user reviews of the Horn, Reading

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Usually a good pub. The barstaff at the moment are feckless though.

Emily the barmaid on today is extremely slow and disinterested. She was showing a new barmaid the ropes today and very quickly she was also in the kitchen hiding out pretending to wash glasses and reading her phone.

Meanwhile staff are waiting to be served. The regulars had to call them a few times to serve people.

Staff like Emily and whoever she trains will cause serious damage to this pub's profits and good reputation.

Great service and a great selection of ales; what more can you ask for? Top marks to the landlady, one of the most pleasant individuals to serve behind a bar which when you consider the competition in the area is top praise indeed.

Fantastic pub great real ail don't know what the Whisky diet and camera colin are on about probably old farts with nothing better to do but generate nasty comments about people that don't even work in the pub as far as I am concerned the beer is great the food is home cooked and real good the staff are friendly and they are so excited about big changes afoot with a new fresh paint job arriving soon

You mean DJ Dan the Pie-Step General who also gigs at The Sun up the road? With his ever ready Numark decks and a fresh batch of pies this guy is a-rollin' literally! I hear he is treating his good lady to a romantic night out at that most avant-garde of Valentine's venues; Burger King. Mind you the King are offering an all week £1.99 Whopper deal so methinks everyday will be Valentine's this week for the Pie-Step general eh?

Greg, it wouldn't surprise me if the ever desperate 'spoons chain started hosting "Which Wetherspoon's Employee (past & present) Has The Biggest Gut?" nights. Granted in the Reading area they'd have plenty of contenders; Dan and his missus alone would be strong contenders although I'd still say Claire from Monks would win hands down.
camra_colin - 2 Jan 2013 18:19
Good to see Theakstons beers appearing more often now. Beer condition seems to be getting better as well.
Beermole - 15 Dec 2012 15:30
that ham burglar is dan used to work in bobs. since he left gut has obviously become main priority. he isn't related to claire from monks as there is a striking resemblance. either that or fella is up the duff!
chelsea_greg - 15 Dec 2012 14:42
Turn it in "whisky diet"or should I say David from Bob's kitchen. Why not take your guide dog back to the Monks and stop trolling these here forums eh?
camra_colin - 2 Dec 2012 14:17
Under new management although some very odd new rules too; you can now take your own food in apparently as I witnessed a ham-burglar working on his atkins the other week. Looked like the old chef from Bobs only 20 stone heavier!
whisky_diet - 30 Nov 2012 16:37
Traditional pub architecture but now geared to football and rugby on TV. Three real ales are often from Caledonian or national brands, but seldom in great nick. Could be so much better.
Beermole - 1 Nov 2012 15:12
Decent enough pub with three hand pumps serving today Green king Abbot , Young's London Porter and Caledonian Dutchman. The Dutchman was in excellent condition. Very quiet given the early hour , only called in while waiting for the Allied Arms over the road to open at 12.00,but I was glad I did , worth a look for a pint.

nice comfortable pub with tealights on tables and relaxing atmosphere, three ales of which i opted for pint of theakston lightfoot (3.40)which was decently kept,7/10
fat_beer_badger - 29 Apr 2011 13:05
Brains SA, Caledonian Chocolate Drop and something else (poor memory today!) on yesterday. The Brains was OK but getting past it's best. 3.30 a pint. Basic food menu. Worth visiting.

As long as they've got rid of those dodgy korean types the last landlord was so fond of...

The Horn is a lovely old pub with very friendly staff and management; they service 3 guest ales which change regularly with an eclectic mix from all over the UK. Graeme the bar manager is a keen real ale drinker who keeps a great cellar and will happily try to get real ales on request.
It is nice to have 3 decent real ale bars so close together: Allied Arms, The Horn and Zero Degrees.
Those who complained that it is a rugby pub that seems to prefer football may be pleased to know they will happily show both at the same time; one in each bar!

There4U - 20 Mar 2011 14:50
Rugby is also shown in 3 Guinea's, Nags Head, and Allied (if you can afford to drink in the Allied)

A precious relic of olde Reading. A pub clearly many 100's of years old that appears to have been last furnished in the 1950's and which seems to change ownership regularly.
Thankfully the previous owners Thai food experiment failed, lest it may have followed a similar fate to the old Mitre Inn on West Street (now Thai Corner).
It must be preserved for the good of Mankind, being one of only a tiny handful of genuine old Inns left in Reading. The beer isn't bad either.
RichRichMan - 18 Nov 2010 00:25
Claims to be "the Rugby pub in Reading". The place has been hijacked and football is now shown over Rugby. The only place you can be sure rugby is shown is still the Gateway.
Badgerwasp - 14 Nov 2010 18:56
New management trying to attract new customers? The new home of London Irish? Well, please tell me how come a pint of Jennings Bitter is 3.30 yet a half is 1.80 ??!!!??? All they have done is encourage me to go elsewhere - to a pub where a half pint costs half of a pint.
mcroyal - 24 Sep 2010 21:19
they still got the gooks in the house or kicked em to the slant eyed kerb aye?
anonymous - 22 Sep 2010 14:36
The pub under new management - they have really cleaned the place up, no more dodgy types loitering in the gents etc. - good ales on now, seemingly nice clientele as well.
Apparently they will soon be doing food in the evening as well. I definitely recommend it now.
Mikeyrush - 23 Jul 2010 14:29
Under new management. Quite a transformation with a clean up and now quite pleasent. No more dubious 'oriental ladies' or druggies.

I don't mind going in there now.
Badgerwasp - 4 Jul 2010 16:33
oriental girls .... I wish I had known earlier!!!Im off there now then rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
michmet - 2 May 2010 20:05
Not a bad pub. Came in here after watching Titanic 12 years ago and didn't go back until 2 days ago. It seems to be run by Thai people and they do Thai food. Nearly every single draught drink was off (only Fosters, I think, was on. Still, I quite liked it somehow. Nice beams.
Greshon - 7 Dec 2009 11:32
Good corner location not far from Reading's central area. Attractive old wooden interior around the bar area but a little drab in other parts of the single U shaped room. Pool table to one side, to the other there is seating on distressed leather covered benches and a screen for Sky Sports, beyond that a dining area. Active, friendly bar staff, but it was very quiet when I was there in the early evening. Two handpulls, one not in use, the other badged as Bombardier but actually serving London Pride, which was flat and uninteresting but drinkable. Smiths Smooth, Fosters, 1664, Guinness and Sagres keg beers plus Strongbow and Bulmers keg ciders.

oldboots - 18 Aug 2009 16:16
Looks a bit dead - has it closed?
PubMessenger - 30 Mar 2009 10:09
Bit of a strange pub that has probably seen better years. Efficient and friendly staff and the bottled Black Sheep was good value at 2.15. There were a lot of oriental girls around beholden to older English blokes, all seemed a bit sad really.

Millay - 2 Feb 2009 21:35
This is an excellent pub if you're looking for somewhere to have a quiet pint or something to eat. Had the chicken breast to eat which was very nice and very good value too. Disappointed that Bombardier was the only ale available. Staff were friendly but alas the toilets were somewhat grotty.

This ain't a bad pub but the only purpose you'd go here for is a bite to eat or just a chilled pint. Otherwise best go elsewhere...

7/10

Beer still bad (when it's on), atmosphere still sour, one of the worst places in town.

Which is a shame, as it could be pretty good in the right hands.
Quinno - 18 Feb 2008 20:05
Used to be my local (before I was converted to real ale) found it a nice place with friendly landlord (Mark)and bar staff. Caroline who used to work Sunday evenings was particularly friendly, not sure if she's still there. Never had food but met some good people and played some pool

Feculent pit!
No real ale on tap and my cottage pie was full of frozen meat.
Save your money and your intenstines and run to the hills.
londinieres - 26 Jul 2007 22:40
Common and dirty, and thats just the staff.
Nero - 16 May 2007 15:35
Weird little place. Very local, my pint was OK though.
DeggyT - 5 Nov 2006 00:22
Really really disliked this pub.

Went in and there was no real ale (despite it being advertised outside, so ended up with a Newcy Broon.

Then went over and had a go on the quizzer (note to fellow quiz machine Moths: the Bully game took us almost instantly onto the prize board, so a few quid to be made here). Anyway we noticed that someone had left their wallet behind, so we took it over the bar to hand it over. The response from the barmaid?
"Well you should have brought this over 10 minutes ago, he was in here looking for it then". No that wasn't a joke either. She meant it.

Appalling.
Quinno - 3 Aug 2006 21:36
OK, but only one real ale (Spitfire) on tap. Not a bad pub by any means, but there is far better to be had in Reading.
anonymous - 16 Dec 2005 17:20
Small old pub with friendly bar staff and punters.
ray - 28 Jan 2004 21:43
Do a cracking sunday roast.
