Its an ok pub since the makeover (it wasn't that great before it), and the ales were well kept. Have had a burger here both times I visited, and both times the very thick home made patties were raw inside, apparently on purpose we were informed, so wont be having those again. It has a nice veranda seating area outside, and it s quiet street - so that's nice.

Finally got the chance to give this place a proper try and wasn't disappointed. Booked in for Sunday lunch - the usual fairly extensive menu is replaced by some superb roasts with all the trimmings. Beer on this occassion was either No1 or Kings, the former slid down a treat. Service was prompt, friendly and efficient and the surroundings light, airy and welcoming. Altogether a great experience which I certainly intend to repeat.

Went in here for the first time in ages recently and it has had the trendy street corner pub makeover which has worked very well here. The atmosphere was very convivial, the bar staff attentive - it was clean. Would welcome this as a local if I lived there and will certainly pop in again when I'm in the area.

Wow, I'm amazed that this place hasn't had got anything on here more recent that last year. This is a great pub, I've been going to it since it changed hands. The bar staff are always friendly and welcoming, good range of beers and the sausage and mash selection is the best I've seen. Go and visit, you won't be disappointed.

Haven't been in since it was the Rutland but certainly intend to go again. The Sussex Giant was a treat although a couple of degrees colder would have made it perfect. Didn't eat but the Sunday roasts looked pretty good. Wondered why they chose the name until we realised it is actually on the corner of Coleridge Street - get it. All right please yourselves.

Visited today and was pleased to see two Darkstar beers on tap as guest ales (Hophead and Festival). The first decent ales I have seen in this pub and such practice could make the place great. Interesting to see what they plump for for as the next guest (please no more Red River!). Now summer is on the horizon, sitting outside with a great pint would make the Mariner really special, however inside remains dominated by loud music in the evening, and a couple of chunky sofas which take up a lot of space mean that tables and chairs are in short supply at busy times.

Food is still good, however the menu remains pretty much unchanged and specials lack creativity.

Most of the staff are friendly, but the music can sometimes be a bit loud. The menu has been expanded from just sausages and mash of late which good. Ample of outside space. Also child friendly.

Although it may only be bangers and mash/burgers the food is consistantly good. All the female staff are really helpful/cheerful/lovely people but the male owner/barman - is the grumpiest, most miserable landlord I've ever come across. In fact it's become a source of amusement to my drinking pals just to see how moody he is when we frequent there. I don't think we've ever seen him smile!

Update- the food on offer has certainly improved- the menu has been slightly expanded and the daily specials are usually quite interesting. The Bombadier has been well kept of late, and the excellent outdoor seating available continues to provide a smokers haven in the face of the July 1st regulations.

Clearly maiking some effort to put up a fight in the Westbourne/Forager/Mariner Hove battle of the pubs.

There is still room for improvement in the form of decent music, better food, and a reasonable range of well kept real ale.

Has recently changed hands- the food menu has now been reduced to burgers and bangers and mash with a few daily 'specials'. Also have been subjected to some shocking music played at at an offensively loud volume- does anyone who visits this pub really want that?

I think they've taken their eye of the ball and newcomers in the locality are making more of an effort to create a decent atmoshphere and serve high quality food and beer, although given the location of the pub and all the outdoor seating I doubt they will struggle for business, especially with summer and the smoking ban on the way.

10 times better looking than when it was my local, the Rutland. Let down by incredibly rude staff who can bearly tear themselves away from their friends to serve you and then go back to them so quickly that they forget to give you change (twice) and put it into a glass behind the bar! Quite unbeleivable. And this has happened more than once.

Nice pub- much better than the other locals nearby. I have always found the staff very friendly. Does suffer from a lack of decent beer, usually bombardier and an IPA or speckled hen- How about some Tim Taylors please! Often the beer does not taste too fresh. Food is of a pretty good standard, although the menu isnt too imaginative and rarley changes. Sunday roasts are pretty poor. Lots of outdoor seating for the summer, and there is usually a good atmosphere to the place. Overall, the beer and food isn't perfect, but this pub is still light years ahead of all the local competition.

Nice airy and clean pub with good mix of people. Staff can be a bit rude and dismissive though.

Good pub, good food, good service and the locals all seem friendly. I had a spicy chicken salad there sometime ago which was delicious, the only criticism at our table was that the portions were too big (eh?!?). Very nice, I could take my mother and kids there for a civilised evening just as easily as a more relaxed evening with a few mates and a load of booze.

Great open, airy, comfortable pub with great locals!

Most were slightly wary when the Rutland was closed, refurbished, and re-opened at The Mariner but i have to say myself, and many others have been won over. This pub is welcoming and caters for all sorts of clientele!

Have fun

Light and airy pub that does good lunches and food. Popular with families with young kids during the daytime as it has a section that is no smoking until 7 (or maybe 9) pm and also an outside space. Definately a good pub for weekend daytime drinks.

Refurbed and renamed "The Ancient Mariner". Haven't tried it since the change. Used to be a reasonable local boozer.
