user reviews of the Crown Inn, Lewes

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This former historic and prestigious hotel and pub remains closed.

It's quickly falling into serious disrepair - and becoming an eyesore in Lewes town centre.

Probably unlikely to reopen - in any of its previous uses.

Closed - notwithstanding it's prime central location. Looks very run down.

What a dive. Really dirty. Full of muppets. Beer tasted like vinegar. Shame because it's a lovely old building.

What I like about this pub is the simple fact it keeps all the useless shits in one place leaving the decent pubs in the area scum free. Clearly you can read and are educated so believe the reviews and go to any other pub in the area other than this.

I was enticed in by the sign outside saying 'try one of our handmade pies'. God it was awful. Microwaved to death with a dry plate of chips and peas, served by a chav in a shell suit.

It's a shame really as the pub does have atmosphere and could be a very good town centre local. The beer was good but avoid the food if you don't want to feel very sick afterwards.

I know it was bonfire ~ but 4.50 for a beer clearly exploited the situation and you got very little for it. If you were trying to make the business fail then you are right on target. Oh, and a tip for the owner; shut the pub kitchen door. People might see how awful it is. Epic awful, I'd say.

This fine building houses a truly awful pub where, it seems, every Lewes chav hangs out. Bad language and behaviour are the norm and there seems to be no management whatsoever.

I couldn't disagree more with the critic who claimed not to have seen worse toilets since visiting "Hungry" on his holidays. They are by far the best part of this place being classic Victorian tiled basement bogs. Yes they could do with some cleaning and titivation, but not half as much as the staff and customers who scream chav and serve/drink badly kept beer and pints of wife-beater. A shame because the building has some nice features and could be great - but avoid like the plague for the moment.

I had high hopes of this place but was sorely disappointed. Frequented by the local low life and monosyllabic plebs. I heard the F word used rather liberally which really put me off. Barman addressed me as "fella" which I greatly resent. The place just shouts of chav. Avoid.

Service was a bit hit and miss but the lounge area was quite pleasant. The food was edible but you get what you pay for and the wine was passable. This pub is really for the locals and I hate to think what the rooms are like upstairs - if you're a tourist head elsewhere.

Used to be a 'not bad' place to drink and it has to be said that the staff are uniformly friendly and efficient. However - it now seems to habituated by those whose I.Q. only marginally exceeds their shoe size! This pub used to have available, most of the daily papers - this seems no longer to be the case, which I can only attribute to the present clientele's inability to read.

It is an hotel also, but I shudder to think what you would make of it as a guest, should you manifest yourself in the bar when the protosimians are in!

Avoid (unless you wish to be sworn at because you wear a hat!!!)

Just Harveys Best on one (of two) handpumps on Sat but good condition, and a comfortable wood panelled lounge area to sit down & drink it.

I'm not sure I'd describe this as a "cracking boozer", it's more a hotel bar than a pub. That said, it serves a good pint of Harvey's Best, so it's worth popping in if you're nearby.

Cracking boozer. Old wood panelled, log fire in winter.
Good hotel above. Great base for shopping.
