worth a visit. Otter served straight from the barrel. 8/10 for Pebbles 7/10 for here.

Watchet is another lovely village in North Somerset. Slightly larger than some of the others we visited, it does seem to have a few decent drinking establishments. Despite winning the local CAMRA award, we found this to be the worst of 3 we visited last Saturday evening. All tables were taken with diners, leaving only the stools around the cramped bar area as options. All of these were taken too. With waitresses rushing buy with food and plates, it makes the whole experience uncomfortable and you can feel rushed. Granted this was on probably one of the busiest evenings of the year, with a festival being held in the village. But we found Pebbles Bar and the Esplanade Club far more amenable. Beers on were Summerskills Westward Ho! Butcombe Bitter, Quantock White Hind & Ringwood Best. Cider was Thatchers Traditional. Incidentally Pebbles Bar (not listed on here) is not too far away and has been converted into a cider bar with 15 ciders and a musical theme (they hold live music sessions). We met the owner and his parents and wish them all the best with their new venture.

Fabulous food. Great ale. Welcoming friendly and laid back. What more could anyone want?!

i havent been down to watchet for a long time it's nice to see that not much has changed, the star is still the best pub and it shows it was far the busyest in town. as to the previous comments did they go to a different star inn or was it the fact that they don't like change for the better???? or perhaps a libary is better suited.

Not been the same since old Keith left I'm afraid. The persistant use of young, untrained waiting staff really grates. Award in 2010? I dont think so - it went straight down hill when it changed hands.

Very good and friendly pub, worth visiting for drink and food.
3 or 4 ales and 3 ciders available when I visited, also worth seeing what bottles they have tucked away if nothing takes your fancy. I had several sessions over a week and the ales was spot on every time, mostly from local brewers as well. Only thing I would like changed is to mix the styles a bit, having said that when the Cotleigh Golden Seahawk arrived I stuck with that for the evening.

Food was also very good, especially the duck as a Sunday roast. Luckilly i was aware of the opening times so managed to get a table. Worth booking if you want to eat at weekends.

Called in here on Saturday afternoon at 2.30pm. "Sorry we are closed"!!

Watchet was packed with day trippers and they were closing, must have plenty cash!

What has happened to this pub, has it changed hands? nothing like the pub it was, food not as good, I expected to go for a quite drink, and they had live music, ( not the sort of pub to have music its far too small)
All the staff were very young, didnt smile and found it hard to make conversation. The pub needs its old quantness back, where has it gone?

Called in for lunch here, off the West Somerset Railway.
Excellent pint of Butcombe Bitter, so I had another one, with a ploughman's lunch of local cheese and ham, which was good value.
Very friendly and attentive staff: an excellent pub, with a good family atmosphere.

This seems to have received some mixed reviews and I can see why, I'm a bit confused about it too. Very foody and not just your lunchtime sarnies either, they cater for the full blown meal or nothing. All the tables indoors were being used for food so we ventured out the front, which is a pleasant area, though the benches are a bit rickety. My beer was a touch on the dubious side. I wasn't really that impressed with the pub all in all.

Not hard to see why this pub has won the CAMRA best pub award 2010. The two beers I tried were excellent. The staff were also friendly. The food was also excellent but a bit on the pricey side. Certainly the best pub I tried during my stay in the area. Well done Star Inn.
ICTGringo - 12 Jul 2010 21:45
the so called brewer could not be more wrong, the ale is the best i've had!!!
well deserved award for the ale, spoke to the land lord about these comments and was told the temperature of all the ales is regulated by cask marque, every month this is another visit like a health check but on real ale. kep up the good work. oh and the food is good to well worth a visit.
alechaser - 12 Jul 2010 15:19
totaly agree with the brewer i have drank in the star for many years. The last time I mentioned the cold beer. God forbid how it won this award!!!!

re-visited the star the other saturday early doors. dear oh dear. barmaid terminally slow, beer very cold (exmoor) and the place full of elderly tourists having f and c. is this really the camra pub of the year for 2010 in somerset ? must be a parallel universe to the one I currently inhabit for this place to be voted best over at least a dozen much better beer pubs in the area - the carew, the bicknoller, the white horses washford and stogumber and the farmers arms west hatch.......and thats just for starters. jesus!!
thebrewer - 21 Jun 2010 21:26
Nice exterior but inside a bit nondescript and maybe lacking in character. More of a foody place than a serious watering hole it had an interesting menu and seemed popular with the lunchtime eaters. Good selection of local and west contry beers:-these were labelled as served at "cellar cooled" temperature but I found my pint a bit too cold. If you are in the area looking for some food then I'd say give it a go, but it didn't grab my imagination as a place to stop for a little real ale session. It gets my marks for being a pub (just), its selection of real ales and for retaining bar stools.

Can see why they are CAMRA accredited with a lovely selection of beers on the one I tried from the Cheddar brewery, lovely pint. Holiday season so expected it to be busy but was suprised just how busy for a Tues lunch.

Food portions were large and so was the price. Don't understand why these pubs don't offer smaller portions and more realistic prices. The barman was friendly, lives next door apparently, and I was going to sample another lovely beer only to be stuck behind a customer who seemed to be ordering drinks and food for a coachload. The queue got bigger, the barman didn't panic, but no one else popped behind the bar to help.

One elderly couple left, and after a long wait so did I without another drink, had the steam train to catch so couldn't wait long.

Lovely pub, good barman, fantastic beer but overpriced food and a lack of staff at busy times. Would have been 9/10 for the beer alone.

Called here three times during our weeks stay in the area. Otter, Exmoor and Cotleigh beers enjoyed in this GBG listed pub. Also had their fish and chips which was good value. The problem here could be balancing the demand for food places with that of the drinkers.

Nice feature made on what was an old spiral staircase, with beer pump clips, bottles, etc - almost a shrine to good beer!! Keep up the good work!
JBGatelad - 28 Jul 2009 19:06
Changed hands recently and it shows. Service is slack and uninterested but the beer seems to have survived. Otter was good and there were three other real ales to choose from if you could catch the barman's attention. Only stayed for one cos I just couldn'. t wait that long. The only pub in Watchet worth going to if you don't like tattoos or fighting.
thebrewer - 26 Jun 2008 21:35
Still worth a visit.
YoYo - 15 May 2008 21:46
very good ales pub....lots of choice and very good condition, very busy at tourist times tho
alehouses - 25 Mar 2008 13:53
Tried to sample some ale in this pub on Sat 9th June 2007 only to be turned away. The Landlord said he wasn't taking anymore money even though he stated that he didn't close until 16:00 hrs, we turned up for a quick pint at 15:45hrs. It's a grand shame as we had made a special journey after reading about the pub in the GBG. Had to settle for a pint of Doombar in the Bell Inn just around the corner which was open.
BINKOS - 11 Jun 2007 15:13
The best pub for visitors. Very nice decor, nice atmosphere, friendly staff. The fish and chips are great on a Friday.
