I visited on a Saturday lunchtime and was somewhat surprised by the lack of patrons. Tho real ales on - I had Arkell's 3B's. The other beer was a bitter from the West Berkshire brewery. I didn't have any food but a pair of polo players (I kid you not) sat near me and did and it looked jolly nice. The place seemed strangely devoid of atmosphere.

This pub is in a really good location, and looks nice from the outside.
The inside is cosy, however they have a VERY modern extension at the back which doesnt really fit in with the rest of the pub.

The staff are ok, not the best, but then the times ive been there its been very quiet so maybe they are just bored!

Food and drink prices are resonable and the selection is very good.

The food is always really good, ive never had any complaints, very good quality so i wonder why its always quiet??

I normally always have the pie, huge portion size, yummy veg and perfect mash!

would recommened for food quality but not if you want any atmosphere!

Went here last Sat. Superb service and food was amazing.
Great overall experience.

The one time we visited, for lunch on a Saturday, the main part of the pub was practically empty, there was a party (might have been a wedding or anniversary) going on in the back.

Carpet was a mess - large burns, a bit sticky in places. The food (simple sandwiches with salad & fries) was very uninspiring. I won't be hurrying back...

Visited this pub for the first time in a while and it is now under new ownership and has a new menu and decor.
The staff were really friendly and the food was the best that I have had in quite a while. You can either have their a la carte menu or they offer a choice of bar snacks.
Highly recommended.

Took the family here but was a little disappointed. We had a Sunday roast lunch which I am sure was re-heated and disappointing. For what we had it was overpriced.

Friendly country pub on the side of the main from Reading to Newbury. Appears to have a set of regulars that the staff know well, but the staff treated this traveler with equally excellent service. Nicely set-up bar with a separate dining area. Also some outdoor seating by the car park. Only one real ale on tap the night I was there (Arkells 3B) but a second hand pump is on the bar. Dining menu looks interesting--I plan to try the dining room the next time I visit. Worth a break if heading to the West.
