user reviews of the Sun Tavern, Covent Garden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

What was probably a traditional Covent Garden boozer has been "tarted-up" and opened out. Single room on the ground floor now in the ubiquitous pastel colouring with what looks like Laura Ashley funishings. I had a slight problem with the beer as the barmaid poured some of the beer from an old glass into mine!! I complained and she poured a brand new beer for me without any hassle. Thwaites Wainwright golden ale was the beer and it was fine but again very expensive - but I suppose all pubs charge high prices in this part of town.

Think this place has been refurbed recently. Not bad but not worth going out of your way for. It's got a more modern feel than I remember but perfectly passable.

visited her yesterday at 12 midday, had a couple of pints of Fosters... first pint out of the day I guess but it tasted fine. Had the cheese burger and chips... a bit steep at £7 but good portions and tasted great. Nice staff and atmosphere, 2 big tvs with the news on one and Sky sports on the other... I'll be back.

Lease for sale on the Fluerets website. Hopefully the next owner can save this once great pub.

Look pal, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck - it's a duck. The regulars have gone, business is bad, and it's grubby. End of.

I visited this place last Friday and was distinctly unimpressed.
The beer (London Pride) was poor so I switched to the lager which was flat. I last visited here in the summer and I remember the beer being very good indeed.
Also the music was so loud my friends and I had to shout to each other to be heard, although perhaps that's because we're getting old....

I presume the 2 guys below have told Mark this to his face?
soothpark - 10 Jan 2010 14:03
Nick was great. Ken was great. Jo was great. Mark, however, is a total knob. The place took such a massive downturn a few years ago when he took over. All the old regulars stay away now; it seems he's staying in the job due to past glories and good mates. This once beautiful pub is now filthy, and poorly managed in EVERY way - from staff to beer lines, cleaning to H&S.

To the owners - please, please save this great pub from it's shockingly bad manager.

zatknight - 31 Dec 2009 11:57
Is Mark still managing there? That guy is complete waste of time when you talking to him, he does not care about anything, his only friends are Chris are John and nobody else. Mark if you are reading this, you must know that you are complete worse manager ever. I'm manager myself now, Cheers Mate. Dagnis P.S Your lovely ex employee..

I quite liked the Sun - a long narrow dark wood room with plenty of chairs and tables along one wall. There were only a small number of customers when I went in although it was reasonably late in the evening (around 10pm). Somewhat surprising since it seemed at least as good as most other pubs in the immediate vicinity.

Beer range was ok and I'd return here if in the area

Visited on a Monday night to watch the football and must say that I enjoyed the place. Very cosy pub with attentive & pleasant bar staff. Beer seemed well kept so will definitely venture in again....

I agree with whippit. I popped in the latter half of last week on a quiet afternoon, enjoyed a very good pint of pride & deuchars while chatting to the landlord. He seems a very knowledgeable guy, yes he has a strong personality but at least he has one there are too many drones running pubs nower days. The decor was very clean & tidy, the music was pleasent and the food looked good value for the area.

Looking forward to popping back.

How the mighty fall.
I was here a couple of weeks ago and was appalled.
This used to be a real locals pub - also frequented by staff from the Royal Opera House. It had great atmosphere and supremely well kept beer.

What has happened?
The beer was flat and the staff disinterested - bordering on the rude.

Pubs are closing at a steady rate at the moment and ones like this deserve to join their number.
What a shame, another bolloxed pub.

This pub used to be a well run decent pub
It is now dirty smelly and has no atmosphere at all
It needs a good scrub and an overhall of management and staff. The alley that runs beside it smells of stale beer and is overlooked when cleaning takes place (if at all ).
The food is as bad as can be expected I ordered garlic bread which was saturated in grease and cooked in the microwave.
The only people who actaully seem to work here are the actual barstaff
Management dont seem to know how to manage anything at all
All in all dont bother going here

Run-of-the-mill Covent Garden pub, with a choice of three real ales. Had a perfectly respectable pint, but found the manager's fidgety manner rather disconcerting.

I read some mixed reviews here, however I cannot complain, had a great pint of deuchars IPA here, good prompt service, and the landlord could not have been more accomodating, he's frank but really quite a funny guy, I will certainly be paying another visit when in town, and the xmas decorations are quite funky too!

Great little pub, popped back last week and had a great curry & glass of wine, this will be one that our office will visit from time to time. Nice to meet the new manager & a few more new faces behind the bar, far friendlier than the old landlord Joe, she always came across as though she was doing you a favour when she served you. The bar staff have always been friendly there though.

Would definitely recommend a visit if in the area.

Manager is realy bad and rude even he has many years experience running pubs.Went there few days ago. As I know that bar staff is realy good.Good food as well.
royaloperahouse - 30 Jul 2008 01:37
The manager is a miserable, rude so-and-so. This place really hasgone downhill since he took over.

And the place needs a good bloody clean, too.

Went on a 7 pub crawl. Would have forgotten this one if someone hadn't written it down. Just plain ordinary and thats it....

Atmosphere: A good atmosphere with a real mixture of people; suits, theatre goers, shoppers and shop workers. Just enough out of the way from the main Covent Garden drag so that it's not too busy. A couple of large TV's show live sport. All in all a good pub with a nice feel.

Beers: This is where the pub really let itself down!! In theory there were 3 real ales, London Pride, Adnams and Old Speckled Hen. In practice there was 1 at most...........and then that ran out!! The manager /landlord didn't seem concerned as most of the clientelle seemed to be drinking lager (of which there were several to choose from).

Food: I don't think they serve food in the evening.

This is part of the small "Market Taverns" group of pubs which usually have a wide choice of excellent real ales, therefore I was disappointed that there weren't more here. The pub itself is good and a good venue for watching sport on TV, shame about the lack of decent beer. Maybe we were just unlucky.
spacehopper - 16 Dec 2007 13:51
Nice place, good pint and had the football on (with out sound which I prefer) although the bar man was unable to tune the other tv in for the rugby much to the annoyance of the people upstairs.
DirtyPanda - 12 Feb 2007 17:09
Great staff, but small bar. And no sexy barmen like the guy at the Crown ad anchor!

Like this place, will come back if I'm in the country again.

Landlord is a great bloke.
Pints are solid, bit expensive.
Great pub.

edb543 - 28 May 2006 15:53
High ceilinged, long wide corridor pub with bare wood, large mirrors and rather wonderful lights on huge and dramatic brass fittings that come curving up from the centre of the mirrors. Three casks: Speckled Hen, Young's Special and the third one off. Price very steep - £3.00 for the Young's. Echoing, empty feel about the place, though nothing too off-putting. Soft, pleasant background music. I remember this from years back when it was a mix of an old man's pub and a theatre pub - now it seems a bit trendy anonymous, but mostly OK.
SilkTork - 20 Apr 2006 23:21
Really enjoyed the place until the very rude american bartender wanted us out and it turned into a rather ugly end to the evening.
mattharvey1 - 20 Apr 2006 12:21
Cracking german, lovely beer and the grubs not bad. Only downside is lunchtime`s you get loads of techie`s coming in from WTG across the road so its well busy.......theres one guy called Justin (i think thats his name) and he gets pretty drunk and just sits there all day.

All in all a superb boozer........
brookwood1 - 14 Mar 2006 15:53
A fantastic place to go for a pint. The landlord is a very nice chap, as are all the staff.
Highly recommended

NormanSpoonBender - 14 Mar 2006 15:31
popped in for a quick one, nice atmosphere, pleasant staff, had football on the tv. all in all a great place to have a drink highly recommened it to anyone who's in the area.
downinone - 14 Mar 2006 15:02
No atmosphere. OK pint of Adnams. Dour barmaid was cleaning glasses using some kind of window cleaning spray. Won't drink here again.
anonymous - 1 Jan 2006 19:05
A pretty decent pub with reasonable atmosphere. Though they could turn the music down a bit.
Peter - 16 Mar 2004 12:16
I've loved this pub since my first visit 1971 and always call in when in town. It's the right size with a sense of historical glamour and intersting personnel.
peter - 9 Mar 2004 21:17
What's with the red light in the upstairs windoe, is this a brothel. The bar is small and a bit dead, maybe the action is upstairs!
Adrian - 18 Feb 2004 20:50
Music too loud to think, manageress too rude to believe (Quote at 9 on a Sunday: "No I will not turn the music as I want people to leave") and a rather poor selection of beers. One I will never return too, despite the fact that the pub itself is rather nice looking. Until management changes, I suggest you avoid.
Anja - 4 Nov 2003 11:40
A small yet beautiful pub located in the heart of historic Covent Garden that does not benefit from having loud moronic music pumped into its tiny downstairs bar, even if it does drown out the noise of the small blaring television located high up on a wall that no one bothers to watch. Nasty neon lights and strange flasing things are gradually creeping garishly across this once oasis of calm and fine company, and in a few more years it may well be the tackiest pub in the world, but until then enjoy it. The beers are nothing special but they do a natty line in crisps if that's the sort of thing in a good night out. The two bar staff can often be run off their feet or busy learning the basic rudiments of the English language, so don't expect attentive service.
Agnes - 19 Aug 2003 16:28
Best Pub in Covent Garden. Its got too small bars, one upstairs with lots of tables for food and more of a drinkers bar downstarirs.
