user reviews of the George and Dragon, Burpham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

No Ruddles in evidence when I visited. They had Arundel Gold and Arundel ASB (I think), and one other which might have been Greene King IPA. I tied both Arundel brews and both were very good.
Yes it is a bit more restaurant than pub but the bar area still felt comfortable enough to just drink in while the restaurant area was most definately for dining.
The food was a bit pricey but very good so worth it in my opinion. The staff were friendly and very efficient on what was a completely manic day due to the BMRC Classic Car Show on the neighbouring cricket green.
I'd certainly be happy to go back again.

Bitterly disappointing would be an apt description. As others have said this is really now a restaurant more than a pub; we didn't eat, just popped in for a drink. Only two handpumps in use - serving Specked Hen and Greene King IPA - a rather dull choice; the third pump clip was turned round - but I could see that was Arundel Gold; when I enquired if the Arundel was normally on I was told it was being replaced by Ruddles! So nice to see a local county pub supporting their local breweries and offering a decent choice of ales...... NOT!
Lovely location, but we won't return.

PREEEEE-TENSIOUS. The Pickled Mouse (beer) was rather good but the menu a puzzle. The chicken caesar salad contained NO salad but it did have some white fish. When I questioned this I was told it was a "deconstructed" salad. Rather pricey and not really a pub.

A 'not so well kept secret' sort of place which is a nice walk from Amberley with some good beer to make the walk worthwhile. Remember to carry a spare pair of shoes if you walk there, as they (probably quite rightly) don't like muddy boots in the bar.

This was a lovely pub, and still has real ale But Beware - it's only a restaurant really now with no proper bar seating (see 'we were soon seated' on another comment). I had walked from Arundel and was looking forward to a good pint - had to sit outside. Another good one 'Gastro'd to death'

Drove along a wintry road through gorgeous countryside and then curled up near a lovely log fire here. The place was amazingly welcoming and twinkling lights made it feel very Christmassy. The food was exceptional as always and the service personable and courteous. the owners let me try a "hot off the stove" piece of their traditional Christmas pudding, which tasted wonderful (and Im not a lover of christmas pudding normally). I have never had anything but a wonderful dining experience here all round. Don't be put off by the snow - its a magical place in the winter!

Never been here before, really warm welcome and pub was very busy. Landlady/manager seemed very friendly if not slightly fake and seated us as soon as possible. Beer limited but in good nick.Had a meal and food was excellent but service was very very poor, asked twice for mayonnaise with my chips which never came and ordered a round of drinks at start of meal which arrived when we had finished. Okay beer, good food but poor service for prices.

Our arrival at 5.45pm last Saturday evening was greeted by the owner shouting out the window announcing that the pub would be opening at 6pm. Noting by 6.15pm that we weren't being served at the tables outside, we decided to place our food orders at the bar only to be told in the rudest tone that the kitchen was closed until 6.30pm and then and only then would the order be taken. Are walkers not welcome on a sunny evening for some reason? Time Out are re-considering whether to continue to mention this pub in their walking guide, so management take note and practice good manners on those who appear with maps and rucksacks-we're mostly professionals you know!

Don't be fooled into expecting the ye olde 17th century English inn that the sign in Arundel suggests. A nice looking traditional exterior leads into a modernised restaurant, with a posh bit and a less posh bit. Lady running the place, whilst friendly to us (maybe a little over friendly), made us feel a bit uncomfortable with her condescending manner towards her staff. Good menu and enjoyed food, but don't expect pie and chips. My girlfriend had to send mussels back as most of them weren't cooked though. In their defence, they readily accepted this and didn't charge for them when they were brought back. Possibly OK if you want a meal out, but not if you want a village pub. Shame really, as is lovely village and deserves one. Girlfriend off work, sick, for 2 days after visit

A very attractive pub with a varied menu. Went for the Times 2 for 1 offer & pleased to see that the dishes were from the lunch menu & not inferior replacements. The only disappointment was that we were refused 2 for 1 on the dessert menu, even though it was clearly stated in the offer.

Rude and unhelpful staff at an overpriced and well out the way pub! Lots of my nicer places to go in Arundel, go there instead!‎

I was invited to the George and Dragon pub when they had their 70's night. The hosts were wonderful. The atmosphere in the pub was great, good entertainment and the pub was packed.

The resturant area has a lovely warm, romantic yet elegant feel about it. The food was superb. Everything is homemade, plus they suppor their local Arundel brewery, which is all good news. This pub is set in beautiful surroundings, definitely worth taking a walk or cycle around after a lovely meal.

Spent a fantastic 70's evening in this pub a couple of weeks ago. What a terrific atmosphere! The staff and management were very attentive and friendly. The food was superb. Four of us went and none of us could fault it. The menu was based on seventies food with a modern twist. My duck just melted in the mouth. We all really enjoyed everything that was put in front of us. Well done to the Chef and his team. We will most certainly go back. I would love to see it in the daylight!!! You deserve to go far.

I drove from portsmouth with 5 friends for lunch here and we left 2 hours later after a stunning afternoon of great food and service. They even made a dessert we had seen on the website that wasnt currently on the menu for us because it looked so gorgeous. We had the mezze platter with warm chorizo to start and it was yummy. Then we had the homemade burgers, fish and chips, risotto (absolutely delicious) and other dishes followed by 3 puddings we shared. My friend worked her way through all the Sussex ales on offer and sadi they were all great... couldnt fault the welcome, the service, the lovely log fires which made it so homely. We rolled out satiated and smiling. Highly recommended and a gorgeous drive in the country too!

My visit to the George and Dragon in Burpham really deserves a mention!
The setting next door to the church in this lovely village of West Sussex is really stunning and the interior of this Gastro /pub does not disappoint.

I found the welcome to be very friendly and sincere. The staff really care!
The menu was interesting with old favourites and modern twists on traditional recipes.

My lunch was excellent and it was obvious that people come here for the really good food and very civilised atmosphere. The decor is calm and muted with the addition of some great log fires to add a feeling of warmth and well being.

My advice to anyone is -go to Burpham, walk around this pretty village and eat at the George and Dragon. All three are superb!

Went to the George & dragon Inn, Burpham Today what a great pub, very friendly smiling waitress serving us. Harriot. I had fish & chips great.... my friendly had different choices, same from the specials board and some from the la a carte menu. Bar man very friendly and helpful with the beers, they support Arundel brewery and my husband had pickled mouse. very great and well kept beer. Very busy, but a hear they are busier in the summer months. Lovely log fires and they have just built a snug area, we sat there and could see the whole of the pub. Met the land ladies baby. Jack... Very nice couple and a great pub lovely desserts everything homemade enough the coffee biscuits.

Went for a lovley walk after lunch to work it off.....

Great location - great premises. We visited as a family group this weekend having heard of a change of hands and hoping the service had improved since our last visit (2 years ago).

As this is primiarily a beer site - I should first say the beer was OK. Nothing more than that.

The only reason to go this far would be for the food - and other reviewers have suprised me with their gushing reviews of perfrect service.

For us, it all started well, greeted at the door and shown to our table. Then it went down hill. The staff seemed to forget we were there, with us having to seek them out to complete a drinks order, take a food order etc. Some of the food was great, but the lamb was really tough (the staff were very quick to apologise and removed the charge from the bill - but it kind of spoilt the meal for those who had the lamb). The waitress serving the desert started to take an order from another table whilst half way through bringing our food - leaving half of us, spoons poised, waiting to tuck in! The crumble was delicious though.

I got the feeling that you recieved priority service if you were 'local people' - with two similar sized tables arriving after us, having two courses, paying and leaving before we'd recieved our deserts.

London prices are one thing and OK if you get quality and service to match. This was sadly not our experience this time - and as this was a second attempt we won't be making the trip again.

This pub benefits from an idyllic setting, but many pubs in these positions become complacent - not this one. Inside the staff are alert and friendly - we were greeted as soon as we opened the door! The restaurant area boasts starched white linen with an informal atmosphere and the food is superb. Dog friendly bar - where meals can be taken - and water is always available outside. Far superior to the Black Rabbit on the other side of the River Arun.

We had lunch there today and i must say it was lovely. Roast lamb and goosefat crispy potatoes. The service was excellent and the tables were laid properly. We were so impressed that we have booked for mothers day.

I was looking for a pub in the Arundel area for lunch and when I asked friends, ALL of them recommended this one very highly. I went there on a Wednesday for lunch with 5 other people. We booked a table and they were very helpful by setting up a special chair for a friend who has a bad back.

It is down a long country road with beautiful scenery.

The service was excellent! She was a new waitress who smiled from ear to ear and was great at her job.

We each had different meals and it was unanimous...every one of us was bowled over by our food! Even the vegetables were perfectly done to everyone's liking; not too under or over-cooked.

The only downside is that it is on the expensive side, so next time I think 2 courses will be fine:-)
