user reviews of the George and Dragon, West Haddlesey

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited on a quiet night but still enough people there to give it a friendly vibe. Real ale excellent: two regulars and one guest beer.

Note that it is not open luchtimes during the week.

I'm so pleased to hear the heartening comments about this pub, and look forward to my holiday in December up there to savour the changes. Souds as though ut's under new management.

I stumbled upon this watering hole in February this year whilst looking for a place to drink when I move from London to Yorkshire, I took a wrong turning and found this place. I have stopped here about 6times now and hope to move into my new home in a couple of weeks time. And guess what , I will have TWO new homes, 'cos the beer is good (for me) and the food is very good for both of us. Having read some previous comments either there are two pubs with the same name in the area or perhaps the writer went to Mac's and thought they had gone to the ritz for cucumber sandwiches. We ordered and got good homemade food (too much for me). But I did not see "sour grapes" on the menu!! So they must have the wrong pub. WATCH OUT BRUNO

I used to use this site a lot when my husband's band was playing, to get an idea of what the pubs were like or where they were. I've recently started looking again and decided to check out this pub as it has become our new local since moving to Brayton 8 months ago. Being in West Haddlesey it isn't the nearest pub to us at all but it is always out first choice. I can't believe previous negative reviews about it as I have been going there to eat for several months now. As new people to the atea I have found all the staff, especially the landlord and landlady both friendly, cheerful and very efficient. My husband loves his beer and has recently become a member of CAMRA and we have seen this pub mentioned in their literature, with glowing reviews. My husband loves the beer and can recognise when a landlord keeps a good cellar - he works in a brewery and is a qualified beer taster so I think he knows what he's talking about!

As for the food - well we have been on our own and have also taken several different groups of friends there to eat over the months. On every occasion we have been well satisfied - and completely stuffed. Contrary to some reviews the food is not frozen, it is fresh, cooked with care and served in plentiful portions. The sunday lunch is the best sunday lunch I have had in a long time. The meat melts in your mouth, the veg are served separately and you struggle to get it all on your plate. They also don't skimp on the gravy, which is rich and tasty. As for the desserts - don't get me started. They are HUGE and delicious. On our first visit there I had joked that I was the one who would always go for the puddings. When we went the next time a member of staff took our order for desserts and I ordered raspberry pavlova. This dessert turned up that was so big, even I took time to get through it. When the landlady came out to see if everything was ok she asked who'd ordered the pavlova and I said it was me. She said she thought it was for me cos she knew I loved puddings. I think it shows true passion for your pub and customers when you can remember what someone said after only meeting them once. I have been to other pubs in the area and found them ok but given a choice of pubs, eventhough I'm not a beer drinker, I will always go for this one.

I feel compelled to comment on this site mainly due to the quite obviously mischievous and unfounded reviews which have been posted. I have lived in this village for two years and I use this pub EVERY day. By any measure, I am better qualified to comment than either those who have been excluded for more than three years or the one-off trippers expecting some Yokel themed country pub. The pub is busy more nights than most others I have been in around here, with people coming and going all day from opening time to early next morning, using this pub as it is meant to be used. The beer is always exceptional and has numerous CAMRA awards recognising this, there are regular trips off and charity events, recently raising a considerable sum for a children's hospice and of course the legendary beer festivals. There can be few events which generate a continuous stream of customers trudging past my window on the mile hike from the nearest bus stop! Thankfully, I understand the Landlord intends to remain for the next 18 years - long may it continue!

This is great friendly pub, which has a wide selection of real ales. The food is high quality and nothing is too much trouble if wanting changes to the menu items. The landlord and landlady are very friendly as are the bar staff.

This is a quality pub that is centre of village life hosting all manner of nights from quiz , karaoke and recently a spiritualist evening!

A great pub - ignore the reviews - just go go go !

I was recomended this country pub by some friends who have been a number of times, we were made to feel welcome by the land lord, we were impressed by the selection of real ales and drinks selection. we had a lovely meal which was home cooked and fresh, the waiting staff was very polite and helpfull, i would recomend this pub to any of my freinds and family, they will not be disapointed with the quality and selection which this pub offers

I have been to this pub a number of times now, and recommend it to my family and friends, the atmosphere is very good and the landlord and his wife make you feel very welcome. I have to say I am a little confused that people are saying the food is frozen as it's lovely! And I have had things made for me that are not on the menu and all has been lovely and fresh! Service Is quick and pleasant, ale is good, food is great cracking village pub!
TetleysJon - 3 Oct 2011 21:12
I've got to say I totally disagree with the comment below. I visited this pub not so long ago and felt very welcome into the pub atmosphere. The bar staff were very friendly and welcoming. We then decided we were going to eat and the food was incredible. Traditional pub food and to an amazing standard. I will defiantly be visiting again.

Well chaps, been in again, not good is it? I was encouraged by the recent posts, and decided to try the place again, but dear me, it just gets worse!

Even mine hosts are getting the message, apparently they drink in The Sloop! Not as dumb as they look!!

I recently visited this pub whilst staying with relatives nearby. The pub was holding a beer festival as it was St George's day. I thought it was a cracking local pub - bags of atmosphere and clearly really popular as it was busy all day with locals and visitors alike. The choice of beers was excellent, and I was impressed by the warm welcome from the landlord. The pub obviously plays a big part in the life of the village, holding various quiz nights, music nights etc which is fantastic to see especially as so many other pubs are closing or failing to offer much to the local community. I'll definitely be visiting again next time we come to the area.

My experience of this pub is not so negative as others. The six or seven visits I've made have been ok. The ale is kept well and there is always a choice, although their house pint is well worth sampling. Yes it's small and yes, it's frequented by regulars who dominate interaction with the bar staff - I'd also agree that the food offering is nothing special, but generally it's a pleasant enough place to spend an hour or two.

We visited the george and dragon recently, for the first time in about 3 years, having had a disappointing first visit a few years ago (see my other review) We ended up here by accident having been unable to get food due to overbooking at another local pub. there was plenty of room for us to be seated and the waiter/helper was very pleasant, i get the feeling that this is not really the food pub of the area having been turned away from somewhere that was completely full to find ourselves only a mile or so away where only one other group of four were eating at sunday lunch time, there was plenty on offer but it would appear the food is mainly cooked from frozen, bought in, and pre-prepared, it was certainly edible and this kind of ethos definitely works for the chain pubs of this world, but nothing to write home about, the starter options were also very unusual for standard british fare. the bar area was boisterous with drinkers and the bar seems well stocked with ale, although not any i was particularly familiar with, i had a pint of the house special ale, which is apparently only available in one other pub in the world... it was ok but very lively, which probably explains its limited success :) i would hate to say anything negative about the george and dragon, it is clean and tidy, the staff were polite and the weather was lovely, not sure how much control they have over that.. if you are into the local ales of the area it seems to be the place to be, they sell a similar but more limited selection the wheatsheaf in burn. If its food you need then you would probably be better of searching elsewhere for something more authentic
thetwococks - 17 Apr 2010 00:47
It is clear that the last two posts have either been written by someone who has never visited this pub, or by the owners.

I concur with previous correspondants who believe that this place is nothing more than a nursery serving warm beer out of a pre-fabricated garage to people who like to pay someone to microwave packaged frozen food at a premium price.

Pub was the centre of the community. Now locals not welcomed there. Difficult to understand the business model.
BobbyTupper - 25 Mar 2010 11:39
Some of the posts about this pub i feel are very harsh and out of order, the pub is very friendly and welcoming has good entertainment on a regular basis that caters for everyone...... jazz, quiz, karaoke nights beer festivals, which are all very well supported, the food is great traditional pub food (what more can you ask for from a village pub!!) if you want Sauted Fillet of Gilt Head Bream Crushed cauliflower, white beans, grain mustard butter sauce i suggest you get your self to top restaurants in Leeds/Manchester etc, the drinks are not expensive as some village pubs are... i can honestly say i don't have a bad word to say about this pub and for those who do ....... well obvioulsy the type of people that are never satisfied unless the focus and attention is on them ...... PATHETIC!!!
Flashylady13 - 12 Mar 2010 12:31
I think the last posts are very harsh. I happened upon this pub purely by chance on our way to the M62 (visiting friends in Hillam) and found it very welcoming. Perhaps you lot don't know how to engage a barman in conversation. The landlord certainly knew his stuff, the locals were friendly and were local....
My wife and 2 kids found the place very friendly and 2 of the local lads played pool with my eldest. The food was good wholesome pub grub, the chips and pies were tasty and there was enough to feed us all several times over. The landlords wife (I think) came and chatted to us when we had eaten and also made us feel welcome. We will be visiting again very soon.

awful pub, honestly if you have driven here keep driving at least to the jug, visited both in last week as stopping with family and found this pub to be the worst, having seen previous reviews it seems to be slipping down and down,

passable food, but if you want passable food and a coke go to wetherspoons.
no atmosphere, bar staff, well i got a better conversation for the tv, which was an eye saw it didnnt matter where you look you cant miss it.
tried to play pool. but the room is too small and every shot has to be played with a verticle cue. owners or what i think was the landlord and his wife talk to their young family members who sit in the corner and their friends that it

spoke to one couple who said no locals go to this pub, landlord is keane on barring people he doesnt like, which would appear to be most of the villagers
if you want a good drinking pub try wheatsheaf in burn, if you want a good meal head to the jug, 1 mile up the road, honest you will be glad you did

imusingadellkeyboard - 28 Jan 2010 02:01
i used to go to this pub, anyone who hasnt yet been i suggest you either stay at home or keep driving untill you find anywhere else.

The pub - well its a nice pub. nice car park in a nice area. not very large but enough for the village its in

The Drink - the bar man does know his ale. but he doesnt like to provide for the other drinkers in the world. his main choice being hand pulled real ale. nice but not always for everyone

The Food - well this is were i get confused. they have a in house menu and a frozen menu to buy and eat at home. both are similar which only suggests to me that the food you get in the pub is the same meal cooked from frozen that you could have taken home and had for 3
however the food i had when in the pub was passable, but i was hungry. reports i have heard from other local people who choose to drink further afield say they had much worse and some scary stories too.

The service - is poor, not very talkative barman, who is the landlords son. can get interested sometimes but most times is rather quiet. as for the landlord he seems to like his friends and thats about it, usual helloe goodbyes are about managable but this man likes to laugh with the people he knows

Atmosphere - the pubs only small but the owners decided to put a rather huge tv up inside which i cant seem to fathom out why, but then another large one on the other side to make sure you see it. lots of swearing and usual pub comotion, not really a family place. i hear from others in the village not many people from the village drink there and get transport elsewere. seems a shame but they says they used to go but dont like the place. as the previous post says it does feel like you walked in on someone elses house party.

if you want a enjoyable meal / drink head to the jug inn, its on the other side of haddlesey, alot cleaner, nicer and family friendly.

called to have a pint in the pub the other day ,but unfortunately it was lunchtime and it was shut,i am from rochdale in lancashire ,my grandfather walter gillian used to own the pub about 50 plus years ago,my mother violet worked behind the bar there ,would anyone remember the pub from around that time,? i will hopefully be calling back there in a few weeks,it looks very nice from the outside
ausdog1234 - 18 Jan 2009 20:51
This landlord knows how to keep his beer. Food a bit cheap and cheerful, decent sized car park for a village pub. All in all, it's not bad, although probably not worthy of the essay below. I have relatives in the area and as i understand it very few villagers patronise this place, which is a shame really.

I'd read a couple of reviews of this pub and visited it during a recent beer festival they had there. It was hard to say what the pub was like really during the festival, the festival was excellent though and so I decided to bring my wife with me for another visit. I was told by a friend that The Jug in neighbouring CHapel Haddlesy was a better pub to visit, however, when I last went there, they only had towny chain pub beers (smooth/lager) and absolutely no cask ales, also I found the atmosphere rather sterile.

The George And Dragon had 3 cask ales on and a wide selection of other beers, having chatted with the landlord (a lancashire bloke, but I'll not hold that against him!) I learnt they had different beers more or less every week, mostly from local brewerys like the Brown Cow. I really enjoyed the pub, the atmosphere was excellent, the locals very friendly and the food and service second to none. Apparently it changed ownership a couple of months back and the new landlord and landlady are doing a cracking job at restoring the pub back as a hub of community life. I would thoroughly recommend the George And Dragon to anyone who likes good food and quality real ales. One other thing, they've got the biggest bit of decking I've ever seen outside now and it's a lovely place to sit, eat and drink.. Top Marks...

this pub feels like you have gate crashed someone else's house. poor service i felt as though i was draggint the barman away from his friends, lots of swearing and crude language in use (this is a pub i suppose). Well kept and served but poor quality local ale. This pub has really gone down hill since my last visit a couple of years ago, more Working men's club than village pub.. for a more authentic village pub experience try the wheatsheaf in burn excellent ales and a great ambience.
