Friendly rural pub. I hadn't been before. So I have nothing to compare it with. But the one side of the bar area did seem a little bare and devoid of character. 4 ales were on - George's Cockleboats Best Bitter & Wakering Gold, Dark Star Espresso & Maldon Sailing Barge Dawn. CAMRA members can get 20p off per pint. But there's no discount for halves. But it was far cheaper than the Victory Inn in Ashingdon anyway. No sign of any food as yet. But there weren't many people in on my Wednesday evening visit.

Just letting you all know it's open again. Looks like the bar has been freshened up and they're selling a nice selection of beers from George's in Great Wakering.

They're hoping to open the kitchen in a few weeks (towards the end of June I think)

Nearly a year after I posted the previous note, there may be some light (literally) at the end of the tunnel for the Shepherd & Dog. I drove past yesterday evening and the internal lights (downstairs and up) were on, as well as the car park spotlights. Maybe just a security measure, but there seemd to be a different car parked down the side. I do hope this is a sign that this landmark pub/restaurant is finally getting some much-needed TLC.

Sadly the Shepherd and Dog has bitten the dust and now closed. Seems to have been shut for at least a few months as the car park is looking overgrown and there's a caravan parked there for some reason.
Whatever happened seems to have happened quite quickly as all the furniture is still in there and you can see a pile of bills on one of the tables.
Nothing about the closure online. A real shame, as was a lovely country pub/restaurant.

Visited on 25 May in the course of a walk. The manager could not have been more friendly and pleasant, the food was excellent and the beer very good too. Will be arranging another walk soon to revisit this great pub.

turned up yesterday lunch time with 25 afc wimbledon fans before southend match and we were looked after brilliantly.3 beers on all from wibblers brewery.hoppy helper which was very good but run out after a couple of pints.apprentice beer and best.tried the burger from the BBQ,very good quality and others were very pleased with their food.only downside was no brewers gold.well worth a visit if in the area.

Brewers Gold! literally its sold here and is liquid heaven! Along with 3 other real ales which constantly change but are always local and kept very well, i have not had a bad pint here for 6 months!

Al the manager is always happy and chatty, they serve locally sourced food of a good quality and always seem to have a constant flow of customers.

A great pub, run well and definately worth a visit.

Things are really looking up at this pub which oddly enough lacks any interest on this website despite its superb collection of real ales. Now Kim is front of house, the place has taken on a more friendly feel and efforts are being made for special nights - cheap beer, discounted food and so forth. The owner is really making an effort to lift things here and this deserves recognition. it's in the middle of nowhere but give it a go - you won't regret it.

Sadly, my friend and I have stopped coming here - at least not so frequently. It's not as warm as I last suggested and people have been sitting around in their overcoats. Please put the fire back on and we'll come back!

The unfriendly barmaid has long since gone and been replaced by those who consider that every customer matters. I do wonder sometimes how it pays it's way - long way out of town and few there after 9pm. But the beer is well worth the visit. Always warm in winter (the place not the beer!) and a lovely place to relax in. I'll cetainly keep coming here.

Marvellous interior - typical Essex village pub i.e. hih standards and very friendly. Not totally convinced by the beer (Titanic) - stick to local ales !

Excellent pub - easily one of the best in the area with good management, regular and honest locals and ale of high quality. Service is usually first rate. Well worth a visit.

Always a good selection of well kept ale at this pub. It's just unfortunate that the barmaids serving the ale have a big problem with smiling.
