user reviews of the Bountiful Cow, Holborn

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This place would get a terrible rating as a pub. Luckily, it's not a pub, it's a steak restaurant that sells beer. I'll give it an 8 for that.

Although this place had Adnams, Hophead and Landlord available alongside a very limited draught selection on my recent visit I wasnt that keen as it was dimly lit and had some rubbish lounge music playing making it feel more like a restaurant than pub.

I dont plan on returning here.

Not keen - only used to go there when I worked close by but is overpriced and too small

and now after complaints from residents you aren't allowed to drink outside so it gets very packed inside

give it a miss

I have been to the cow quite a few times as I work around the corner, but I am sorry to see it slip into a sorry state.

I am sorry but the last few times I have been I can report:

rude / apathetic service
poorly cooked steaks (overdone)

and for the price, just doesnt cut it any more.

I'd like to write in more detail, including the already open bottle of wine delivered to the table, complete with a smirk,
but havent the time, or feel its worth reliving the memory

Popped back yesterday for lunch, it was pretty quiet in there.
Still good food and good service but couldn't help noticing all the particles of food stuck in the furrows of the table...probably enough for a burger I suspect ! So come on BC, scrub those tables, I don't wish to be put off my steak before its served up !!

I have been here lots as I work around the corner and quite frankly its my fav place to go in this horrid area of London; great ale, great service and the food is terrific.
What more can I say...

My experience at the Bountiful Cow was nothing but pleasant - steak was fantastic and cooked just right (and I asked for rare), sauces tasted freshly made and the red wine a perfect match for the food. Atmosphere was good too, just the right amount of buzz. Check it out.

I cannot agree with the other reviewers here on either

a) Beer quality
b) Food quality
c) Staff quality

But before this, let's start with a plus point or two

PLUS POINTS
============

1. It has a rather fetching neon sign of a steak being grilled
2. It serves beer

Errrr....that's it.

Let's start with a). Yes there is a reasonable selection of beer, but quite frankly they haven't cleaned their lines since they moved in and it's not especially pleasant. Moved to lager, which frankly tasted like it was purely cleaning fluid so drank very slowly while awaiting food. The worst part is we'd just been from the Cittie of Yorke which was rammed, to a pub that looked frankly like the 6th circle of hell per. Dante

b) Food

Now this I disagree with entirely. I am not a steak regular, but I do know what a steak should look like. So when I ask for a steak to be 'medium rare' I expect it not to come mooing and bleeding all over my plate. Absolute rubbish. Furthermore, the steak is left open in the firdge in direct violation of every H&S regulation I am aware of.

We asked for bearnaise sauce. What we got was burnt savoury custard. At 17 a pop, I'd expect something that didn't taste like cardboard. We asked for peppercorn sauce to replace our custard. That came back as if it had been spat in. Obviously they couldn't be bothered to make fresh sauce so just zapped in the microwave. Will never eat there again as it's quite honestly the worst steak I've had since foolishly going into an Aberdeen Angus steak house in Leicester Sq. At least I was p1ssed.

c) Staff

I don't know what is wrong with you, but you work in a very quiet, skanky pub in Holborn. It's not the West End, you're not attracting WAGs, Z-Listers, or anyone remotely interesting. So please don't turn your nose up at me when I order, and when I return your food because it tastes like your fat a55 sat on it, don't go to kitchen, come back with new brand of turgid filth, and spend the rest of the evening staring at me and my wife and sniggering. You're lucky your place is run so ineptly that they've mistaken your snooty attitude for 'professional'.

In short - Don't come here, and hopefully it will close soon and be replaced with anything that isn't the Bountiful Cow. Maybe the Hairy Bullock? It would reflect the steaming pile of dung this place is.

I was in the area again earlier this week and with the summery weather fancied a pint of Adnams bitter. It tastes best on the pier in Southwold but that was not an option. Having decided to boycott Roxys other establishment a month ago I thought I would visit the Bountiful Cow. It is not really my sort of pub but I have visited a number of times in the past as it does a decent pint. Despite being themed it has a lack of atmosphere and character.

The service was lightning quick compared to the Seven Stars and the service polite if not especially friendly. The beer was really good so much so I quickly decided to have another.

I have eaten here a couple of times in the past. Considering the cow theme the burger was disappointing - better than the usual burger chains but far inferior to say Fine Burger. Expensive as well. On another occasion I had the Welsh Rarebit this was fantastic but vastly overpriced for what is cheese on toast.

Overall worth a visit for a good pint or two but not somewhere to go for the evening.

A bar over 2 floors with, as the name suggests, a cow orientated theme, (cowboy film posters, horns etc). Under the same ownership as the nearby Seven Stars, with a similar range of drinks on offer, (Adnams, Harveys, Bitburger, Aspells etc).

On the Saturday evening that we visited, almost all the tables were reserved for diners, (though there were stools at the bar to sit at), so it's really aimed at diners rather than people popping in for a casual drink. The Harveys Best was OK, if a little warm, but I can't see that I felt like staying for more than one.

It is a mixture of a Jazz bar/club and a Steak House. Strange layout, but brilliant food - as you can guess from the name they serve very nice steaks.

Not my type of pub at all.But i can see it being popular with a certain city type crowd.Guinness was ok(ish).Jazz music in the background(not my cup of tea)
The food did look good though.I dont eat burgers, but was sorely tempted to try theirs.
If you a Barrister and you want to taking a client out, could be a good choice but not really a night out with lads type place. And id think the owners would thank me for saying that.

Serves a good pint of Adnams (Broadside was off but nothing to say this was case, not even a tea towel over the pump) but there's not much else I can say in favour. Decor is bright, cheerful, and funky, staff friendly and the food looks good. Seems popular with loud suited City types and East European builder types who like to sit at the bar, eavesdrop your conversation, and glower at you over the top of their drink.

More a bar than a pub so not my style at all but others will love it.

This pub has now changed its name to the Bountiful Cow, and has strange cow shaped ash trays. Overall it is a bit strange but not unpleasant.

Owned by the fantastic Roxy Beaujolais, of Seven Stars and Three Greyhounds fame, this new pub/eaterie not only has great beer (Adnams on tap) but superb steak and chips.

Cheerful service in a funky post-sixties setting, with comfortable booths and a friendly bar.
