I know its a beer site, not a food site, but you have to eat here to be able to drink..

My currywurst was very poor, and there wasn't much of it, so overall, very bad value.

Such a shame, as the location is nice and I do like the idea...

Very nice but really expensive - £10 for a pint and a sausage!

Magellan, was that her bra size or was she eastern european? If it's the former, I'm SO going there tonight!

Bavarian beer garden for the family and fair-weather days (the latter on account of the benches all being out-doors).

Nice place on a quiet stretch of the river away from the open air booze terrace just north of the road bridge.

There is also the potential for getting your feet wet or of being stranded on the spring tide.

Service was mixed: the EE waitress did not want to know, but the German staff behind the counter were friendly.

You need to go to the counter to order the food (pre-requisite) and then the beer (Paulaner £3.20 pp, or Erdinger).

Bratkart now £7.20.

More of a beer patio than garden, staff were german, you now only seem to have to buy a light lunch, a second beer is allowed & the beer is served in pints. a pleasant place to stop , though not a destination place , just to go if the weather is good & u happen to be in richmond,
though better Than the bavarian beerhouse in city Road, That I have never been able to get in to.

A cold beer by the river - perfect!
A dodgy tummy after a slice of their meatloaf - not so perfect.

Not a bad quaint little place by the river serving beer in glasses the size of your wishful thinking. But ridiculous (no doubt council-enforced) rules about having to buy a main course before being served beer. Fortunately the food is excellent, well I suppose it depends on whether you like German fare (and don't mind violently breaking wind for hours after sampling the sauerkraut).
I agree though that it takes forever to get served, two separate queues for food and booze add to the agony.
The waitresses are bl**dy grumpy too and the guy that served me beer was about 14, strange for a place that seems hooked on council regulations.

Reasonably OK. You have to queue forever to get served beer though, there were no German staff there the last time I visited.

I spent a year in Thüringen as a student and I'd forgotten the pleasures of drinking delicious German beer from glasses that require two hands to lift them. The Pauliner is lovely. Never been a fan of wheat beer (tastes like baked beans) so can't comment. I found the service fine. Didn't try the food but if they really do serve authentic Thüringer bratwurst then I shall return cos they're amazing. It was summer when I visited but for winter - how about turning it into an authentic German imbiβstübe and selling proper glühwein? Mmmm...

Gruessdi.

I've been to the beergarden couple of times and I love it. It is traditionally. You have to get your beer yourself, It is normal that you only have to choices of beer. And actually: you have three because you can order "Radler" as well.
You also have a typically children's playground.

You shouldn't really have a baked potatoe if you try to eat "german" stuff.
Try "Kaesespaetzle" (thick - cut homemade egg noodles with cheese) or "Weisswurst" (bavarian veal sausage). They are excellent.

Anyway. Maybe it is something special for german that the have a place to go to if they want to have a bit of origin.

Try it. Go with friends and have a good time. Even with real Bavarian music in the backround.

Hello
as it often is the case. There are people who like things, and people who dislike things. Some liked the food, some didn't. I just wanted to say that I've been to Richmond last weekend as the weather was fab on Sunday. We passed the Bavarian "Stein" beer garden and it was amazing, how authentic it is to the German beer gardens. (which are not only in Bavaria of course!). I do live in London but am German. On our way back we sat down for a nice Paulaner lager and some Munich white sausages with "Brezel". It was very good. I don't know about the other food, but will go back soon and try it as they have 2 specialities from my region on the menu as well. The service was very friendly (always depends who serves you I guess). The view is great and it feels like being in Germany in a beer garden. Really enjoyed myself of having a bit of "Heimat" here in London. Definitely will come back!
Give it a try! Only then you can say whether you like it or not.

Visited lunchtime today.

It's not quite a pub like the other placed reviewed here - you have to buy food in order to have beer. There is a choice of two beers only - a wheat beer and Paulaner lager for £3.20 a pint.

The Paulaner was very nice, and since I don't normally drink lager that's a significant compliment.

The service was very disappointing. You have to order at a hatch, after choosing a table number. It wasn't busy at 12:25pm, but I was fed up that the bloke behind the till who watched me approach then spent 10 seconds looking at his mobile phone messages and only started serving me when I asked if there was anywhere else I was supposed to order. He never smiled once - not at me, nor at the other people he served in the following 20 minutes.

The woman who served the beer was fine, and smiled just like you expect; as did the woman who delivered the food.

But the food itself was poor. £5.40 for a baked potato (Folienkartoffel) with salad and a creamy dressing; it had been cooked on another day, then heated up but remained cold in the middle, and it was brown inside, so we left it about one third finished.

£5.40 for a sausage and fried potatoes (Thuringer Bratkart); the sausage was okayish, but the potatoes had been boiled first before frying, and hadn't been boiled for long enough so they were crunchy in the middle, like an apple.

On the plus side, it's a lovely view and the beer was good. On the minus side, there's a limited choice of beer, it's expensive, the food is very poor, and the main member of staff was unwelcoming.

Okay, so I haven't visited this place yet - but what a great place it looks!

An outdoor Bavarian bar overlooking the Thames at Richmond.

German sausages and Bavarian beer in large glasses.

It looked fantastic in the July sunshine. Goodness knows what they'll do in the wintertime.

I'll visit it next week.
