OMG What's happening????

The previous landlords of the Crown have recently retired and new tenants have been running the pub for a little over a week now. First impressions look good. There are slightly longer opening hours. Beers were very good and included some from Brass Castle and Greyhawk as well as Village Brewer. There could perhaps have been one from a local micro. In the longer term there appear to be intentions to offer more food but the homemade cakes looked good.

I have used this Pub for many years and never found anything untoward. It's a village pub for Gods sake, how people can leave derogatory reports baffles me.
Perhaps they should just stay away!! Leave us to enjoy our REAL ALE in piece

The Crown Inn is a wonderful country pub with a wide following from far and wide. I have been visiting it for 7-8 years now (I certainly wouldn't call myself a regular though) and what brings me back are all of those elements that for me a great pub should have. Excellent and well managed beer (with plenty of CAMRA awards to boot), a good atmosphere, a good mixed clientele and a wonderfully friendly, knowledgeable, humorous and welcoming landlord and landlady. It is spacious, welcoming and very clean and in the colder times of year has a wonderful open fire that is always well stoked. The events they hold at different times of the year are well worth a visit, especially the beer festivals.
One or two of the comments above can be happily disregarded. I can only assume they are posted from pubs that may feel they are in competition with this one - don't even try because it is a one horse race (and some of the other local pubs are very nice too) - or they are posted by people who spend their lives looking for the negatives even if they don't exist just so they can have a whinge on web sites like this. The staff are excellent and I can't think of a cleaner and more well run pub. It is a credit to those who run it and I must say many of those who frequent it too. Keep it going guys and for those thinking of paying it a visit, don't think too much just go.

We've been coming to this pub regularly for the past nine years. Why? Simply - it's the best country pub for a radius of many miles. It has really nice surroundings including a walled garden, atmosphere, a wide range of real ales always in tip-top condition, a great welcome, beer and cider festivals, and, yes, it's very clean!
The Crown has been winning CAMRA awards for year after year which is a just reflection of this pub's excellence.

It seems like some people are gluttons for punishment. If they dont like the pub dont go. I dont visit places i dont like twice. maybe they are just nit picking. i regularly got to the Crown open mic nights and quizzes as well as Beer festivals and also just because. its the best pub for miles around and if ever there is a problem with the beer or anything else a quiet word with the people in charge gets a satisfactory answer.

In the area again so visited The Crown. Pleasantly surprised to find the place looking so much better than last time. I did comment that it was in need of a good clean and I must have been right because it has had one!!! (well in most parts and the decorating to be completed soon). The staff however remain quite incompetant at times and some are unable to pull a pint properly!!! Training now needed I think.

I think the 2 reviews left by single pub posters on the 9th February can be safely disregarded. The Crown Inn is a nice country pub and has no need for any refurbushment and no need to focus on the cleanliness of the toilets. 8 real ales were on - Bradfield Farmers Brown Cow, Saltaire Chocaholic, Hopback Dragon's Breath, Taylor Landlord, Marstons Pedigree, Theakston Best, Village Brewer White Boar and Castle Rock Harvest Pale. Unfortunately, there was no real cider. Thatchers Gold was the keg cider. But the landlord did say he had 2 ciders ready for a festival this coming weekend along with 20 Royal Wedding themed beers and live music. The pub has two main drinking areas. We sat in the main bar area, where elderly locals were gathering. Continuing around the bar, you get to another area where younger folk were gathering and listening to rather loud music whilst playing pool. Complimentary chips on the bar were a nice touch. Well worth a visit.

Like others have mentioned, the two negative posts below dont match this lovely country pub - were they thinking of 'Mansfield' rather than Manfield??
Anyway, I always make a point of visiting this pub whenever in the area and have always found a great range of beers (6 to 8 on tap), friendly and knowledgeable staff, and clean, spacious, welcoming surroundings. This pub has won so many local awards and continues to do so (local CAMRA pub of the year 2011), as well as hosting interesting community events and beer festivals.
Always a beer on from local brewer ( white boar), then rotating guests - on my last visit tried Marston Moor, Tim Taylors and Sharps. The food menu looks good, but I go for the beer not food, so can't comment on that.
My only complaint is that because this is in a quiet, rural area it doesn't open until 5 pm during the week, so no good if you wanted an afternoon drink in their sunny garden, or to browse their extensive collection of interesting books if it was a rainy day in the dale.

We are regulars at this pub and also can't understand some previous comments - did they really visit this pub or somewhere else?
Always a good welcome, beer at the same price as most other places I visit or sometimes slightly cheaper.
Don't use the toilets that often but when I have they have been immaculate (male side).
Certainly wouldn't slate the decor but apparently is going to be done soon - wouldn't have thought it needed doing.

Winner of Darlington camras country pu of the year 2011 which is now 9 years so they must bedoing something right.

It has been some time since my husband and I visited The Crown in Manfield, but we were in the area recently and popped in. I was very disapponted to find the pub in an unkempt state. The bar area is dirty and in need of decorating. The toilets are smelly and in need of a good clean. The area behind the bar looks uncared for. The staff would do better if they did a bit of cleaning instead of just standing there, the lack of customers was not enough to keep them busy!!! It is a shame to find the pub in such an uncared for state, perhaps that accounts for the lack of customers.

Oh What a Shame!!
This used to be a a superb pub but seems to have gone down hill over the past couple of years.
The place looks dirty and could do with a coat of paint, the beer is now well over priced and the staff were more interested in checking their mobile phones than serving customers on my last visit.
Other people must be thinking the same as the pub does not seem as busy as it used to be.
A jewel in the Crown but not any more.

Nice enough village pub. Lots of real ales. Food is varied and good... However.. Drinking there is very ... very expensive....
dartswinedrinker - 15 Nov 2010 21:34
Went to the cider festival saturday what a great day. It was so busy they ran out of cider but went back on Sunday and had great beer as usual. Music was fantastic and only cost a donation to St Theresas hospice.
KAZZERH - 19 Jul 2010 16:40
A real country pub as it should be. Real ales always great. Been to a few specials nights and food is always good and service excellent. Worth seeking out as its a bit out of the way, but one of the best for beers.

Great pub , impressed every time i visit. Dogs welcome . Great Beer. This is how to run a pub!!!!
mineisalandlord - 27 Sep 2009 19:58
Great staff, great beer, easy atmosphere.
They do great beer festivals, though you have to get there early as they sell out quickly - they are that popular, and the place can get extremely busy for a small rural establishment.
superb for a warm summers night.
Ignore the comments about the hunting thing - its a rural community, the beer is brewed by a local chap who named his beers after local heraldry and history. - and even if the name does effect the inane sensibilities of some the beer tastes fantastic.

I went to the beer festival and had a fantastic time . 20 odd beers to choose from on friday went back on sat and they were running out quickly but I still think they had 10 at end of evening. Went back on sunday afternoon for a great bbq and they had got beer in so back to 15 to choose from. Went to the cider festival this weekend and the bands were great not a fantastic turn out but 15 ciders to choose from as well as the usual 8 beers spoilt for choice excellant pub
KAZZERH - 14 Jul 2008 17:32
The Crown beer festival - or not - when we arrived - Sat evening and the festival is supposed to run until Mon, there were only 4 beers left from the 15 odd on the list. The staff were the rudest I have ever come across in any pub anywhere in Britain. This pub/event has the potential to be great but the attitude of the staff and the lack of preparation leads me to conclude that I could do better in any chain of any nasty beer pub in the country. They should be ashamed of their service - they bring down the reputation of Yorkshire sociality and village country life. Damned poor!

Good pub , fine beer and well kept , shame it isn't in the middle of darlington.
mineisalandlord - 11 Mar 2008 15:59
Good pub, used to drink here with my dad, and the people were always friendly. Good Landlord as well. Would recommend.

What a Gem! Yorkshire Pub of the Year 2005.Warm welcome every time from the chirpy Landlord, his Wife and excellent staff (some of whom I have seen working at the amazing Number Twenty 2 in Darlington). I have'nt come across any biggots yet; locals, business people and their families, farmers, all sorts of people enjoying GOOD ALE in a GREAT PUB. What's this bollocks about White Boar Bitter and fox hunting......
The White Boar was the centre of the "Coat of Arms" of Richard 111 and is carved on the window cill of the castle at Barnard Castle and is a part of the Coat of Arms of Lord Barnard...White Boar Bitter and Old Raby Ale....gettit! biggots...foxhunting grow-up.

Excellant pub for beer small choice of good food.A nice welcome from landlord landlady and staff.Beer festival next weekend Sept 1-3rd good choice of beers coming and great bands.
KAZZERH - 26 Aug 2006 13:59
There is a limited menu of good food served at this fine hostelry but the main aim here is to serve fine beer. The landlord told me that chips are never served as it ruins the flavour of a good ale. Unfortunately pubs like this are few and far between these days. Well worth a slight detour off the roman road if you are travelling south from Edinburgh to Scotch Corner the pretty way.
mactavish - 18 Jul 2006 13:15
Very in keeping with my theory that: All pubs in County Durham are crap and, it is not until you go over the border to north yorkshire, that a decent ale and alehouse can be found. This is a welcoming real ale pub which is the little brother of Number 22's in Darlington. There are a few biggots that frequent here but mainly the cliental is sound. Be aware however that white boar ale is in some way connected to fox hunting.
