nice bar staff

Pub now open, (at least it was September 2017). All I heard was the landlord/manager left the pub suddenly............and slightly richer!
Five beers on; 6X, London Pride, Doombar, Theakston's Paradise Ale and Piddle's Slasher.
Not as good as previous visits. Let down by only one barman on duty when ten customers were waiting to be served.

Closed 2 weeks ago according to a notice on the window. Has a prominent position in Christchurch. So I would think it should re-open at some point soon.
blue_scrumpy - 21 Feb 2016 18:50
This should be a classic characterful pub but has a bland insipid feel to it with ale (Piddle) to match.

It's like the Dr Who's Tardis, but in reverse. Looks big on the outside but small inside.
One small squarish room and the main bar long and slim.
Great choice of beers; Aussie Blonde, Piddle, Summer Virgin, 49er and Hopback's Best.
Disappointed with the pizzas serve undercooked and luke warm.
And subjected to Indian piped music.

Down from London visiting local friends. Nice pub - great beer - pint of dark piddle was great and very friendly bar staff who knew their beers. Wanted to stay for food but the friend's missus was set on a curry (not a good idea as it turned out). Definitely would come back.
andrewscotth - 19 Jan 2014 21:52
Poorly kept beer which is more about hype than quality am afraid. This used to be the jewel in the crown of Christchuch's pubs, but is now just a shadow of its former self. I really dislike the way it defends itself by attacking other local establishments as well...........very unprofessional.

Triax - 28 Nov 2013 01:14
I only come here for the beer. That's strictly not true because the staff are very friendly and the (huge) back outside area is a real suntrap and beautifully landscaped with hanging baskets, vines, wisteria etc.

But it is the beer that makes it truly great. The very reasonably priced Piddle £3.00 a pint is complimented by other seasonal and stronger brews from that brewery plus some interesting guests and real cider. food not tried yet but as said I come here for the beer!

went in for a sunday carvery , was seated alongside where the food is served and had a number of people brushing past me and coughing and spluttering and sneezing over where we were eating , we was moved to another table alongside someone with a dog who kept jumping up at its owners table trying to lick his gravy off his plate.
found out after they have a seperate menu for dogs (need i say anymore)
not my idea of an enjoyable sunday lunch sharing with dogs , if you are a dog lover thats fine but not for me and wont be going back.

We loved the food here especially after trying several of the top restaurants in Christchurch, this is the best. Food is reasonably priced and very nice. The fish and chips were lovely and a large portion. The staff were very hospitable and friendly and as a bonus we were able to take the dogs in with us. Fantastic we will be going again.

I came in here on a Tuesday evening to eat with my wife. The pub was quiet, but the barman was friendly and helpful. The selection of ales on offer was fantastic, mainly beers from their own Dorset Piddle Brewery and a couple of local guest beers. I tried their own brew, YOGI, and it was a good, dark pint: very tasty and well kept!

The food here was excellent too. Nice big portions and reasonable prices. I had the steak with diane sauce: cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The mrs went for the mushroom and stilton pasta and said it was perfect.

I'd definitely recommend this pub for food and beer!

Good pub with well kept ales and very friendly, welcoming, staff. All our party, including the dogs, had a good time.
stjohnroe - 11 Oct 2011 21:30
Several pints of Piddle drunk - well kept. Good, friendly staff who know about their beers! We will be going again.
vauni57 - 26 May 2011 15:57
I can concur with the previous post, the prices seem far more reasonable these days. Beers & cider are well kept and the whole place seems more welcoming rather than just relying on screwing the pips out of the tourist market with which it is understandably popular given it's location and excellent courtyard area.

Food prices are still trumpy but the quality is generally good, especially the Sunday carvery.
Blind_Eagle - 13 May 2011 19:00
Went through a bad patch over the winter with high prices and a poor atmosphere, but has reduced their prices for the real ales from their own brewery, seems a lot busier and far better 'feel' now.

In here on Saturday before the game against Bompey. Jimmy Riddle, Piddle, Thunder Box Porter and Slient Slasher with Ringwood 49er and Gipsy's Kiss cider. Historic looking pub, warm and welcoming. Staff efficient and helpful despite about 20 Saints descending without notice. Food was reasonable and decent portions. Recommended as a football alternative to going into Bournemouth, cab was a tenner between four to the ground.
GuideDogSaint - 14 Mar 2011 23:25
Best ale pub in Christchurch (although I am not an unreserved fan of Piddle). Food is excellent but not cheap. Tends to
over play its history (even the menus are "scrolls"). The occasional beer festivals are great. more please!
Uncle_Dunkel - 21 Oct 2010 16:24
Used to be even better, service slow sometimes when younger staff prefer to lark about behind the bar...my rating alters each time I go in! Since owners are less visible now, standards seem to have slipped a little, but still remains the best pub in Christchurch for real ale selection and cider. Good atmosphere.
gongapop - 9 Aug 2010 17:12
Great pub, great beer. Allows dogs (a good thing). Needs to put more vegetarian options on the menu though - what happened to the veggie burger? It was only on the menu for a month or so and then disappeared! The Piddle beers are great though, and they always have a guest brew as well
pgw - 7 May 2010 12:37
Nice to sit outside and watch the world go by. Had a couple of pints of Silent Slasher that hit the spot.

trebor1 - 5 Feb 2010 20:29
Pub seems to be aimed at tourists but appears to do everything right: unspoilt interior, friendly service, excellent beer from the Piddle Brewery and reasonable food(don't, however, like crisps with my baguette).
baxterfish - 14 Dec 2009 11:23
This pub doesn't only do good beer - it also does very decent food. It's a good menu, well cooked. The chips are crispy, the steak properly cooked, and the fish is crispy - not supermarket squidge. There's a good range of puddings as well.
netwiz - 4 Sep 2009 22:46
Interesting and popular old pub, the only one in Christchurch with a GBG entry. Beers from the Piddle brewery, Piddle, Jimmy Riddle and Silent Slasher plus Crop Hop, which I'm not familiar with and something from Idle (South Yorkshire) which ran out just as we were about to order it. The Piddle and Silent Slasher were in top condition and dangerously drinkable, I didn't have a Jimmy Riddle (sorry, but the brewery started it). As well as a keg range there is also New Forest Black Cider which was very much enjoyed by our own Runningdog. Half timberish two room interior, there is a front room accessed off the street, and a back bar with the entrance via the courtyard. Conventional dcor if a little bit chintzy in places although the chamber pots compliment the Piddle beers I suppose. The back bar has some thrones by the bar and a more dining oriented area to the rear. The courtyard is very well patronised and apparently there is a skittle alley somewhere off the courtyard. Staff were a bit over occupied by food orders as there were not quite enough for the customer level, speaking of the punters apart from a couple of dodgy looking old blokes occupying the thrones, they seemed a fairly normal bunch of people of various ages.

oldboots - 18 Aug 2009 16:23
Dived in here for a bite to eat and a pint whilst visiting Christchurch, cant find anything to fault it on. The service was fast and friendly, the food was good and not particularly expensive and the Grim Reaper from the Piddle brewery was excellent, 9/10
Nurke - 14 Apr 2009 13:56
All the ales, 4 from the piddle brewery and 1 guest, last night it was trpple fff, dazed and confused, were in great condition. I just wish they had taken over what is now the O2 shop next door, so was some more indoor space.
justdarkbeer - 20 Mar 2009 01:25
This used to be my regular pub when Dave and Margaret ran the place back in the 1990s. I stopped going in when it turned from a boozer with excellent lunchtime pub food into a foody place - e.g. all tables had a sign on them saying 'Reserved For Diners'. I was persuaded to go in to try it out again, and although my view on the place as food first beer second hasn't changed, I must admit it was quite pleasant, and the ales were in good nick.
afullpint - 22 Feb 2009 17:50
Quaint is the word here, very old building with courtyard. The choice of ale is very good kept and I do like to eat out at places such as this one.

*Thanks Sinead and staff

One of my fav pubs in Christchurch simply because it has a lovely seated courtyard that is superb to sit in during the summer. Food is generally good and the beer is better. May I take this opportunity to appologise to all the staff for puking all over their toilets a couple of yeas ago. If you are in Christchurch and looking to go somewhere to eat go here!
pistolpetebingay - 12 Apr 2008 21:47
Now has their own 'house brew' yogi bitter, not brewed at the george though. (YOGI = Ye Old George Inn), otherwise still just as good as ever.
justdarkbeer - 20 Jan 2008 21:44
Great atmoshphere in this place. Maybe because of the size but it always feels friendly. Food was ok when I last ate but we normally just come here for drinks on our way to somewhere else.
bishop1 - 2 Aug 2007 11:54
There are signs up advertising some award it has won for its food, and while it is pricey it is as good as anything I have eaten in a pub anywhere. The mixed grill was superb.

Beer was good too. One thing I noticed was that on a Saturday most of the tables in the bar were reserved for diners and there were plenty of people who turned up "on spec" to eat who had to go somewhere else. Book up, or get there early, if you want to eat on a Saturday in summer.

Staff very friendly and efficient and definitely somewhere I will detour to sample next time I'm near Christchurch.

Visited this pub before seeings a show at the Regent Centre just round the corner - were made to feel very welcome as soon as we entered the pub - food was excellent and served fairly promptly - piping hot !! They have a lovely courtyard for warmer evenings. We will definately visit again.
musicjunkie - 7 May 2006 15:36
Great little pub, friendly service and always at least 3 real ales to choose from.
anonymous - 8 Jan 2006 18:11
Lovely food - well cooked.
Avjpmass - 7 Aug 2005 22:19
The most expensive of the five pubs that we visited yesterday but the Caledonian 80 shillings was in top condition. Staff were efficient and friendly. This place hasn't seen much change over the years which is to be applauded although the beer is much improved from the days when it used to be a Whitbread tied house.
johnkn7 - 10 Jul 2005 20:02
Nice pub, good beer but bloody expensive!
Glenn - 8 Jul 2005 22:02
what a great pub,
its not full of young teens trying to look 18 at the weekend.
its a good old pub. the pub has won best pub food a ward in 03 and again this year.
the court yard and staff are fantastic.i found boards telling you about the histroy of the pub intrsting
yes..... i thing the ya ole george is a all round good place
alipaly2 - 19 Jun 2005 00:48
The Ye Ole George Inn, still remains as a worthy place in the mist of change. This historic coaching inn has certainly tried to attract the tourists. We must however have to compare this with the old Castle Inn which is now called the Soho (a bottle bar). Also the Ship, has now become just a another wine bar and eatery. So the Ye Olde George could be better - but at least it has not yet sold out.

I can't stand all the tosh about highwaymen, coaches to London, Nell Gwyn, etc. And what the hell is the Gift Shop all about? It is a big sham. I remember the place when Dave was the landlord - he could be an obnoxious git, but it was great fun watching him kick out students, stop passers-by using the loos, tell customers that they would have to buy a dring as he was not running a charity, etc - but his Ringwood 49er was the absolute best.
Billy - 20 Oct 2004 17:16
The George is an old coaching inn. It has Ringwood 49er and Wadworth 6X - so as far as the ale is concerned it is OK. Also it has jazz on Thursdays, and folk on a Friday. In addition the George has an historic courtyard, where you can sit out, and dream about the horses being changed for the stagecoaches. There is a notice that tells us to "Beware of Highwaymen - but is this genuine? Anyway, it has still kept the link with the old - as the George has not needed to go trendy.
