Good solid British style pub. Small but we'll kept beer selection. Nice but expensive food. Friendly and efficient staff. Right by the station so ultra convenient for the train home. Slightly more expensive than the whetherspoons round the corner, but no kids, a great mix of 80s/90s music and not too noisy - apart from Thursday/Friday after work crowds.

Popped in yesterday for a quick beer and a fix of sport on TV. Cricket, then rugby on the main screen and TV in the smaller back room.
3.60 for a decent pint of Olde Trip - one of two ales on tap. Not as good a selection as the White Hart opposite, but they didn't have the TVs on.
Being part of a hotel, the toilets were some of the poshest I have ever encountered in a pub.
Probably not a place to stay for a session, but serves a purpose.

This is a great bar situated within the hotel itself but open to the public. I only go there to watch sports as it has a fantastic big screen and shows most cricket matches unlike nearly all other pubs in London which are obsessed with football. I agree with drunkmarv that it's not a place to spend the whole evening but it is ideal for watching sports in an upmarket bar with prices that are roughly the same as regular pubs in the area. It can get a bit crowded but no more so than any bar when big sporting events are on. Overall, a good find for the cricket fan!

Consensus seems to suggest that it ain't as bad as the Hamilton Hall. Well, that is very true, but think on... Would you rather spend your hard earned on two pints in a fetid wetherspoons beer canteen with the down and outs, or would you rather have one pint in a gutted out, stripped down and ponced up bar with the loud and preening Cityrati.

... or do you just move on to somewhere better?

Been in here a couple of times, mainly to watch the football. Not the largest pub in the world and it's almost impossible to navigate when it's full but it's decent enough.

Not too bad - better than I remember and a decent pint. Not much crumpet though which isn't great.

Bitter never that good but I keep going back: it's a good enough place to drink as the hoi polloi never really dare to venture in. Music is classic English: 60's/BritPop etc. Not noticed the trance in there myself.

Busy, noisy, can't remember what the prices were like... but incredible toilets and its not the Hamilton Hall.. Not a place to spend an evening though.

this is one of my favourite's in the smoke along with the pub behind the rcj - the beer in fine and toilets are great, good trance music and it gets really busy on a friday night.

Very smoky and very busy on a Friday night.

My first visit for a month or so and something has changed here. Horrible eurotrance-like music on that noone can either dance to or ignore. Really was offputting....
Beer still fine though.

Not bad, not bad. Somehow doesn't quite live up to its potential though - the building, inside and out, is splendid, and whilst loth to comment on the WCs I have to comment on the WCs, which are luxuriously smart. It's hard to get overly-excited about the place, until you suddenly remember that you are almost within touching distance of Hamilton Hall (Wetherspoons) and you are very clever and sensible and well informed not to be in there but to be in The George instead. Have been a couple of times and witnessed a real contrast in clientele: first time it seemed to be entirely populated by wealthy noisy sloanes enjoying some kind of school reunion, whereas the second time was notable for a couple of angry lesbian Boro fans.

I like this place, decent beer and decent food. Not too smoky and the high ceiling helps with the air.
The bar area can get crowded with people standing around drinking, but if you sharpen your elbows and ask politely, people will move with no hassle.
Bar staff do well in balancing the Conran corporate rubbish (change put on a small metal plate etc) with the fact they work in a boozer that is usually full of blokes having a quick beer before heading home.

Clean and tidy, good wines and great toilets, decent beer.

I can't quite put my finger on why I like this place, but I do.

Its sort of like a strange synthesis between old fashioned boozer and modern bar. Lots of wood. Plus I like the name.

Not overly banged out with people when lots of other places in this neck of the woods might be, you can hear yourself talk in here.

Not the sort of place you would go to get majorly on it, more of a pleasant stop off whie getting sharpened up for later on.

Bobmadier very well kept on Tuesday - most enjoyable. Pub surprisingly busy given it was only one in area not showing the footy.

I like drinking in here as it's always nice to have a bit of carpet underfoot when en route to the well-looked-after khazi.
PieFace - 29 Sep 2004 14:40
One of the better pubs in the Livepool St area with a selection of 4 real ales (although 2 are Ridleys).

But note to manager: please re-locate your screen when showing the footy to a higher area cos it's hard to see, especially when a grinning eejit with a massive head decides right in front of it is the best place to chat to his mate.

Dunno about the Guiness. The George is OK, often quiet when other pubs are almost antisocially busy. Pleasantly traditional decor. SMall room at the back is good for private parties. Not exactly an ace pick-up joint, and the food selection is expensive and poor.

I really liked the George. Is a friendly pub with great food. The staff are very friendly, especially the guy from brisbane who served us! Will def be visiting again!

Here here - I agree wholeheartedly, theres no comparison to good Guinness and good service thats for sure.

Dear Distinguished reviewer. While I can neither disagree nor refute your not unreasobale claim of mistreatment at the hands of staff at The George I must point out one salient fact. This is England. At no stage have I had a pint of Guinness that was half as creamy and smooth as the worst pint of Guinness I have tasted "Sa 'bhaile". Perhaps, upon reflection, it is a question of standards.
brian - 19 Nov 2002 10:15
Dear sir, Guinness training a side, even though the staff may not be Irish, I do believe in old fashioned courtesy. After the 1st pint was pulled, I subtley asked the staff member to pour out a portion of the pint. Afew months ago the previous staff would have done this simple request without any problem, and on occasion enjoyed a joke about it. I was however treated to my change being rudely place in the tray and some snide remarks to her colleague about this request. Is this unreasonable?
Matt - 19 Nov 2002 10:06
In response to the users comments. I agree theat the staff don't know how to pour a pint of guinness. However, have you ever maybe stopped to think that it might be advantageous to simply point out thier innicent mistake? It is in all likelihood possible that these people are not Irish (which I assume you are). I happen to know the manager of the George and I have no doubt in my mind he would be appreciative of his staff receiving some well placed and subtle advice.
brian - 19 Nov 2002 09:35
Six months ago, I would have been recommending the George as a great little pub, which is part of the luxurious Great Eastern hotel. However, since recent staff changes, if you are looking for a good pint of Guinness, do Not come here. The Guinness is poured "straight" upto about 3cms from the top of the glass and then topped up again straight after about 10 seconds. Any Guinness drinker, knows how to pull a pint of Guinness and the obligatory minute's wait. Its tradition for petes sake. The result is a very poor pint. Can anyone suggest where do they get their staff from? and who trains them? Cos its driving customers away
