Had a meal recently and wow what a meal , new menu and plenty of choice to chose from , belive they have a new chef and they are doing a great job.
Decor can be a bit dated but it kinda lends to the charm of the place being a 16th centry inn , cant complain either regarding the drinks all served with a pleasant smile.

Visited this pub recently for a late lunch after a round of golf. I ordered a pint of Doombar which was not up to the usual standard for this beer but just about drinkable. I also ordered the jumbo cod from the bar menu. The next pint I tried was Spitfire which tasted like vinegar and was sent back, so instead I had Bombadier which again was drinkable but certainly not 100%. The barmaid said she would take the real ales off until they were sampled by the Manager. The pub was not that busy but I had a very long wait for the jumbo cod which when it eventually arrived was a complete disappointment. This was a relatively small piece of frozen battered fish and not the large fresh battered cod I had expected. Whilst waiting for the food I picked up the vinegar bottle and noticed sediment floating in the bottle reminiscent of a lava lamp. This was changed immediately once I pointed out the problem. The Manager then sampled all the real ales and promptly put them all back on! Needless to say I will never be going to this place again.

Can't comment on the food as didn't eat there but the people eating looked happy enough. Nice pint of Doom Bar in the garden with some Spring sunshine. Could do with another ale of tap perhaps but a pleasant experience on my visit.

Seems to still be a food place serving beer rather than a pub but recent visit , service good and polite

What positive comments? I think there is one from 3 years ago.
Has there been a management/staff change?
I have to say it is dreadful service, avoid at all costs.
Which is a shame as it's a lovely old building and setting.

Despite the positive comments about this pub they obviously have not learnt from the negative ones.
Over a 2 hour wait for food, no communication and an extremely rude female who I presume was the manageress.
I complained direct to the pub by email and received a very unprofessional aggressive reply. Says it all really as 'attack is the best form of defence'

Can't understand these comments. We found the staff extremely friendly and the food very good. We have returned to this pub on several occasions with young children and always been served quickly and efficiently by friendly staff. This pub has a great history, a lovely garden and very helpful staff. It has been very busy each time we've been there, but the service has still been good. Looks a very quaint place to stay which we intend to try one day. It has a fantastic outside bar and bbq in the summer as well as restaurant inside. We would recommend this pub to anyone, with or without children.

I am sorry but all these comments are unacceptable. All the staff at the leather bottle pub are firendy and well trained. All the staff are trained to the highest standards of customer satisfaction and care. In one comment it was stated that the bar was closed but the locals were still served. This is highly unlikely and the bar will always close at 11 sharp as all other pubs do with no exeptions. Another stated that they came for a wedding and the food was slow coming out. If you would like to remeber it is a country pub we do not have a large kitchen and with a hole restaurant of guest food will be slower than normal but it is all brought out. In some times there are large waits on food in the bar when the building is full of customers again remeber this is a pub we do not have a large kitchen but all customers are reminded and several signs are put around the pub that the food is not always fast but it is worth the wait. All the staff are trained to deal with customer unsatisfaction if the customer is rude towards memeber of staff them they will not be made welcome as we are people as well not here to be shouted at or spoken down to.
I surgest to anyone who would like to visit the pub please do not be put off by these comments as they were no ware near as bad as they have been made out
all the staff are friendly and will alwayshelp as much as they can and do as much as humanly possible to make your visit plesant.
Ths pub is still runing as good as it has ever been and there are hundreds of people that have enjoyed there visit here and continue to return to we cant be that bad.
If anyone has any worries or questions about any comments on this page please give us a ring ask for a higher memeber of staff and ask us what you are unsure off we would be happy to explain and give you any information you require
thank you for reading this
hopefully see you soon

We went here to celebtrate a friends wedding. The place is lovely but the staff are rude and very unfriendley although the food was good it was very slow in coming out. After the dinner we went through to the bar and went to order drink but were refused but all the "locals" were still be served. I am sure if the leather bottle had better management and staff it would be a great place to go!!

Slow service, rude staff (though not all I might add), mediocre food at expensive prices. When manager was approached to complain, recieved a shouting at in front of the dining room and asked to leave instead of behaving in a reasonable and polite way. If you go to the leather bottle be warned, they will not and cannot deal with criticism which sums up the customer service skills on display here!

If you are looking for acceptabe service or have children, please do not use this establihment. 4/10/2009 we had to wait for 1.5 hours for our food and everybody who came after us was served before us. Sausages for childern and liver and bacon for adults were not cooked properly. We were served only after our third complaint. It was our last visit to this pub.

Best avoided.Service and staff awful. When we questioned the Banoffie Pie (it had no banana in it?) was asked to leave by the manager (Nasty Man)
lampgb - 7 Sep 2009 18:25
The service here was unsatisfactory. The quality of the food was nothing special either.

Most memorable however was the rude and unpleasant manageress.

Best avoided!

This is just info to add to the reasons to visit this pub. Every year, on Christmas Eve, a friend of mine reads "A Christmas Carol" dressed as Ebeneezer Scrooge. I have a recording of him reading, and have had the priviledge of working with him. He's quite talented and his reading will bring a tear to your eye. That is unless you're heart is as hard as a Scrooge yourself.

If your in a hurry for food - don't come here. Waited an hour for food on a sunday afternoon - overheard another person complaining about the wait- the woman behind the bar said - both the restaurant and bar are full and we have only 3 people in the kitchen. The glossy brochure say it fits 80 people - maybe they should employ more staff - I wouldn't like to come here for food in the summer

I concur totally with the previous comments!

A true find, well known in the world of a Charles Dickens fan but should be a top pick for anyone who wants to find a pub that "ticks all the boxes"
They have the best bar staff, chatty friendly but not too overpowering. The food was fantastic! and a bargin. We had only gone for the day but after seeing the accommodation I wish we had booked in for the night! I bet the breakfast would be out of this world too!
