Yet another victim of TMYNS! The "Pub Killer"!
TMYNS - 1 Jul 2014 12:36
The gaff is boarded up. Looks permanent. Executive housing I venture. What will happen? Will 'Spoons be employing doormen from now on? Interesting times....
anonymous - 27 Apr 2011 09:15
What! No, I don't believe it! DC gone!
anonymous - 26 Apr 2011 17:08
Well, after much dark side and light side stand off's, the place has finally closed down.

I understand the following happened late last night and was confirmed this morning by the brewery.

Thed area manager asked the green shirted scouser to take over. 7 hours later, no answer could be fathomed due to the moronic like drivel coming from his chops.

The drunken slob landlord was finally removed from the upstairs abode, the boards are all up and the place is closed for good.

The footy team, the darts team, the card school, the green shirted village idiot, where will you all go now???????
Trainspotter55 - 26 Apr 2011 13:32
Fantastic - Business As Usual!
anonymous - 12 Apr 2011 16:55
The landlord has been suspended for being pissed on duty, stealing the quiz night money and generally being an all round idiot.

Every pub has the village idiot. Step forward the chap in the green Liverpool shirt (8 years out of date, and looks like is been washed over 500 times)

If yuo have been to the moon, he's done it twice, better and will make the story more miserable that when you started.

Now, the dark side and the light side of the pub. The dark side is festooned with locals who moan all day about the price, beer, staff and just about anything if anyone cares listen.

The light side, they just want to be over the dark side - but don't have the banter. Hence green shirt wanders around all sections with 'you didn't wana do that' approach.

Darts night on a Thursday. I recently turned up thinking it would be a poor night. 8 lads, having a laugh, good food (for a quid) and not a bad night all round.

Customers vote with their feet. The footfall is still the same and noting will change - unless the gaff closes down.

Long live the dark side and long live the landlord when he gets binned next week

Trainspotter55 - 3 Apr 2011 17:53
Well, look on the bright side.
At least Sky Sports has gone!
The_Final_Arbiter - 7 Mar 2011 13:37
More dark mutterings. Regulars banned. Uncomfortable amount of drink/drive related incidents impacting regulars, Sky sports gone. Rumours the brewery want shot of the place. 'Spoons' open in Broadstone, and general grumpyness about the landlord .....

Interesting times .....
anonymous - 7 Mar 2011 13:34
Ive started going to this pub for the live entertainment. Had a couple of meals there too (invariably opting for the delicious steak pie). The atmosphere is friendly and Lee (the landlord) is particularly helpful when Ive phoned to find out what entertainment is on. The pub is warm and clean. Well worth a visit :-).
Matthew_Y - 8 Jan 2011 15:13
I actually went into the DC the other Saturday. Same old unfriendly cackers with their card school. Restaurant devoid of punters.

Beer is still fine, though.
anonymous - 27 Oct 2010 10:23
You would like to believe that wouldn't you! Can only 'brewery plants' and the Landlord say positive things about the place then ?
reg.ular - 26 Oct 2010 16:47
reg.ular.

Is that the landlord calling?

anonymous - 14 Oct 2010 11:09
For someone who no longer drinks in the Darby's TMYNS always has a lot to say, usually it is incorrect drivel with the latest rant being no different !
As for the changes mentioned, gossip between pub's is very interesting as we have heard completely different !
The term 'Cackers' always amuses me too as the Darby's has always had a varied range of customers as do all of the local houses.
I have been a regular in the Darby's for a number of years and always find TMYNS's negative comments on here laughable.

On a positive note, If you are looking to visit the Darby's Corner in the near future, please ignore the drivel on here and go on in, on the whole it is a nice, friendly place to have a pint or two !
reg.ular - 13 Oct 2010 14:14
The word on the wires is that with the successful take over of the Stepping Stones by JD Wetherspoons, the DC is next on the list.

The pub does not fit the profile of the rest of the H&W establishments, and they are keen to get rid of the Darbys.

As a precursor to this, Sky TV is going to be removed, in an attempt to save costs, and to get the Darby's cackers used to a non-Sports Bar environment.

Watch this space......
anonymous - 12 Oct 2010 13:20
Fantastic! Dangerous does the business! Let back in! Nice one, Daz!
anonymous - 20 Sep 2010 09:57
Im just writting a quick message to apologise for my previous comment about the darbys corner I was angry and drunk
daz10 - 10 Sep 2010 19:52
More mutterings. I have been informed that the new landlord is putting up the backs of the regulars.

Now, to an neutral eye, this may actually bode well for the future. A landlord has to serve all of the pub. A landlord has to be neutral. A landlord has not got to be "best mates" with the regulars. Regulars can easily become nasty, especially where "drink" is involved.

This pub has suffered over the 12 years I have attended from the "Dark side" thinking they own the place. This is the bunch of regulars who stand to the right of the bar as you come in, and generally see the place as an extension of their living room.

It is all friendly, but very, very cliquey, and can put people off from using the place.
One odious member of the "Dark Side", regularly clicks his fingers and is very rude to the staff.

Now, if the landlord wants to tackle this, then all well and good. A purge of those who have outstayed their welcome could invigorate the place.

If the landlord is shaking up the dynamics of the "Dark Side", then all well and good.

Watch this space, as they say .....
anonymous - 19 Jul 2010 12:57
Ive been drinking in the Darbys Corner for 16 years now, and have seen many landlords and landladies come and go some very good and some the complete opposite and unfortunately the most recent landlord is on the " complete opposite " side of the scale, this is not just my opinion it seems to be the general consensus of opinion. Surely a new landlord would introduce himself to the regulars " which are the bread and butter of the pub" instead of standing there staring at locals that he cant quite work out, which will wind anyone up, I understand that not everyone likes constructive criticism but when alot of people are saying the same thing surely there not all wrong. IF YOU DONT LIKE PEOPLE DRINKING ALCOHOL GO RUN A CAFE DONT RUIN IN WHAT IS MY OPINION A VERY GOOD PUB (WAS). Hopefully like the rest of the come and go landlords he wont be there for long.
daz10 - 16 Jul 2010 12:21
Another change of landlord, and some of the more colourful regulars have been "banned". Could be the new broom laying down the law, or a true "deserved" banning.

However, now the Stepping Stones has a loyalty card, there are few familiar faces around Broadstone now ....
anonymous - 21 Jun 2010 17:12
I suspect Onehere is a brewery plant, or the new management seeding good posts.

There have been lots of changes, with the Friday disco being especially interesting. Some of the regulars have decamped to the Stepping Stones in revolt.

Also, the cacker count is getting high. Witness the Darby's Corner Facebook page that "liked" a comment from a regular, that was highly racist in nature.

I know of one regular who refuses to go in the place because one of the tattooed harem slappers who drinks there on a Saturday had a go at him for no good reason.

Still, the other locals are raising their game. The Stepping Stones has good beer now, and better facilities (pool table, reasonable lounge, live music), the Goods Yard caters for the Gastro-Pub end, the wonderful Dorset Soldier has better TV sports facilities.

So, there you have it. The cliquey Dark/Light side have made this place an unfriendly intimidating place.

Sup up, lad!
anonymous - 20 Apr 2010 15:07
Having recently moved to the area I thought I would try this Pub, after reading the comments here I was slightly worried that my new 'local' would be a bit of a hole.... well what a PLEASANT Suprise ! I have been drinking and eating in the pub for the last few weeks and I must say it is a lovely atmosphere and the food (although not the cheapest) is worth every penny.
I have taken my family there twice now to eat and we have thoroughly enjoyed every visit.
The staff are friendly and very helpful and although we are not dog lovers we saw one very sweet old Golden Retriever who was no trouble at all !
We will definatly be visiting the establishment regularly.
Onehere - 3 Mar 2010 10:44
January update.

The problem with kids running around the place has thankfully ceased and there are far fewer dogs around as well (real ones).

Thankfully the quiz machine is broken, and, after illness the barstaff are back to full strength.

Wayne has put together a very good team.

I don't know what he has done, but the Tanglefoot at the moment is uniformly excellent. Friday 15th Jan was a classic Friday after work evening. All the usual punters were on top form. An excellent night in an excellent pub.
anonymous - 18 Jan 2010 15:38
Much improvement. I think the landlord has had a word because there are far fewer kids running around now, and the place seems a lot more adult friendly.

There is still the "Dark Side" and the "Light Side" toughing it out, with the Dark Side continually sniping at the hoards of unemployed in the "Light Side".

A great laugh for us neutrals.

anonymous - 29 Dec 2009 13:28
Sunday. Brats running riot again. Wee bairns running around inside and outside (near one of Poole's busiest roads), while mam and dad concentrate on maximising festive cheer. One brat, not more than 4 years old climbs on a barstool near the quiz machine. Another fertal brat kicks the stool away and runs into the gents loo. Injured child's mouth is a mixture of blood and chocolate. All over the bar are empty selection boxes.

Don't get me wrong, the landlord is fine in most respects, but he needs to get a grip on the uncontrolled feral brat situation PQD.
anonymous - 22 Dec 2009 08:43
If the slobbering, smelly dogs were not enough, the pub appears to be taken over by feral, out of control brats. Their 'Mams and Da's' sit at the bar, getting plastered, and the little 'uns run around the bar; fill the loo sinks up with soap and play around with the hand dryers; destroy the bushes in the outside seating areas; and are generally so high because their 'parents' do nothing bu feed them crisps and full-sugar 'pop'.

Hillarious!
anonymous - 15 Dec 2009 10:35
I think that Saturday at the DC must have been a Crufts warm up with (count them) 5 dogs slobbering around the bar, sniffing punters, barking and stiking the place out with their fetid aroma.

Why do they let dogs into pubs? Would you allow a sheep or a cow to roam around the place? No you would not.

I am told that one of the lower orders from the Waterloo estate let his Bull Terrier pee in the bar, then administered a royal larruping to the mutt for it's transgression.

I might buy some rat poison to rid this place of it's canine punters.
anonymous - 14 Dec 2009 14:24
Things have taken an isidious turn for the worse in this pub. The two corners of the bar 'The Dark Side' (on the right as you walk in, near the TV sets) and 'The Light Side' (on the left near the restaurant), have a deepening poisonous relationship. The Dark Side still see the pub as theirs, and treat the staff with uncurtious contempt, akin to a master/slave relationship. The other day, some newcomers were watching the Irish rugby match when one of the Dark Side cackers got 'their staff' to turn over the TV to the Southampton game. Luckily, we got to watch the end of the match.

The Light Side has also it's share of problems, one of the Light Side cackers, who is a Man Utd fan and long-term unemployed lets his kids run riot in the place while him and his missus get plastered at the bar on tax-payers cash.

Like I said, all human life is here. I love this pub.
anonymous - 5 Dec 2009 12:15
6.3/10!?? Drab, unfriendly and full of cackers. 1/10 at the most!!!

wre008 - 27 Jun 2009 09:30
I love this pub. Full of cutthroats and characters. It has an interesting sub-society. When you go in the door, on the left hand side is the "Dark Corner", full of a select bunch of regulars. Often rude to the barstaff, and consider the place their own.
The middle of the bar is usually hangers on and sports nuts watching the telly. The righthand side of the bar is populated by those who cannot get in the "Dark Corner", and so hate them.

Beer is usually good. Tanglefoot is excellent.

Landlady has recently left, and the relief management have done a great job in getting drinking punters in by introdicing a loyalty card. Superb. Also, the new management seem to have fixed the problem whereby the bar staff used to gossip and congregate in the kitchen leaving the bar devoid of service.

Other high points. The food is basic, but good. Other pubs in this 'chain' go for high end food (see St Peter's Finger, Dorset Solder, Jeckly/Hyde (berkshire)), this one, catering (sic) to it's demographic serves better value, but good food, but the Dark Corner still b1tch about the prices.

The Sunday quiz is excellent. It was spoilt a while back by a team of regulars 'mobile phone' optimising' their answer sheets, but the quiz is now well policed. And you get a broader range of punters in, from students, to older quizzers.

I love this place.
anonymous - 19 Jun 2009 12:00
i have to agree with dixon75,we took my husbands mum and kids yesterday lunch time and the blonde lady that served us(not sure whether landlady or waitress)
couldnt have been more helpful.even helping two fussy kids decide wot to order! decent food, not processed tasting and free apples on the bar for customers, nice touch. really nice day.
mmmvodka - 23 Aug 2008 13:46
Firstly I'd like to thank the young blonde waitress who served us on the night when Bohemian Joe was playing his first gig. I didnt catch her name but she was truely excellent in her efficiency, professionalism and her manner, she made the evening a little more memorable.
The food was good too, It was hot, well presented, and tasty to boot.
However, the live music act situated in the eating area of the pub seemed to be quite poorly thought out.
I can understand having a music/vocal act in a drinking pub, or at best in the drinking area of a restaurant, but to have it in the middle of the dining guests just wasnt appropriate.
The live act was rather good, but if you want a quite meal, I'd suggets calling ahead.

Overall a nice drinking pub, and good for a quick bite to eat, but dont bet on it being quiet enough to have a conversation
dixon75 - 18 Aug 2008 09:29
Not what it used to be at all. I know that not everyone is going to like a re-fit and a complete change - but it seems it is getting more quiet by the week. Shame as it's it very nice well kept public house.
shelleycourt - 16 Nov 2007 14:25
sniffsniffdoes one smell another brewery rat, or is this just the patronising ramblings of yet another member of the grey masses who have spent so long being middle class that they have forgotten the long standing traditions behind our public houses??

Heaven forbid people, yes people, actually using them for that most disagreeable of past-times, the drinking of beer!!!

Having run a small business on a local estate for many years I almost feel ashamed to admit that I have, on occasions, frequented the establishment for that very reason, and, sadly, have to also admit to watching the odd football match.alas no more!! For some reason, some faceless brewery-crats seem intent on destroying this pubs character by removing all the things that made it popular!! Customers have already started voting with their feet, and I can only assume that takings must be in free-fall!! Anwayback to our friend below.

QUOTE I have read the reports on the pub from locals and its a shame that they only want a pub for beer drinking and sky tv ,come on lads you can do all that at home ??

How condescending ..if you had SKY TV and enjoyed your own company then home would be the place to be, but locals are more sociable people than that. I assume that at home you have a kitchen??

Traditional English pubs are 300 years old, tucked away out in the country and boost Inglenook log fires.this one falls happily short on every count.

Truth be told its always used to be a sports bar, but then it always used to be busy, popular and profitable too !!!!!!

anonymous - 12 Nov 2007 00:19
I have just moved into the area ,Im not one for eating out but decided to go for a meal with my wife ,WOW what a well kept Pub .The food was fantastic and the service was perfect.I havent seen such a well managed nor clean pub for a long time .I have read the reports on the pub from locals and its a shame that they only want a pub for beer drinking and sky tv ,come on lads you can do all that at home ??.Its nice to see that there is a traditional Engish pub out there. Not a sports bar,THANKYOU VERY MUCH TO ALL THE STAFF AT DARBYS CORNER FOR A GREAT EVENING.
anonymous - 9 Nov 2007 12:06
Ha, that rumour has been hanging around for years! The Eton Mess I had was fantastic and although drinks are expensive, they were no more than other pubs. As for the amazing Angie, I only went in once when she was there and the pub seems more organised and efficient now that she has left. I found most of the staff to be friendly and helpful and I didn't experience any long waits, or see anybody else waiting an exceptionally long time. Perhaps I have been going in on quiet nights but I have never had any problems.
anonymous - 26 Jul 2007 17:04
Well I agree with the last review, when are Hall and Woodhouse going to sort things out.It was running just nicely up until Angie left, she had sorted out many things and it had a nice atomosphere and the food and drink were good. The brewery obviously don`t want the clients.Maybe they are trying to push people away so they can pull this one down as well and put houses there as they have have done elsewhere
anonymous - 26 Jul 2007 15:34
Over-priced un-inspired food...
Inadequately staffed resulting in a long wait for service...
Extortionately priced soft drinks and wine....
Over all, very disappointing on many levels.
first and last time there....

anonymous - 22 Jul 2007 23:27
Nice pub - just a shame about the locals! Constant moaning about lack of Sky TV/managers/opening hours is very off-putting to diners and those of us who just went in for a quiet drink!
anonymous - 16 Jul 2007 15:37
Well Well, shant be going in the derbys anymore, who chose these landlords, how unfriendly the place has got now.Thank goodness there are the Haymoor and stepping stones.
Buzzard - 5 Jul 2007 18:13
What has happened to this pub in the last few months!
The freindly landlady has gone and since then it has gone right down hill.I went in there last week and there was no draught beer because the gas had run out! There has been several people trying to run it since she has gone and what a disaster. The food and beer are not as good and the attomosphere is awful.Come on Hall and Woodhouse sort yourselves out!!!!!
anonymous - 3 Jun 2007 16:10
Having been a frequent visitor to this pub for many years i am dismayed at what has happened. The removal of all the comfortable seats and Sky TV, has turned this place into a wine bar. How anyone can say the pub is better under the current management is beyond me.Cleanliness and comfort are not the pubs main features. I cannot be the only one who thinks this, I have never seen the pub so quiet and empty. Its such a shame, however i doubt that the management at The Haymoor and The Stepping Stones would agree.
geswho - 27 Feb 2007 13:35
please bring back sky and bring back tim and val
export - 25 Feb 2007 14:10
What a lovely place it is NOW the new landlady has brought a breath of fresh air,and the food and beer are so much better. The place is much cleaner and thank goodness that sky has gone so that everybody can enjoy it now!
anonymous - 20 Feb 2007 19:28
Been going to Darbys for years.Angie new landlady happy and very friendly. The pub is always clean, beer and food excellent, atmosphere great.Keep up the good work.
Buzzard - 19 Feb 2007 22:12
Just had a lovely meal in this friendly, lively pub. Obviously a favourite with locals and diners alike. The atmosphere was great and the staff were really helpful. The darbys is a credit to the brewery!
anonymous - 19 Feb 2007 15:46
i think the new landlady is really friendly and helpful, the food was great and the atmosphere was relaxed. much better now the sky tv has gone!!!! less roudy footballers in. the new beer, hare, went down a treat. well done.
anonymous - 19 Feb 2007 11:43
Had a great night - new landlady (angie I think) couldn't have been more friendly and helful. Food good and wholesome and a nice atmosphere - beer was on top form. A great local
anonymous - 18 Feb 2007 17:40
whats happened ???
arrived saturday from the valley's for my annual family visiting trip and all changed !!
the friendly nothern chap and his wife have dissappeard, replaced by who knows who, waited 5 minites for someone to appear and sevre us,nowhere comfortable for the wife and me to sit, really no where near as good as last year...really very poor.....

sister in law introdued us to the haywood....better by far.
welshwizard7 - 17 Jan 2007 21:32
A very good pub, and have had many a good knight and i always get served with a smile.
I hope the landlady is as good as paul and jill.

anonymous - 11 Aug 2006 17:00
Just to say will miss paul and jill but new landlady seems very pleasant
export - 10 Aug 2006 14:36
I don't know who has posted these comments but they are all rubbish, getting rid of the management and saying they are scruffy idiots is so out of order it's untrue.
Paul and Gill are two of the best managers I have ever come accross, they are polite and very professional and are excellent at their jobs.
They will be very sadly missed at the pub and I personally want to wish them all the best in their future.
Oh and one last thing for johnson - 11 Apr 2006 - if you are going to try to have an educated opinion about someone then please learn to spell simple English words, because believe me, you have only made yourself look like a complete fool !
emmie100 - 1 Aug 2006 13:31
looked very uninvitable to look at cos of all the noise, shouting really, so didn't go in, may venture in in the day time.
anonymous - 5 Jul 2006 16:37
Pauls not too bad, but his interest charge on your slate is pretty high, he's making a lot of dosh from the brewary's stock and it's properbly illeagal, never been charged interest on a slat before, other managers in moor respectable pubs don't charge, still if you need a slate in the darb's you dont have much choice.
johnson - 11 Apr 2006 16:13
I see that they are doing the place up, just need to get rid of the rif raf (thats the two dirty and scruffy idiots they call the managment)and the customers will flood back.
anonymous - 6 Apr 2006 11:50
My favourite pub in the area, great for the quiz on sunday evenings. friendly attitude but a bit pricey although it does have a range of Badger Beers including my favourite Golden Glory
Dave - 17 Aug 2004 10:43
more varity than the Haymoor. Very nice place. bar staff are quality
hilary - 4 Jun 2004 23:40
Grew up around the corner, on the Estate. i bought my first pint in this pub when i was 15. Great boozer, had many a wild Export fuelled night in this establishment, i even went out with one of the landlords daughters a few years ago...mmm nice.
luke - 6 Mar 2004 03:37
Royston Vasey type attitude pervades this fort-like boozer.
Went to school around the corner and once got thrown out of here for pissing out of a window. Ended up having a fight outside with a load of 50 and 60 year old nutters with hands the size of barrels.

Erm, yeah.
