We just had our Christmas party at this place. EXCELLENT!! The food, the service, the setting, the lot! 10/10

My wife and I organised a family and friends get together to take place at the Rose and Crown. We had to change the details of our booking a number of times but throughout this process the staff were very accommodating and very helpful. When we arrived we were suprised to see such a busy pub! There was another large party of dinners as well lots of tables in the bar. This gave us concerns that the service would not be up to par. This was definitely not the case. When the food arrived we were even more delighted. My wife and I had the Game Croquettes to start which were fantastic. My Venison was equaly good and my wife claims her Steak & Ale Pie was the best she's had! However the star of the show was the Bread and Butter Pudding, it was out of this world (as agreed by a number of other members of our party enjoying the same choice). Overall 10/10. Will definitely be returning, if only for the Bread and Butter Pudding!

Wonderfully located in a quiet village of Shilton, with stone walls inside and open fire, which I can imagine looks lovely when lit in the winter.
This is nice pub to have a pint or two in with bunch of happy locals.
They have a choice of three real ales, well kept as they tasted great.
However when it came to food, the fact that chef in shabby outfit was hanging behind the bar drinking pint after a pint worried us a bit.
Meals were brought by a loud, struggling with plates waitress wearing flip flops and tank top showing off her armpits, and nearly sweeping our table with her hair.
Portions were generous, food tasty (fish pie and lamb) which comforted us, even if the microwave sound could be heard from the kitchen very often.
Cheesecake, dried out and rubbery put me in bad mood again, however sticky toffee pudding was tip-top.
Overall experience: great pub for drinking, ideal stop over between Carterton and Burford, eating there not recommended as it's too pricey and gratuities are expected as Christmas, not leaving the tips is loudly commented by blond beauty.

We wanted a central venue for friends from London and Gloucestershire to meet and booked sunday lunch without having visited. we needn't have worried; the setting, the ambience and friendliness of the staff made it totally relaxed and enjoyable. We all had Hooky but there were two other bitters on the bar and it's one of those pubs that has managed to modernise without scaring away locals who just want to come in for a pint.
The food was excellent - the chef who I assume was the proprietor came out and chatted to us. The fish pie was especially appreciated. All the charm of a Cotswold pub experience without the crush because its off the beaten track.

Having visited the Rose and Crown at Shilton we found the food excellant and the prices reasonable, however, upon using the toilets, ( I the gents and my wife the ladies ) we got the shock of our lives. Filthy would be a complement, no hot water to wash our hands properly in either toilet and with many varieties of vegitation growing up the walls and in the trough itself. Also, with holes in the wall of the urinal itself providing a haven for all types of bugs, germs and viruses not to mention the creatures that live within, what are the chances of someone going home with some tropical disease? On top of this, the bar staff can often be seen using the ladies toilet, however, and I quote my wife " they do what they have to, straighten their hair then return to serving food and drink without washing their hands" In this day and age with the possibility of developing who knows what I reccommend avoiding this place at all costs.

Shilton is a lovely village inhabited by origianl Shilton families and rich people from London and other places who have bought weekend houses as a investment . The village pub was in the hands of a original Shilton person but has now been taken over by someone from outside . No money has been spent on the decor , they are either having it as a original old country pub setting or they cannot afford to decorate it , or buy new furnture just yet . There is a hole in the dry cotswold stone wall in the restaurant side which looks unsafe to me . Its all very basic and so really should be the prices , but they are London pub prices . Beers are good Hooky beer and young original both good well kept pints but a little expensive for Shilton . Locals cant afford to drink there , its weekenders and raf from Carterton . The food menu is very basic just a piece of paper , and there isnt allot of choice . 4 for a starter , 10 for a main meal meat fish and veg , 5 pounds for cheese and biscuits 4 - 4.50 for a general suite .Wine is around 10 a bottle , Champagne starts at 30 a bottle . We ordered a roast X 3 but at 2 pm on a Sunday they could only manage 2 and my girlfriend had a fish pie . Which was small in a dish with liitle fish in it and side veg which was nice . 10 for fish pie ????? though . We had 2 roast dinners , meat was very nice , pots nice , 2 x veg very nice indeed . credit where due . They serve you though as if they dont really want you there and they are doing you a favour . I left a tip but dont think it was deserved at all . Apparently the chef owner has all the right credentials having started in London , but if he wants to be a success in the country hes got some learning to do i think .

This is a very warm and welcoming pub, with a nice atmosphere, generated from the staff and local punters alike. The food was, not beating around the bush, excellent. All the produce is locally grown, fresh and of high quality, which was reflected in the price. I felt the price slightly high, for a pub, but the portion size was plentiful, and the roast beef was cooked to perfection. One of my guests had the bread and butter pudding and said is was wonderful and light. Don't let the fact that the gents is outside, put you off from visiting, because it proved to be a refreshing break from the warm fire place.
If your looking for a totally English country pub, this is your place. I can't wait to go again!

I visited this country pub yesterday while visiting friends in Oxfordshire and was well impressed. It's small, cosy and friendly (they didn't mind when we walked in with mud-caked boots having reached the pub via several sodden fields). There's a small but wide-ranging variety of beers, spirits and wines, including Young's and - my favourite - the local brew, Old Hookey (and I'm not really a fan of real ale, but ended up having four pints). The food came in plentiful portions and was, in a word, gorgeous. The homemade ciabatta burgers are just that - homemade - and the lamb's liver with bacon and mash in red wine sauce I had was just fantastic. The staff are friendly and efficient - all six meals came at once, even though the pub was fairly busy. I would give this pub a 10 rating but I've docked a point because the gents' loo is outside, which is not what you want on a cold, rainy winter's day, though the loos are clean and graffiti-free. The pub's off the beaten track, but if you're in the Carterton/Burford/Brize Norton area it's definitely worth seeking out this little gem.
