Good real ale pub on a street corner in the heart of Hatfield's picturesque Old Town, very close to the station. Eclectic mix of locals, several alcoves and small rooms lead off the bar. Three real ales on tap when we visited, good craic with the locals, darts league ongoing in another room. Only disappointment was that the toilets were fairly unsanitary, lock on the gents cubicle didn't work, fire extinguisher left inside to prop the door shut!

Visited during lunch time so apart from a few locals it was a small tourist invasion. Lovely looking place, a clear mixture of a couple of buildings knocked into one. Old beams and wooden floors, really liked the tables with huge metal bolts sticking up. Not one large open space but a proper bar area with alcoves, all very nice. Staff were excellent, very friendly. Three ales on, but one was DoonBar all the way from Cornishland. An Oxford and Young's Best were the others. Both summer light/golden types. For some strange reason the brewer had John Smith's there as well. WHY. Thatcher's Gold cider also on tap. Food was not the standard menu though there were favourites on it. had the fish and chips and it was good and a fair price. A smashing PH, do visit.

Free Wi-Fi too - which is something which always encourages me to stay in a pub.

I popped in there for the open mic night and had a decent pint of Piledriver. A nice intimate and genuinely old pub.

I popped in here one lunchtime and was the only customer. The surly, chain-smoking tattooed bar man might be a reason. Just a thought...

This pub has certainly had problems in the past, especially with it's beer. The last and current owners have however put a lot of effort into turning the pub around to the point where I'd describe it as a thoroughly welcoming and decent pub that can turn out 3 very good real ales. To my mind it can now be favourably compared to the better pubs in Hertfordshire's pub Mecca - St Albans.

Very poor I thought. I visited during some football match and had a pint of lager amidst a bunch of football morons talking crap. The inside of the pub has real charm which is totally ruined with a redundant fireplace containing dried flowery stuff and a great big flat screen telly for the morons. A real shame. Hopefully the pub will endure until its charm potential is realised once more.

I agree that this is an old pub that should be visited as it has a lot of character with low ceilings, snug areas and an inglenook, but I wouldnt want to spend all night in here.

The R and B music seemed to be more for the barmaid than the customers, but she was extremely friendly and made me feel very welcome.

There are three hand pumps, but two are unused with the other dispensing Greene King IPA which is a little lazy on behalf of the management.

There is a dartboard which is good to see, but I still think that this place is more worth a look for the building rather than the atmosphere and beer.

The pub is old and has character, though that included a leaky roof - albeit the other side of the bar. There was only one beer on offer the evening I went - Greene King IPA - but it was well kept and a decent pint. I felt it was the sort of pub I'd want to include in a pub crawl of Hatfield, but not spend all evening there (unless they normally do have more than just Greene King on tap!). Difficult to know how to rate this one - did I go on an off day?

A proper old fashioned pub - bit worn on the edges - but very enjoyable. Food good, though the burger was dry. Would go again!

A bit scruffy inside, but a good cheap baguette and baked potato, and a decent pint of Bombardier. Friendly service.

Quite a nice pub. You could stay away for 10 years and on your return see the same regulars

Lovely traditional old pub in a village-like part of Hatfield very close to Hatfield House. The pub features in the Dickens book 'Oliver Twist' - not much here can have changed since the 1830s.

This place is better now it's had a makeover. It does food again now, although the options are pretty limited, and I wasn't impressed with my steak. It doesn't do *any* vegetarian mains, the only thing it really does that is vegetarian is cheese sandwich. It appeared to have a jukebox, although I don't know if anyone was actually using it or if it was the choice of the bar staff but they had early 90s dance on the other day.

I would say, if you want a good meal, go to the Horse and Groom round the corner, but if you want a pint try here, I think it's better kept and has a good selection of bar nibbles.

A cracking little boozer being returned to it's old self. Full to briming with Locals, Students, Office types and the lot.
There have been days when this quality Pub was let down by the old management but now it really is getting it's 'classic' tag back.

Quiet little tucked-away pub with a lot of history. Was in Dickens classic 'Oliver', I believe. Very cosy - nice on a Sunday night
