Woah the last review said 'good quality food' are they mad? I went with my husband and two boys today. My hubby ordered deep fried Brie, which was burnt over fried cheap brie. I had a Jacket with Beans and salad garnish, the potato was fine, there was a teaspoon of beans on each potato, of which were super economy beans, the salad garnish a gesture of lettuce! My youngest had pasta in tomato sauce. This was possibly the worst pasta dish I have ever seen, it was a bland tomato puree sauce containing over cooked pasta that my son couldnt pick up with a fork as it fell apart, bits of bacon fat, and black bits from the pan. Horrific, I would not let him eat it! My eldest had fish fingers and chips, again served with a pale orange display of economy beans. The fish fingers again, brunt deep fried with a mash like consistancy of fish, again an example of the bad quality food they buy in, the chips were OK.
When I showed a staff member the burnt brie, he took the plate to the landlord, who spent what seemed like ten minutes talking about the plate of food. Then finally he came over and rudely asked me what my problem was. I said my husband couldnt eat burnt brie, and straight away he said "well he's started eating it!" Yes, he had started but that was as far as it got. I asked for a refund, he was very hesitant, it was extremley awkward, I could feel my cheeks burning! finally after much thought he said he'd deduct some money for some of the potato wedges my husband had eaten. Then I told him about my sons pasta, he sternly said "No more" It's such a shame the owner has little customer service skills. They need to buy better quality ingrediants, try not to deep fat fry everything till its black, improve customer service skills, explain when ordering that they will shout your table number (I had to ask what the process was) and have I mentioned better quality ingrediants?? Avoid eating here unless you want to get ripped off!!!

Large pub at one end of the village, has three real ales (some from Island breweries) and good selection of lager on.

Food was good quality and value for money.

large beer garden and also has a maze.

Somewhat dingy inside and perhaps in need of modernisation, but it has a huge child friendly garden and many stuffed figures in the trees to spot. We can't vouch for the food as we didn't eat but did enjoy a pint of Ale of Wight. It's opposite the large car/coach park for Godshill tourists so expect it to get busy when another coach disgorges its payload!

My partner and i always visit the griffin every time we go to the island, this year we visited with friends and their family 10 of us all told. We all got seated in the pub at around 1415hrs just missed the carvery (typical me) however our friends ordered steaks my partner and i had a baguette of bacon and melted cheese which was yummy with very strong cheddar, the kids had various items but i do recall one of the kids having a burger from the childrens menu and it was MASSIVE! however he did polish it all off due to a promise to all the kids in our party from Lee our waiter, that if they finish their meals they will get a prize.
I have to say that Lee is a credit to the griffins staff what a great guy (no i wasnt paid to say that) all in all good food great friendly staff well done to the new management

The Griffin is now under new ownership as of mid Nov 2010. We have a new Head Chef, new Menu and new Carvery. We are sure all customers old and new will be very happy with the now very much improved food and service. Come and say hello.

Difficult one this. Last year we came and enjoyed it. Good beer and the food off the menu was generous and tasty for the price. This year we tried the carvery. Oh dear. 'Carvery' is a misnomer. Choice was pre-sliced beef in gravy (yes a bit like frozen stuff..), a chicken PORTION (I kid you not!) or gammon which the guy WAS carving. This was also the first time I have ever noticed the server deliberately COUNTING the slices! (For your information you get 4, or 2 beef and 2 gammon!) And the slices are not big either. Veg was okay but the roast potatoes were also counted out for you by the server.
Quite possibly the worst carvery I have had.
It's a real shame. I accept that they are clearly aiming for the 'family' market, but the disparity between what we had before and this year means The Griffin is off my list from now on....

A decent place for the family to eat out as the portions are good, plus there's a good playground, maze and even a small football pitch to keep the kids amused. Food quality is OK but nothing special. They do serve the local Goddards beers on tap, which is a reasonably good pint, plus the usual range of lagers and ciders you would expect to find.

Excellent family pub with large childrens play area and even its own maze in the shape of what else a Griffin. Unlike the previous reviewer my steak pie and chips was delicious and certainly hadnt seen a microwave

We visited this place for the first time two days ago to eat and to be honest we probably wont be back, although the actual pub looks great and the maze is great too (the reason I have given this place a rating of 3) the food was pretty poor, I dont know if it was an off day but our youngest could barly eat his meal and my cajun cod was dry and to be honest a bit boring, not a good first experience and begrudged paying 65 for a plain and over microwaved meal, wont eat there again sadly..

The best family pub on the Island, if not England. They do basic pub grub, with big portions and a nice pint of Goddards real ale. I probably wouldn't drink here if I didn't have a young family, but it has a huge maze, an adventure playground and the kids get a free gift with their meal which is a nice touch.

Been here several times and as pointed out it's a family pub. Ale was fine though, not worth a visit unless you're a local or staying close by and have no real choice.

Very family orientated, with maze and play areas out back. Nice inside and does a good pint of beer, and food all day. Will generally visit outside peak season or times when it's less busy. The sandwiches, baguettes and salads are very good, but have found main meals a bit pricey.
