please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Booked 3 rooms, got an email after confirmation that they wanted an extra 33% on the room rate to let us stay. They refused any further communication, resulting in us having to cancel our stay at the last minute. Very unhelpful.

Uninspiring Shepherd Neame pub. A couple of their seasonal ales were on (Kent's Best and Early Bird) which were well kept. Does traditional pub grub at about £8 for a main. Friendly staff. Lacklustre decor. Right next to the Abbey and not far from the train station.

In my experience, probably the worst pub in Battle, Shepherd Neame - need I say more!!

Four of us had lunch here on a rainy June day. Staff, quiet and efficient, food, inexpensive but very tasty and well presented. Pub dogs, 2 Springers, great entertainers. If I have a complaint it's a minute one, on the day only one draft on tap but as it was the admirable Shepherd Neame Spitfire, I withdraw the complaint.

Trust me this is currently the best pub in Battle town itself and rates a "Good" or 7 out of 10. It is run by Rick and Sandra who developed a good reputation in the past in Battle at the Senlac and Chequers. The atmosphere on a Friday evening was relaxed , no music, smart casual, predominantly 30-45 age group 50/50 male/female mix. The decor has been lightened up with wood floors and contemporary furnishings. The food was simple, tasty and inexpensive. At the time I visited they featured a number of guest ales; all in reasonable condition. So,essentially a decent pub ticking all the boxes and professionally run without being especially outstanding in any particular aspect. You'd think not a lot to ask of the other pubs on or off the High St in the historic town Battle but for a number of years now sadly it has been too much to ask. We shall no doubt be back in a month or two and I will post a new report if anything has materially changed.

I was surprised to see this pub has such a low rating, but the last reviews date back at least 18 months before my visit. I don't know what it's like in the evenings (maybe that let it down) but I popped in for a lunchtime pint and possibly a bite to eat while passing through Battle, and found a friendly reception. Not a massive fan of Shep but they had Spitfire and Whitstable on, which I had 2 very drinkable pints of.

There's a dining area and large beer garden out the back, and food is expected pub fare, which was pretty good value with a number of veggie options.

My Sussex-living brother having become critically ill we had to immediately go south without researching any BITE reviews in advance. We stayed overnight here and were happy with the pub, beer and clientele. I can only assume its low rating, up to that time the lowest rated establishment I had ever visited, was caused by the local chavs around during the previous management.

Had a couple of decent pints of Kents Best in here last night, the old place is very tired and run down with a very chav and ladette clientelle, the landlord is leaving in a few weeks and I was informed that the new owners are Rick and Sandra who have spent the last few years running the Blacksmiths Inn at Ninfield into the ground, I also heard that the brewery is going to do a large refurbishment. No rating as yet, judgement reserved.

Had some beers after my wedding over the road at Battle Abbey. The staff accomadated us well and the locals were welcoming to us also. Nothing wrong with this place, Sheps beer a welcome bonus.Beats most other Battle pubs hands down. I am not a local to this area but recognising a pub that is trying when I see one !!

An average pub with friendly barstaff. Shepherd Neame beer - I tried 'Kent's Best' which was in good condition and served at a nice temperature.

Another pub in Battle that does NOT stand out. Bland service and what can one say good about Shepard Neame ales. The only good thing about the pub is that it seemed cleaner than most of the other pubs in the area

I agree with my husband on everything he said about the ABBEY!! Graham the owner has gone out of his way to make us feel welcome. After moving here from California and trying out the other local pubs, this is the one place that I have felt very comfortable in. The girls behind the bar are friendly and informstive, I really like them. And it is never boring. Thsnks Graham, you're OK in my book!!! and so is your Pub!!!

I must disagree stronly with the previous comments. We have found this pub to be very freindly and welcoming. It's clean and the Orangiboom is served just right.
The food we've tried here is ample and well cooked with good service to boot.
There's a pool table and plenty of seating.
The usual array of eclectic Battle bar patrons take it in turns to prop up the bar on different days of the week so if you go in there a lot, you won't get bored by the same conversation.
One things though......who on earth chose the tiles in the toilets? Yeuch!

The atmosphere was dreaedful, the beer warm and the food cold. not a good combination. landlord nowhere to be seen to complain to!

I must agree and add the word "dirty"
RubyAvards - 15 Nov 2006 09:45
A pub to be avoided! full of unwelcoming rude oiks, serving cheap, nasty "food" that almost defies description, the beer is insipid, the place is dirty and the staff couldn't care if you didn't enter the premises, so be warned, do'nt bother.
