Now hooked up with the 'BBQ Shack'- a chap who pit BBQs classics such as beef brisket and pulled pork http://www.bbqshack.co.uk/index.html. Mon-Sat there is a menu of meat based sandwiches and grills, on Sunday a 'Southern' themed roast menu combines BBQ Shack meats with Southern style sides. I went for a sample platter of the meats on offer which was great, but the meat doesn't have that 'freshly BBQed' zing as it is slow cooked, delivered to the pub in the morning and then finished off to order, so it is a bit drier than you might expect. The excellent BBQ sauces on offer do provide adequate lubrication however.

The pub itself hasn't been freshened up for a while and is starting to fell a little bit scruffy, beer selection has always been poor and remains so- Arundel Trident and WJ King 'Brighton Best' (brewed in Horsham) were the only two on offer- both deadly dull and pretty grim. Clearly no passion for beer given the choice of great local beers they could stock (as demonstrated in The Evening Star and The Spotted Dog).

So overall, still not a bad choice if you find yourself in the centre of town, and the new BBQ food provides a reason to visit, but there are quite a few pubs in town doing things better and the poor beer selection is a significant blot in this pub's copybook.

Quirky and welcoming, with trendy patrons. King's Brighton Best was in good condition. Handy for this part of town. Didn't try the food but it seemed interesting enough to tempt a further visit.

Visited the pub on Saturday 30th. Tried the "blonde" real ale and wasn't disappointed. My wife enjoyed her red wine too. Pub was filled with a mixture of local types and tourists and seemed a good mix. Only downside was the high prices for the beer.

Visited this pub last May. The ale was spot on (2 Harveys I believe). Food was good, staff were excellent and friendly, this place just felt right. Evenings that week didn't feel right unless I visited. Can't wait to call again in May this year !

I've been to Brighton loads of times but until last week had never visited this pub. It was quiet on Saturday afternoon but we still managed to stay for a couple of rounds. Quirky decor with old LP covers for menus. Friendly staff who served me an excellent pint of Dark Star's Hophead. There is another bar downstairs with character but this was closed on our visit.

Unpretentious pub ideally located just back from the Prom. Top pint of Harvey's Sussex Bitter

Very busy, hard to get a seat but lovely food and atmosphere upstairs, downstairs can be hit and miss but if you hire it out it's ace.

Busier than I've ever seen it before on a thursday afternoon. Geezers in suits. Oh well...

Still decent but it might need to sharpen up its range on tap and it's not particularly exciting.

The menu now appears to change daily, however the range of ales on offer does need to improve. Having said that, you will struggle to find a better pub in the centre of town.

Good beer in a good atmosphere.

What more do you need?

An excellent pub. The interior is really nicely done, especially upstairs. Downstairs there are a lot of sofas and armchairs. Food is really well done, but the menu rarely changes. Some mid-week nights there is live music. A well run pub with a great atmosphere- a nice find in the centre of Brighton.

Its okay in here, interesting decor (waving fans on the walls), but a bit gloomy...

Seems there's a hidden part downstairs and not just a trek to the toilets
Not been packed on my couple of visits here...

The Squid & Starfish will be missed!

Tends to be full of mid 30's Brightonians who are tying to recapture their youth (its open late at the weekends, so they almost feel like they've been clubbing, but without to put up with the noise!).

That said, excellent food!

Next to the backpackers hostel...
Well-kept Guinness as I recall. Suitably dour bar staff but comfortable enough. Grab a stool at the bar and look dour too. It's surpisingly pleasurable.

Would re-visit.

A new pub, close to the seafront, replacing the Squid & Starfish bar. The drinks are fairly run-of-the-mill, but the food menu is astoundingly good, one of the best I've ever seen!
