Grove Tavern, Southbourne

user reviews of the Grove Tavern, Southbourne

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Is now a BREWHOUSE AND KITCHEN which brews a substantial range of beers on the premises and does food as well.

Gangsters, druggies, scum, etc., etc. Seems just the pub for Pond Life 'Classic Punk Riding on a New Wave' Well, we all like a bit of church music, don't we?
So, here is your chance to get groovy down at the Grove Tavern with some splendidly innocent and beautiful music by Pond Life at the Grove Tavern on Saturday, 7th February 2015, from 9 p.m.. And then there's a rave up.

Interesting reviews, as this place isn't too bad. Yep, Boscombe and Southbourne have some true scum, but there's no real evidence that there are more in here than anywhere else. At least this place is individual, plays its own music, isn't a chain slave, serves ESTRELLA and has great bar staff!! This place is good and is on the high street and right by the sea- come on! Those who are saying avoid are obviously frightened of their own shadows. This gets a cracking 6 from me- and that is really really unusual. We need more of these places in britain.

"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

An absolute cesspit that self-respecting Southbourne locals avoid. Imagine the really bad pubs in Boscombe, but transplanted into Southbourne. That's it. Having the Grove Tavern around makes sleepy Southbourne far more dangerous and criminogenic.

The Grove Tavern is frequented by old lags, wannabe gangsters, Methadone users, foulmouthed ber-drunks, and the occasional misguided foreign tourists. If you value your safety at all, stay away.

This place has undergone a marked improvement since my last visit. The Ringwood 49er - which was 'only' 2.80 a pint compared with 3.05 for a pint of Ringwood Best in The Royalty - and Wells Bombardier were well kept. The staff were friendly and hard working and most of the more menacing people who used to drink in here seem to have moved on.

A good pint after work, just what is needed!!!

I alwayshave a pint here whenever I'm in Southbourne and I've never once felt like an outsider. I've always found the beer to be good and the atmosphere fine (though admittedly I've never been in on a match night).

No complaints from me at all - a great pub.

Oh and I hope that wino asking for bus fare wasn'nt my dad , as he's a local there lol.

great pub if you keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut and you don't live in Southbourne, on the good side
the beer is OK that's about it.

OK community pub - but the ale is not much cop. I like the landlord as he does not suffer fools or troublemakers gladly. Incidentally, the other day I was standing at the bank machine just next to this pub when a wino staggered out of the pub and tried to scrounge some money of me for his bus fare. When I told him to bugger off, he went back into the pub!!

Ive read a few reports which suggested that this place was a bit rough. A relatively new place (bank conversion I think) but feels like its a lot older. Ive always enjoyed nights out there. Nice garden in the summer and big screen football when the need arises.

was a building society.Should have stayed that way full
of landlords Cronies, and I live in southbourne

I think this pub is a fine place to drink. The landlord doesn't put up with any shit and keeps the real trouble makers out. It is a proper local pub and everyone seems to know each other and this can sometimes make you feel like an outsider.

Not a friendly place

Peter Froude's comments of 5/11/2003 & 10/11/2004 prove to me that I am not a "winner" (whatever that is!) and also apparently I am not "discriminating" either!

But his comments about the Grove Tavern having only one source of competition does puzzle me - the heading of this page shows 4 pubs within a half mile - two of them are cliff-top pubs with sea views too!

Actually its not a bad little place really.

Oh by the way - he said in both his reviews that it had been a bank.In fact it never was to the best of my recollection, it was a Building Society though.

Choice of ale was Fullers London Pride or Brakspears both of which were reasonable well kept on my recent visit. Fairly quiet so didn't encounter the problems that Dave S had to contend with on his visit. Quiz machine is one those old 'Guinness' machines where you have to press buttons rather than the screen when answering the questions. Toilets need to be cleaned more frequently as the stench was unbearable. Can't comment on the food as I didn't try it. Beer garden looked a bit spartan. So all in all a bit of a mixed bag.
johnkn7 - 29 Aug 2005 17:46
The food is inexpensive and quite tasty, served by Eastern Europeans.

There is a horrible large TV Screen with irritating football shown on it.

Overall, the pub is OK.
seasiderMM - 17 Dec 2004 05:29
The Grove Tavern will always remain a bank that has been converted into a pub. There is (IMHO) no possiblity that this place, will ever become an establishment that the "winners" in life will ever want to go to. Anyway! it is now just a drinking den - and the omly other place in the Southbourne Grove is the Malt and Hops. So you now have a choice haven't you?
Peter Froude - [email protected] - 10 Nov 2004 14:19
I think the Grove is an ok place, decent beer, good service and ok regulars.Southbourne does have a lack of pubs and this one is perhaps the best

Manager treats customers like kids. OK if u only like football. Not a pub for the family..Can be a bit rough. Seen a few fights there among drunks.

As far as I'm aware, this pub was taken over by new management not so long ago, has a lovely decked beer garden, and is a brill local pub. Friendly staff and and a clean crisp pint every time. Not bad in my opinion :)Oh and I'm a woman!
lauren - 13 Apr 2004 12:07

c_04 - 29 Mar 2004 11:49
This pub is a friendly pub and the staff are great no riff raff in here
Anne - 6 Mar 2004 16:40
It's a brilliant pub, great atmos and great selection of drinks. IT RULES!!
jonmartin - 11 Jan 2004 21:59
This pub was once a bank, but it was converted into a drinking den. It has no class, and locally it is a place to be avoided for those who have any discrimination.
Peter Froude - 5 Nov 2003 21:05
Not a pub for women.
