More restaurant than pub. Went in on a Sunday lunchtime to find that the carvery was the only option for food which was a bit disappointing for some of us. Having said that, the roast was very good and reasonably priced. Four real ales on, I tried the Tonbridge Rustic ale which was OK, not great. For some reason I can't explain, I really didn't find this place very inviting.

Visited this pub today for lunch with a friend. I had a pint of Broadside which was spot on. There is a good and varied menu with a slightly cheaper Specials Board.

The meal was well presented and good value for money. The barmaid (can you still call them that?) waited on table and was very attentive. The pub was very neat an tidy and my friend said the ladies toilet was spotless.

All in all, a very good experience. Will certainly call in again if passing.

oh dear what has happened maybe it was a one off this time.i found the service very slow and not once during our meal was we asked if we would like anymore drinks .i ended up going to the bar myself throughout the meal.hope this was a one off as we have been there several times and service was never this bad.

I don't know what to make of this pub. I've been in several times now since it re-opened, and have come away with a different impression every time. The beer's always excellent - the landlord knows his stuff and is genuinely interested. The service has on occasions been very slow; the pub has sometimes felt very cliquey. The food is said to be good, and I believe these reports, though I haven't eaten there. They've made a very good shot at retaining a pub atmosphere, and not letting the food side take over. A lot of thought's gone into the decor, but I don't like it.
Altogether a mixed impression; I'll keep going back, and see what emerges.

My wife and I called in during the early afternoon. Excellent pint of Pale. The food, it was quiche and real chips was excellent as was the attentive service and surroundings. Secluded garden at the back with a dedicated play area for under 6s. Very very nice place and more of a gastro pub than a traditional local.

Went in for early evening meal last week and very happy to report every thing was great. the place has a had a major make over without loosing the character and has also been tastefully extended.
The food was fabulous and the real ale superb. Only one thing ... don't forget to book as they are always full.

Must say i agree with mysteriousJ!! i have now been to the north pole 3 or 4 times to have dinner and enjoyed it everytime.

i live in canterbury but the journey is well worth it. food has been fantastic and the landlady is a right laugh. All the girls work very hard to make sure you have a relaxing evening!

Sparkle12 i recomend that you give the North Pole another shot and order the pork belly with brie......you wont be disapointed!!!

thanks to everyone at the north pole for several wonderful nights!

I reckon sparkle12 must have gone on a bad night or at least one of the early nights before it settled down. We've bin a few times now - food's always been really good, service is great (just takes time to know how many staff you need for each day I suppose). Always seems to be a good amount of customers in, which gives it atmosphere. We'll be going back!

Found the food here very disappointing, especially as the chef is supposed to have been trained by Gary Rhodes. The presentation was poor and some of the food was undercooked. Also not enough staff on and serivce was slow. Had to wait at least 5 mins to be served at the bar, although the pub at the time was pretty empty. Know theyhave only just opened, but wont be going back.

Finally after a lot of hard work, the renovation and extension are complete ! Opening night is 7pm Saturday 2nd October(this year!). I shall be popping in to sample the fayre - purely to report back to this site and not for personal pleasure you understand! If the food and beer are as good as their last places, it will be definately worth giving a try. They are also doing a carvery on Sundays - experience tells me you wont find better for the price. I reckon this place could be a real asset to the area. Dont take my word for it, visit Lee and Zoe, report back to this site and give it a rating.

Opening is end of June not May - this keyboard is still learning to type !

Planning permission was granted for restaurant extension and work is nearly complete. They hope to open in 5 - 6 weeks(end of May). Rumour has it, they have employed a Gary Rhodes trained chef, so the menu should make for interesting reading!

Has been bought within the last week. New owners have had places on Sth coast - always top notch. Pub being given total refurb, they are also hoping to put extension on rear for new dining room, kitchens etc. Should be open early in new year, watch this space! If their past places are anything to go by the beer and food will be excellent - Sunday carverys are a must!

Closed and on the market. I'm not optimistic about its prospects.

Sadly since the last posting this pub has changed hands again but this time for the worst!!!!
The previous owners made a great job of this 'out of the way pub' great food and even better range of cask ales but sadly this has now all changed

This pub went through several changes of landlord during the last few years, during which time it was generally pretty dire. Things seem to have settled down under the present management, and this is again a decent little boozer. Good range of cask beers, in reasonable nick, good value food, and a quiet but lively atmosphere. Worth dropping in if you're passing.
