user reviews of the Mill Hotel, Chester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Mill is still an excellent place to have a drink in Chester and is not too far from the station. Ales on Saturday evening were Coachhouse Mill Premium, Weetwood Best, Titanic Iceberg, Elland Edenish & 1872 Porter, Deeply Vale DV8 & Deeply Red, Phoenix White Monk & Thornbridge Jaipur. The cider was Millwhites Rum Cask. I opted for the DV8 and the 1872 Porter. The latter is a lovely beer, if not a little strong.

Just returned from a superb weekend at the Mill Hotel. My wife and I have been here many times before and have never been disappointed. On 31/1/14 I had a few pints of Ursa Major from the Beartown Brewery. This was superb. On the following day I sampled White Monk from the Phoenix brewery and found this to be equally as good. The bar food and restaurant meals were also excellent during our stay and this was topped off with excellent service from the friendly staff. Highly recommended !

It's still a close call between the Mill and the Brewery Tap for Chester's best pub in my opinion. The Brewery Tap wins it purely on atmosphere, as the Mill feels exactly like a hotel bar, which of course it is! Nevertheless it still has a great range - Old Maria Black Maria, Weetwood Best, Thornbridge Jaipur, Phoenix Corn Mill, Salopian Oracle, Coach House Mill Premium & Gunpowder Strong Mild & McMullen AK. Ciders were both excellent - Abrahalls Thundering Molly & Thistly Cross Ginger. Still a worthy stop on any Chester crawl.

Excellent selection of ales. Stayed in the Mill Hotel for a week on business and to have a real ale bar on site was an unexpected bonus! Bar is open to the public. I tried the Weetwood Bitter which was average, preferred their Cheshire Cat ale that I sampled elsewhere in the city. The bar is lively with mix of locals and hotel residents with a friendly and efficient bar service.

superb hotel bar with nine different ales on over fourteen handpumps!my pint of Derby"dancing in the moonlight" was lovely(3.05)most ales though were priced between 2.40 and 3) service was good and friendly admittedly till receipts on pints of ale do get my goat! The other thing one noticed was me being at the young "spritely"age of 31 i did appear to be around half the age of the other clientele, still great pub slash hotel bar ,8/10

One of the best hotel bars I've ever been in.

An absolutely superb hotel bar which is attended to by efficient, friendly staff. Always has several ales on tap , and as other reviewers have said, the prices are very reasonable for a hotel. The food is very good and the bar meals are well priced. Lots of screens for sport but the volume isnt loud so you can chat easily. My only niggle is that it is pretty difficult to get somewhere to sit at weekend evenings but this is obviously a good sign . Strangely enough, the smoking area is the most picturesque part ! Chester centre is a 5 min walk along the canal -or 25 mins on the way back !

Popped in here from the railway station having got tired of forever queueing and the poor service in Harkers.

Now have a new better place to visit, staff attentive, food choice good, bit of a wine bar feel to it.

Good range of ales, 6 or so pumps.

Has a house ale.

As it says on the tin, a hotel bar. Wish all hotel bars were like this. Great choice of ales and if you can grab a seat by the waterway it's a great place to enjoy a few hours.

In here on 22 January. Many ales including Phoenix, Weetwoood, Copper Dragon, Coach House, Harviestoun and Elland. Real cider and perry. Sky Sports. Nice pub.
GuideDogSaint - 10 Mar 2011 22:55
Quite a few beers but the service wasn't great.
CanalWalker - 11 Jul 2010 09:39
Huge selection of beers, well kept and well priced - particularly for a hotel - e.g pint of Weetwood for 1.95 (thought that was a mistake until the second pint at the same price).

Always call in to this pub as it does have a large selection of ales. We managed to find a table despite it being busy with the Rugby International being screened. There was no problem with either of the beers we tried before moving on.

Sadly, not as good as it used to be. Had a few mediocre and a couple of bad pints recently which never used to happen before.

Stayed two nights. Full of business men/women. The vibe of the room is definitely a hotel bar and not a snug pub. The selections were many but only the "head" publican could comment on quality or taste of the cask ales. The jazz bands at night are a nice touch tho!

A posh hotel with an excellent selection of real ales - 13 in total. Abbeydale Matins, Oakham Inferno, Beartown Polar Eclipse, Northumberland Brown Ale, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Phoenix Cornmill Bitter, Everards Sunchaser, Beartown Simba, RCH East Street, Durham White Amarillo, Durham Black Velvet, Fernandes Malt Shovel Mild and the house beer Coach House Mill Premium Bitter were all available. I opted for the Hecks Farmhouse Cider! We sat outside on a narrow bench seating area overlooking the canal. This also doubles as the smoking area. Inside was fairly busy with no tables available and football showing on the TV screens, which was not too obtrusive. Service was the only real letdown. I got the feeling that all of the barmen/barmaids were young college students on the minimum wage. They didn't seem to have too much knowledge of what they were selling and a smile would have been nice! Car parking is also a problem. There is a couple of car parking areas belonging to the hotel. But they were all full. Despite this, the Mill had the best range of beers (and cider) we discovered in Cheshire this weekend and I'd gladly return.

If the manager does not get a grip soon, this great bar will go down the nick. The mirrors behind the bar have not been cleaned in years and look tatty. (This is not the 70s !!) Also, they do not serve chips befor 6pm. This is a hotel for gods sake,
grizzlygus - 23 Feb 2009 15:27
Great range of beers but is definitely a hotel bar rather than a pub. Still call in whenever I'm in Chester though as the beer has always been in good nick.
ROBCamra - 3 Dec 2008 15:16
Sadly not what it was, although beer range is still exceptional. Harkers down the canal has more and better choice these days.
ChrissG - 6 Sep 2008 23:32
I enjoyed a visit to this pub in 2004 and was looking forward to visiting again this year. We enjoyed the choice of ales and had no problem with the television screens as they were not loud. It was busy but we had no problem with the service. Lovely outside area by the canal.

Smokey & characterless

up it arse abit, but this is Chester.
tintin2000 - 29 Dec 2006 17:29
I agree with Chesterman - I've had enough of wall-to-wall Sky rubbish. Just switch on for the big events or when the customers request the TV, but to have 3 screens on all thje time, in one room - there's no escape!!!!!!!!!
Argghh!!
Pity because the beer range is the best for miles around. I still go in there but not as much as I used to.
electrophotic - 19 Sep 2006 18:47
I think that the 3 big screen TV's now spoil it,by all means have them on for something important - but not all the time. I go out to get away from the telly, but these things are always hitting me in the eye with Sky rubbish. Yes the beer is good and there is a great selection so I still go there.
Chesterman - 4 Sep 2006 19:33
Absolutely huge range of beers. Not an amazing character...
bensonby - 5 Mar 2006 18:07
One of the best ale houses in the country
Uncle_Dunkel - 27 Feb 2006 01:26
Food is excellent and no complaints about the beer. Not a particularly atmospheric pub though and does show footy and big screens.
RollerRuss - 20 Feb 2006 13:04
Never had a bad pint here. Always an interesting range of beers on.

Whatch out thought it can be extremely busy on a Saturday.
blitzy - 31 Jan 2006 01:22
There's plenty of good beer in Chester, and you don't need to move far from the Mill to find more of it. That said, this place has one of the most impressive selections of real ale in great nick that you'll find anywhere. There's a suspicion you have to be seven feet tall to work here, but staff are very on-the-ball. I was slightly disappointed with the food, but that may have been a one-off.
joegreen - 8 Nov 2005 13:25
yeah this is a great pub - fantastic selection of real ale - which changes daily it seems - food great to. however when are they going to get some german and belgium beer in bottles or preferably on draft - it can be done lads. having said that this is a beer oasis in the beer desert which is chester
fivebaby - 28 Oct 2005 18:27
One of the few hotel bars that feels like a pub. Great atmospere, excellent staff and plenty of them.
Most important they serve an ever changing 15 real ales including a mild and draught cider. Its like a mini beer festival everyday. handy for the station too. good reasonable grub.
billy_squibble - 18 Oct 2005 22:39
This is one of those Desert Island Pubs that should, and most definitely is in this case, cherished by Cestrian regulars, real ale tourists, foreign visitors, etc, etc.

The term Real Ale Mecca is not superlative enough for this converted warehouse/mill!

An absolutely superb range of 15 ales AND a real cider are always served AND they do great, big-portioned bar food AND they have have a top quality Italian restaurant AND they have a plasma screen (which is big but the sound doesn't blast out) AND they have enough proper barstaff on duty AND they offer fairly priced top quality hotel rooms AND it is pleasantly located next to the canal AND is reasonably priced for Chester.

I would like to give this 11 out of 10 if I could (this would be 12 if it was nearer to where I live!!!!)

GET YOURSELVES DOWN THERE!!.
