Full of dodgy wedding reception guests from town hall over the road. Staff rude and indifferent. A bit poncey and unwelcoming.

I visited this bar yesterday and have to disagree with the more positive reviews. The staff were dreadful - rude, slow and inexperienced. The clientele were extremes - shotgun wedding parties and ghastly middle-class type people with children called Tarquin and Leif. The clothes sense (why do people dress like that at weddings) is well worth a laugh but otherwise this is an expensive, very cliquey venue. I certainly wouldn't recommend it - limted ales and expensive too.

Fine for the wedding crowds that come from the town hall opposite. Otherwise dreary trendy bar which leaves one underwhelmed with the poor atmosphere.

i went in to this pub for the first time in ages recently and it seems to have had an atmosphere makeover as it was pleasant and busy again .. might even try the food next time !

Went for a wedding breakfast last Friday, great food, very helpful staff, nice drinks.

This is a nice enough gastro pub with friendly staff and it was one of the busier pubs that I went into on a recent crawl of Eastbourne.

Harveys Best and Thwaites Original were both available alongside a mix of standard a premium draught products. There is also a leaning towards cocktails, but thats not really my cup of tea.

Half of the pub is taken up with dining tables, but the bar area is pleasant and big enough to allow a comfortable beer or two.

This is the sort of place that Id take the wife to keep her happy, but I dont think that Id be mister popular if I dragged the lads down for a session.

I am a Brit who now lives in Florida and I have just spent a couple of weeks in the U.K., being mostly disappointed with the standard of pub cuisine and catering.

Tonight, on my last night in the U.K., I tried Bibendum and the visit has restored my faith in the Bristish Pub.

The staff were enthusiastic, knowledgeable, courteous and a pleasure to be served by.

The food was innovative, fresh and beautifully prepared and cooked.

Thank you Bibendum for preventing me from going back to Florida thinking that a good quality British Pub/Bar was a thing of the past.

Well done and, providing you maintain your superb standards, I wish you every success

Dear Jenny Herbert

I am not a member of staff .I just wrote a customer review.Have you addressed you concerns to the staff or Toby the manager? If you don't like it then why are you still going (for a year)?I assume you would like to keep the pub in business and if you can make it nice then that is only a good thing.

Best wishes
gary

Wanting to post a review about this bar I read the previous ones and assume the last one must have been written by a member of staff as it reads like an advert. My experience was slightly different, we have been using this bar for the last year, my friends and me agree that this bar has lost its va va voom. Its food has deteriated, the service takes an age, the staff are inexperienced, and I agree with one of the other reviewers it is dreary. Youd think with the credit crunch they'd be making an effort, its now quite a dated bar and is kinda old fashioned and is soooo expensive.

I enjoy Bibendum. It has friendly staff in Toby ,its young landlord, Janelle, Sophie and Hannah - all very beautiful to name a few. It can suffer with lack of atmosphere but that it is because there is no extras like a pool table or sky. This may be deliberate as it is a really nice place just to go for a chat , drink and bite. It is also good at catering for Weddings,Funerals, birthdays being near the Town Hall and two large Churches. It has an outside seating area with heaters. Can offer Casino nights

Have only been to a reception in the function room which was pretty good. Nice food and polite (although inexperienced) staff. Did have a drink in the main bar - the sofas, continental beers in the cooler and the cocktail menu all scream trendy wine bar but overall not that bad - I've drunk in worse!!

Dreary. Typical Eastbourne.

took my girlfriend to this bar for a meal. Have to say not very good, expensive mediocre food, drink very expensive, more expensive than any other bar i've been to in eastbourne. There are better places to go won't be recommending

Had dinner here this weekend, unfortunately this place is over hyped. The food is OK a bit pretentous the main course was very bland and under seasoned. The staff in this bar have changed, not for the better the restaurant staff need some training in customer service the supervisor was not very useful. wont be eating here again or recommending it!

I was a bit disappointed with this pub - menu looked quite good - although a bit limited for vegetarians, hence when they ran out of the one dish my son could eat we struggled to find alternatives. Even their chips and potato wedges are cooked with the meat (although credit to them for being truthful about this) and they wouldn't serve a half portion of another dish either. In the end I did enjoy what I ordered but was left feeling like we were a nuisance despite being some of the only customers in the place. Wouldn't go again.

A sad trendy wine bar. Used to sell good beer but has become a sad haven for the kind of people who can't afford to live in Brighton. Only visit there if you're eating. Oh, and someone else is paying...

Good pint of Stella- pleasant barmaids. host seemed rather boring and really needs to work on his jokes. lack of UV in the toilets. Interesting choice of clients-especialy the dark haired man (obviously dyed!)

This is a wonderful warm and vibrant wine bar. The food is well cooked, presented and of good sized portions. The selection of beers is very well thought out and there are some interesting wines. In all a really nice place to go to a good time with friends !

The bar snacks here are good and very good value for money. I can not say the same for the main meals. It is packed on the weekend and the atmosphere is really nice. It is much more geared towards selling wine rather than beer though.

GOING STEADILY DOWNHILL, ESPECIALLY THE FOOD. SHAME.
KITCHEN - 6 Jun 2007 15:38
looks liek a wine bar at first sight but when you work out that their wine is actually awful you realise it is actually just a drinking hole that people of all ages use to avoid the chav bars in town.

they need to sort out the bar area as people just stand there and block everyone else from getting through.
ploppy - 3 Sep 2006 19:49
Packed out on a bank holiday Sunday evening friendly staff lively atmosphere good selection of beers and lagers.Only complaint, the smoking non smoking segregation appeared to have broken down due to the selfishness of some customers who clearly cannot read!
leggless - 31 May 2006 19:09
This is a very pleasant drinking place..more of a wine bar than a pub. The food is good and imaginative. Atmosphere is friendly and though the clientele is young I have no problem going there. There is a pavement sitting area...lounge area and restaurant area for smokers as well as non smokers. I like it very much especially as I can walk to it from my flat.
