visited a few times recently, always busy, good atmosphere, good selection of beers, ciders, and wines. Food good. Staff on the ball, always looking for customers to be served. Reasonable prices.

This pub has recently started hosting a live jazz-blues band, who are excellent. They are on one Sunday of each month. The place has also had a small refurb with the covered area now fully enclosed and heated. It remains the best pub in Barnet by a considerable margin...
Visited on Sat the 3rd December with a friend. What a lovely pub with a great selection of ales at resonable prices. Nice atmopshere with a mix of people of all ages a nice fire too that looked like a real one. I live in the south of the Northern Line and I must say I'd go back in a shot, all that a pub should be. The staff were friendly and very efficient, I'm sure I shall return. Well done ! Highly recommended.
I should like this pub - it does a decent pint (though not too many unusual brews), the staff are pleasant and efficient, it has a slightly quirky layout but for some reason I never feel like staying for another pint. Can't quite fathom out why but something about the place just doesn't endear me to linger.
Re. the last reviewer, I am pleased to hear that you liked the Mitre.
Not too sure what you mean by “cold shoulder treatment from 11pm” though. We serve drinks until midnight during the week and 1am at weekends, the latest we legally can. We start advising people politely from 12.15am and 1.15am that its time to drink-up and go. We close the doors at 12.25am and 1.25am respectively. These are late standard opening times for a pub.
Is it possible that maybe you were enjoying yourself so much that you lost an hour or two……if so, its maybe not that surprising that the staff want to go home to bed at these times!
Had a great evening in The Mitre a few weeks ago. Beers were great, and not particularly expensive, atmosphere was pleasant and even the limited, sausage-based menu was ok. However I have to echo the comments below about the cold shoulder received at 11pm onwards, culminating in being herded into the street at twenty past. This put a real damper on the evening. No need for it. Sort this out and you've got a splendid pub.
This pub continues to impress, it's one of the best in Barnet. If you're passing pop in, beer is always excelent and the garden is a fine place to be this summer!
Best pub in barnet. great beer, nice staff, nice customers....
I'm with Gary on this. (Even though he IS Scottish!)
;-)
This is a great pub: juliusgb is obviously a knob - good riddance!
Excellent pub. Possibly the best in Barnet. A good selection of ales, as well as a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Also a plus that the TV is located in the "stables" area as you can make the choice between a quite drink, or a drink with the crowds, most of whom are good craic.
Re. the last reviewer, I (the nasty scot) am the owner and there is no requirement by law anymore to display a sign above the door. My name is, however, displayed on the licence hanging on the wall (as required by law) and various certificates around the pub.
You are obviously completely unaware of your behaviour. You ignored me through 15 minutes of being asked to leave, apart from one sarky comment to the effect that you would finish your drink in your own time. You were the only one left in the pub, then you decided to go to the toilet. I was up at 6am and I was pissed off, but it was you who called me a cu*nt.
We open as late as we legally can and give a generous drinking-up time. I make no apology for expecting people to show me and my staff respect by leaving when we ask. I have lots and lots of nice customers. I don't want you back.
Nasty Scottish manager in tonight, a real glimpse of the old days when it came to leaving time and the necessary trip to the men's room. If a stranger spoke to me like that in the street it would be beyond rude. Having been in Barnet for a year now I was beginning to feel welcome in this pub, and have been inviting my Ale-drinking friends to journey north to it, but after that talking to, by a surly, bitter, aggressive little man but minutes after 20 past, I will never invite my guests here again. AND there is no sign above the door to indicate who the licensee is, so I am struggling to complain to the owner. PS. Those aren't log fires, they're gas - you can tell by the blue flames.
This is where you go if the object of the night is good beer, good conversation and a nice smoking area.
It's a nice pub full of very nice people. Some might say boring but not everyone wants football and loud music everytime they go out. (Though they do have live football out in "the stable").
If I can't face the walk up to the Monken Holt, this is where I end up. Slightly quirky layout, split into smaller areas. Nice log fire in winter. Very well run, prices reasonable and everything I've sampled has been in good condition. Very popular at the weekends, soon fills up with locals so arrive early to grab a seat. Can't put my finger on why it's my favourite but you'll feel the same once you walk through the door.

Very cosy & welcoming as well as having a great range of ale. I was in here the other week before & after watching Barnet FC & the roaring fire in the back room was very welcome in helping me defrost!
Not too sure what Snarling_Mallard is talking about re the layout. In my opinion a fantastically welcoming pub with excellent selection of ales (written up on the blackboard next to the bar).
Comfortable and plentiful seating both in front of the bar area and down its length, plus an open fire. Lovely place and head and shoulders above everything else in Barnet (admittedly not that difficult to achieve).
Beer has improved recently (Wild Hop OPA was nice), staff are friendly and efficient, an old pub with character - it's just what some may call the quirky layout that I'm not keen on. One side of the bar is too high to stand at, the other too small and the three seating areas have a throughother feel to them which doesn't make me feel like this is somewhere I'd like to linger too long. Can't mark it down much for that though as it is well run and the beer is good.
Fantastic traditional ale pub, just a short walk from High Barnet tube station. There was a great selection of beer on offer including London Pride, Black Sheep, TT Landlord, Deuchars IPA and an outstanding Caledonian Double Dark, which I went and sat in front of the roaring open fire in the back room - the perfect way to thaw out on a cold winter's evening. The pub has lots of character and seems pretty popular, given that the front room was packed out when I arrived. Staff were friendly and helpful and as soon as one beer went off, they were quick to ensure it was replaced with something else. Very enjoyable - this will be my first port of call next time I'm in Barnet.
This pub just keeps getting better. Great beers and a good welcome every time. The food is great as is the ever changing choice of beers. Be wary about buying a couple of double Jamesons though!!
good pub - can't fault it
Great pub! Good improvements made by the current Guvner, Gary. This is what a Public House should be, friendly, no yobs, good food, great beer, decent opening hours. It's got everything.
A good and ever changing range of well kept Real Ales, Cider on tap and decent lagers. Food is good too. Traditional interior in keeping with the heritage of the pub and its history. Large well kept garden and the new stable lounge is a welcome addition.
Fine for all the family, fine for Real Ale lovers, best of all its my local :-)
I'm glad too see This Pub is Back to its traditional old self as it was when I used it Regular years ago. Gone are the TVs In my Opinion thats of the one biggest improvements And its back to being a Traditional Old Ale House with some decent conditioned Real Ales on Tap again. I will Definitely pop in again for visit whenever I'm shopping in Barnet Its just a pity its not closer too Muswell Hill otherwise It would be my Local.
In my opinion the best pub in Barnet. Always made to feel welcome and the ale is kept perfectly.
Well said, Gary. It's not easy to strike a balance between keeping the pub-experience pleasant for everyone while not being a spoilsport. Seems you've got it just about right.
What the last reviewer failed to mention was that he was sitting on one of the Norwegion bloke's knees and shouting above everyone else in the pub! Two of the Norwegions returned, in quieter mood, the following night and were served. They joked at how they had been drinking throughout the previous day and how drunk they were when they reached this pub. We try to run a good pub for everyone to enjoy which is free from yobbish behaviour and we make no apology for that.
came here with 5 norweign friends over in barnet to watch the football. they are fans of lower league english clubs, don't ask. we had just had dinner in a local italian and fancied a pint of fine english ale. while finding a table one of the party went to the bar to order drinks. the manager told him we had had enough to drink and that this wasn't the pub for us. sure, we weren't the quietest people in the pub but we weren't drunk or behaving in a disordely fashion. despite the good reviews i won't be trying this pub again and the estimations of the good old fashioned english pub has decreased in the eyes of 5 norweigns.
Now the best pub in Barnet, happy to have it back.

Must agree with Mr Monkfish the beers were very drinakble and well kept. This pub was a surprise to me with its tidy interior and spacious beer garden. Had 5 different beers on today including Deuchers IPA, brains SA and Batemans GHB. Easily the best pub in the area.
Firstly, I must start by chastising my Barnet-based friends for never informing me of this place or arranging to meet me here prior to yesterday! This is a marvellous pub and by far the best I've been to in this neck of the woods. Classic dark wood interior with a nice fireplace and comfortable traditional pub furniture. Raised bar is a nice centre point and the service is speedy and friendly. Range of beers was very good and the Black Sheep and Tribute ales were in very drinkable shape. Prices were reasonable and the atmosphere inside the pub cosy and welcoming. All in all an absolutely splendid pub, worthy of a visit if you are in Barnet at any point.
Very impressed. Arrived in a large group but were immediately welcomed, and high quality food was quickly prepared for us. There's a nice selection of ales on tap here too. The manager (been in place about 6 months, I gather) and staff all said they hoped we'd return soon - and genuinely seemed to mean it. We certainly shall!
The landlord, Gary, who took over this ancient pub in about October 2008, has made it a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours, for locals and visitors.
I visit pubs to drink beer that I know like, to try beers that I haven't tried before, and to do both in pleasant surroundings. That's why I bob in to The Mitre a couple of times a week now.
No fruit machines, no TV, no loud music, no lairy punters. The food is pretty good too.
This really is a most fabulous pub now. I hadn't been for a number of years, put off like most by the missguided attempts by previous landlords to attract the 'yoooth' market. Anyway, a new landlord name of Gary, he has done wonders in a short time. Excellent beers changed by the hour dont worry about daily or weekly! Its like going to a beer festival every time I visit. Great staff, great beer, a welcoming fire in the grate - what else could you want?
This is a good pub and my couple of pints of Adnams were very good. I also spotted Abbot, Double Maxim and another ale that I forget the name of along with some standard lagers. Whilst I was waiting for a drink the governor chucked a couple of regulars out whom he said had drunk enough and along with a few people at the bar I thought that they were fine.
There is a surprisingly large garden out the back and some covered seating in the alleyway under an arch at the side of the pub.
This is a good pub with some nice ales and I wouldn’t mind returning, I’ll just make sure I’m not loud and that I don’t get pissed.
popped in for a quick one, quite some time since the last visit (ah the joys of internment by children). We were pleasantly surprised, fruit/games machines were gone and just a nice quiet atmosphere will definitely come back again
My first visit sine Apr 2007 and beer-wise there is no real improvement which is a shame as this is a nice pub.
A couple of us had pints of Daleside (the guest beer) and whilst it wasn't off, the condition of the beer was woeful and it was not very enjoyable. Even the football was preferable...
Otherwise the choice is Adnams, Greene King IPA and Abbot - not very inspiring, you'd be better off going a bit further along the High Street to the Ye Olde Monken Holt where the beer is much nicer.
Very pleasantly surprised - good range of good quality ales and good atmosphere. Excellent choice of pub for pre-match drinks for visiting supporters. At least the walk to the ground is downhill from here.
First time Ive been back in here today at lunch time for about 6 Years. I must say what a Improvement its Back to its traditional old self as it was when I used it years ago. Gone are the TVs Hooray that one big improvement And its back to being a good Ale house with decent condition Real Ales again. I will Definitely pop in again for visit whenever I'm shopping in Barnet.
One of those old pubs where everything is dark wood, the floor slopes and you crack your head on the doorframe. Nice fire going and decent outside space - I was surprised it wasn't busier on a Sunday lunchtime. Found out why when I had the food - Sunday roast was average and the pudding was dubious. This is definitely a pub for drinking rather than eating - bear that in mind and you should enjoy your visit.
Had a Pint there over the weekend and felt totaly relaxed . An amazing cosy quiet pub where you can just read your paper and enjoy the beer ( also very well stocked ) . This is what a pub should be like .I also purchased a small tin of Snuff from the barman . Well worth a try
We used to like coming here when visiting Underhill. However the selection of beers last Sat were highly uninspiring in comparion to previous visits - it has always been one of the reason we go here instead of elsewhere.
It'll have to be a change of venue next season....
Re-furbished recently and they've (understandably)jumped in early on the smoking ban. Prices up by 50-60p and TVs out. Decent grub too. Part of me approves but with the regular punters off to seek cheaper lager/SkyTV elsewhere the place has lost its atmosphere. And God, it's quiet. Yes, it looks nice, the toilets no longer a toxic zone, but I missed the banter between all walks of life. No longer a classless society, and the poorer for it in my opinion.

The Mitre is dead, long live the olde Mitre.
The new owners have restored this beautiful site to it's former glories. And it's non-smkoking.

A late sunny if chilly Saturday afternoon and evening, yesterday, and a warm welcome to a comfortable and busy pub. OK, the big screens were on for football, but not too intrusive (the sound was at a comfortable level), and even the disappointment when the Magpies lost 1-0 was manageable :-). Excellent Everards Orginal at 2.30, and good Adnams Bitter at 2.15. The service was good and helpful, and as the pub got busier, it didn't lose any of its appeal.
Nice genuine old pub - not a plastic fake 'old' pub. Decent beer and a nice atmosphere too.
Very consistent pub. Always good beer, and the prices haven't moved since I've been visiting. Bar staff could do with cheering up, mind. Food's decent too.
I visited for the first time in probably 30 years on a weekend in Feb. Apparently under a new governor that day, and pretty busy. Service was good and friendly, and a pretty reasonable pint of Tetley Bitter. The Marstons Old Empire was delicious (and essential after a very wintry and bitter afternoon to be walking in) - and that meant staying for a second pint.
Probably the nicest pub in High Barnet. Several visits over the years has given me a good impression of this establishment. No yobs or loud music, beer selection decent inc Tetley Cask for a staggering £1.85 a pint, Adnams Ale and a couple of guests (25/3:one being Everards, nothing special) at £2.10 a pint. Pub seemed to be under staffed on my visit, a sat lunch and evening, though on the whole have no massive complaints here, though the east european barman/waiter/pot-boy tried to swipe my unfinished pint.
good local pub with a friendly crowd and no mouthy yobs. real ales well kept. cheap as well. good staff
This is a nice traditional pub - which though has a no smoking section - it makes no difference. They have started doing cheap food - though not tried it, drinks are averagely priced, but do a good deal on a bottle of wine.
one of a dying breed of good local pubs. good atmosphere with a mixed set of locals and excellent beer every time I've been there. Wish the place could be relocated to edgware where there is nothing anywhere near it.

i heard that the bloke who used to have the Monk is trying to buy it. Anyone heard?
anonymous - 10 Dec 2004 02:27 |
An oasis - no yobs, even on a Friday night. Excellent and well-served real ale. As one reader says, beware the low ceilings! Be careful after closing time - there's loads of tossers from other pubs on the streets, particularly by the bus stops and fast food places. Don't let this deter you from the Mitre tho - it's a really nice boozer.
Owen - 7 Oct 2004 15:17 |
A charming old pub with a good friendly atmosphere and a good selection of real ales. Well worth a visit.
My new local and where you can meet a nice cross section without any aggro. best ales on the High St.

I very nice comfortable pub in which a few nice ales can be drunk. All of the bar staff were very friendly and poured an excellent pint of ale. The food was also good ... a range of burgers and another pub grub at reasonable prices. I very pleasant pub to have a quiet drink in.
Dave - 27 Jan 2004 15:45 |
A quiet high street boozer, with three or four real ales available on handpump.
Quite good when I visited with a mate last night.
The mitre is a good pub for a quiet drink with a couple of friends. Tall people beware, its ceilings are'nt the highest there are!
