Ticking off a few Good Beer Guide Pubs in Plymouth.

Not much to make this one stand out, with the exception of a the easily worn title of oldest pub in Plymouth.

Beer was OK - a couple of St Austell on and the HSD was in fine condition.

Worth it for the stories which you can read from their website.

I had high hopes for this pub with it being in the Good beer and it being the oldest pub in Plymouth, but the place just felt rough as hell!

The interior is a pleasant olde worlde beamed place but the atmosphere felt quite horrible.

Been to many boozers in Plymouth and this one felt intimidating.
Maybe I was just unlucky.

A few ales on a couple of real rough ciders too.

4/10

a must see pub because reputedly it's the oldest in Plymouth, so visited mid week lunchtime - full of surly drunks which spoilt the place despite barmaids best efforts. Old and frankly grotty, ale fair though. Needs a clean up but sensitively as it is still a boozer above all else and the area doesn't need another bistro pub.

We always try to visit this charming old pub.And I meen olde(16thC)
Several tidy ales and ciders all expertly served.
As others have commented its very small, cosy and friendly. You do get the occasional drunk but the staff know the score and deal with them.
The ceiling has recently had a controversial repaint so now has space for more wittisisms (proceeds to RNLI) So if you're a fan of real ale and REAL pubs its legendary and unmissable !

Hmm, sweary argumentative drunks at the bar mid-evening on a Monday - doesn't give a very good impression.

Super little pub with mainly local trade as it's just that little bit away from the main Barbican area. My pint of Trubute was fine but it is a shame that they cannot offer beers from some of the local micro-brewers(no doubt this is due to their beer tie). Very, very friendly and one of the locals even bought us all a beer!! (Never found out why - secret lottery winner perhaps??). It is small and it is "cosy" and the beams take some reading. A good pint of beer, friendly chat and a corned beef and pickle roll - what more do you need!! I felt that the prices were a bit high but the ambiance and atmosphere made up for this. Recommended.

Visited this afternoon (my last attempt to procure a pint having been thwarted by arriving after time had been called...) It is definitely a small pub! It's also quite busy. Not normally a pleasant combination, but the people and the beer made it a positive rather than a negative. A good pint of Doom Bar and some wondering at the beautiful beams made for a good afternoon of procrastination.

A nook of a pub with exposed beams and wobbly tables, this is a convivial hostelry indeed. I was unlucky on my visit to witness the preparations for what promised to be a sub-Phoenix Nights crooning session and after shivering by the open door to wait for the man's van to be unloaded, decided to beat a hasty retreat. Don't let this put you off.

Visited once and never again. Had a Doombar that I knew was going. Brought it back and asked was it on the way out. No "its a fresh barrel and no-one else is complaining" was the surly barwomans response. Went and sat down. 5 mins later barwoman disappears out back and guess what? Clink clank and barrel being changed and fresh Doombar being pulled through. Went and asked again for a replacement and was told no. Bye bye. But its in the beer guide so it's a good pub.......

I used to go in here in my early 20's to throw 1 into the creaky jukebox and listen The Triffids and The Fall - all on lovely 7". I will be back there during the summer to check out the jukebox again. Oh and the beer is also very good and well kept - The Sharps rocked.
best time to visit is between 6.30 and 8.30 - after that it's difficult to get to the very tiny bar...

As one of the half cut locals team who makes a guitar appear from nowhere (well, its case, actually) I can confirm all the good comments made below as uncannily accurate. Especially friendly staff and locals and unique old charm. Bass is now replaced by Tribune but the Doom, Hobgoblin and Abbot are still going strong. This is a real gem of a place which oozes character. Not only the oldest in Plymouth but the best too in my opinion. A must first stop to any visitor - you will probably not bother to go on to anywhere else...

As stated below, apparently the oldest licenced pub in plymouth. This pub is an absolute must for anyone who visits Plymouth city Centre and wants to see what "Olde" Plymouth used to be like! it is like stepping back in time, See the pictures on the walls from times gone by, sip a pint of Hobgoblin or Abbot and listen to the jukebox playing smoke on the water! it's a great place, most of the times i've been in here the locals are usually half cut and playing instruments that seem to appear from no where! makes for a fun afternoon! The "min" as some people like to call it is situated on looe Street near the Barbican Theatre, very near the bus station. Bar staff are always friendly and this pub is a true gem!

Now I'm a little biased, since I work there, but I've also been a regular there for about ten months so I think I've got a reasonable handle.

We're the oldest pub in plymouth and serve four real ales - Hobgoblin, Abbott, Doom Bar and Bass, as well as a couple of ciders and the usual lager/bitter selection. Live music thursday through sunday, and when that isnt around the jukebox has a great selection of older music from electrofunk to rock to motown. Personally I find this great since most modern rock music just doesnt do it for me, and since the music comes on randomly through the day its always good to have your foot tapping on the floor to music than out of boredom!

Great relaxed drinking atmosphere, friendly staff (gotta plug myself somewhere, eh?) who can apprecaite good jokes and magic tricks should you be so inclined to show us.

Admittedly we dont do food apart from a limited range of sandwiches from 1230-1430, but otherwise a solid component of a night out.

Good ales, and lovely snug at the back.

Very old school pub, bordering on the ancient - but that's the charm of this place. Rumour has it Sir Francis Drake used to drink here, who knows if it's true, but it can't have changed much in the last 500 years! Decent range of ale, and the regulars are always half cut in a friendly, matey sort way. Not one to take a date, but if you want to do some serious drinking away from the chavvy Barbican with its simmering undercurrent of violence, this is a cool place to be.

Oldest pub in Plymouth, slightly difficult to find, hidden away in a side street between The Barbican and the shopping centre area. Friendly and welcoming locals. Traditional decor. Highly recommended and well worth seeking out. ( I cant believe this pub isn't on this website already !)
