Twickenham Tup, Twickenham

user reviews of the Twickenham Tup, Twickenham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After a visit to the Twickenham Club (not listed on BITE), my next stop was this Greene King pub, which is now called the Royal Oak. If you're thinking of coming here, don't! Greene King IPA was the solitary real ale. You get a 10% discount, if you're a CAMRA member. But £2.75 for a half of Greene King with a discount seemed very steep to me. That would make it £6.10 a pint. On querying it, the barmaid double checked and confirmed £2.75 was the correct amount. Although, she did state that Twickenham is quite an expensive place to drink! Given I'd paid £1.90 for a half in my previous establishment, this seemed hard to believe. My suspicion was that she pressed the Punk IPA button on the till. But either way, this is to be avoided due to exorbitant prices or incompetent bar staff.

Now called Stokes & Moncreiff
bjbrummiejohn - 30 May 2014 09:15
No its not, the name has changed again...
Wonder how long it will remain under the new mantle..
I'm not going to tell you what it is it called now as I am running an experiment to see how many different places this professional web site will actually register against the TW1 3AB post code before realising they are all the same place..

Yes now called The Royal Oak.
In here last Saturday afternoon and not very impressed.
This is the first time I have been here for ages and I won’t be coming back any time soon.
Only two other punters present.
There are 4 hand pulls split 2/2 at each end of the bar.
2 for London Pride and 1 for Doom Bar with 1 not in use (Twickenham Naked Ladies clip turned round)
I tried a pint of the Doom Bar which went flat within seconds of being served and cost £3.65.

This is now the 'Royal Oak' pub. :o)
TeeJay - 19 Mar 2013 19:07
No longer the Twickenham Tup. :o)

WTF is this pub all about 17.95 for a Veal T Bone with fondant potatoes, when its dead as fook on a friday night, oh maybe thats why.

This large pub is fantastic on match days at Twickenham because for some reason it doesnt get too full, probably because it isnt in the centre of town.

It is a grand sized building with a huge bar, fast and efficient staff, good food and a great burger if just want a snack.

However, like most Twickenham pubs on match day it is ridiculously expensive. At 4.50 for a pint you can understand why so many fans congregate outside the off licences, especially if its a sunny day. I have been here 4 times now and have always had a good experience, the only blip being a pint of Leffe that was off.

JonnyConsumer - 28 May 2012 11:40
Gastro pub but a nice one. No longer the Twickenham Tup but back to the old name of The Royal Oak. Not normally my type of pub but have a pleasent night there last week. The food is simple but very well cooked. Dont expect anything like it has been in the past, much more up market now and the prices reflect that. Rugby days? Havent been in but heard that is a good crack. Would visit again.
the_light_knight - 19 Nov 2010 14:25
This pub has now been tarted up, renamed the Royal Oak (its original name) and had its personality surgically removed. Went in last night and was charged 5.50 for a pint and a half of Twickenham Naked Ladies. 5.50! And there was deafening music. About an hour beforehand I'd been in the Antelope in swanky Eaton Terrace and was charged 3.50 for a pint of strong beer and 3.25 for a pint of London Pride. If a Belgravia pub can charge that for a pint, why can't an ordinary suburban local like the Royal Oak?
Moderate_Nige - 14 Nov 2010 22:56
the pub critic you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. the music license has not been pulled at all. they still have live music on a friday saturday and sunday night. the staff are all amazing and so friendly and the reason it looks like it is only their friends holding the place together would be because the staff are so friendly everyone who drinks in there is made to feel like there friends and everyone gets on. and yea the drinks are cheap but they are not as bad as you say in the slightest. and the way the pub it is attracts the people they obviously want there which looks like its not you,
howitis - 12 Jul 2010 22:32
have not been in for a while, good ale, service and staff a lot better than last visit, will be back again.
sportsfred - 7 Jul 2010 13:26
The self-appointed pubcritic (17 Apr 2010) obviously isn't a beer drinker or, if he is, has no discernment. My partner and I were in here the other night and drank the Twickenham Sundancer and Naked Ladies, both very good, tasty, locally brewed beers, now widely available in Twickenham and beyond, and hardly "random and crappy beers". They were both fresh and well-kept and always have been when we've drunk here.
I don't know what to make of his bizarre assertion that the staff were "dirty". A couple of days' stubble doesn't make someone dirty. Perhaps it was a typo for "young and friendly".
Moderate_Nige - 4 Jul 2010 00:44
Visited this establishment just recently, two meals for 10.00 quite good, had cottage pie with side salad,my wife the cottage pie with chips,The beer Naked Ladies was very drinkable 2 .60. good ror the area worth a visit .
retiree - 17 Jun 2010 18:39
Now The Red Lion and supposedly a live music venue this place sux big time, a muddled mixture of fruit machines, out of place tv screens, a makeshift stage and the dirtiest looking staff ive seen outside of Camden. The clientele of bikers, over the hill rockers, skint meloncholy emo-ish under 21's and what seems to be the staff's friends and family (children included) seem to be holding onto a reputation that was never really that good to start with but somehow still seems cool to these people. The drinks are so cheap but that doesnt mean they're any good, cheapest nastiest wine in Twickers and randon crappy beers that obviously no one else in Twickers is embaressed enough to stock, cheap drinks does equal good pub and with their music license recently pulled im not really sure if anything what would attract anyone to this pub? Oh and if you need to use the toilets HOLD IT trust me you've never seen anything like them before and will never want to again!
thepubcritic - 17 Apr 2010 22:00
I come in here for a drink or two every now and again. I'm no sports fan but I like the atmosphere, I've always found the staff friendly and the music is more interesting than many places. Never tried the food but the Twickenham Ale is always well kept and tasty (and exceptionally cheap which is a bonus).
Moderate_Nige - 3 Mar 2010 21:36
Went back to the Tup as usual for the rugby and yet again new managers. No where near as hospitable as the two gents previously. Very dissapointed, food was average and service was slow and rude. Will not be back...
ab1000 - 18 Sep 2009 12:08
Always go to the TUP to watch the rugby and football, glad to see all the screens and tv,s are back. Yet again under new ownership.....Great to see 5 real ales on... landlord, bombardier, pride, spitfire and ipa. Good to see people making the effort with real ales.Definately be back, great pint...
ab1000 - 3 Aug 2009 15:15
went to the tup for sunday roast and the food was great. Probably the best pint of timothy taylor i have had in a long time.

Have been going to pubs in Twickenham for years, and to the Tup to watch sport and always thought it was by far the best place locally to watch sport.

Went in yesterday to watch the cricket, ordered a spitfire and an IPA (both of which were terrible) and a coke and a soda water (both of which were flat). All of the other bitters were off, and the chap next to me at the bar ordered 2 Fosters only to be told the Fosters was off too! Tried to order some chips but was told they were not serving food (even though the blackboard states food served 12-9 on saturdays.

Terrible experience and a real let down. Would not go back
ads100 - 19 Jul 2009 16:05
Went in for the lions match, the big screen is back and must be the biggest in Twickenham, along with 4 plasmas. Great atmoshere and the new managers and staff were really hospitable. Jolly good show chaps.....
sportsfred - 7 Jul 2009 19:31
Just got back from an awesome night out. Heard about the tup through friends and thought i would check it out. Amazing atmosphere with really friendly and chatty staff. We got up on the bar and danced- it was one big party. Great live music too- will be coming back soon for sure. One of the liveliest boozers in Twickenham!
Christ_on_a_Bike - 24 May 2009 01:36
In here to watch the Premiership Final on Sat and the first thing the new owners have done is to take away the 2 big screens! Lost count of the number of people who walked in, looked at the 2 big empty spaces at each end and looked puzzled- they were it's bread and butter! A few new plasmas dotted about but nothing to replace the projectors. All this 2 weeks before the Lions tour- awesome timing....
st_beer - 18 May 2009 22:21
Yes, just a quick addition to the previous review, the manager is a bit of lady's man. And I do say that disparagingly, because I feel that men like himself have chosen there profession based on how likely their future work is to bring them in to contact with affected young female students.

I too have stood at the Tup's bar unserved, watching his charm simultaneously charm barstaff and react unhospitably to customers. Knowing now that he is also capable of racist outbursts I think I shall give the Tup a miss in future. I am sure he is currently standing in his bathroom, singing Robbie Williams' 'Millenium' into a hairbrush but if you're a friend of his, would you take him to one side and tell him that his customers think his parents did a thoroughlly bad job bringing him up?
anonymous - 5 May 2009 10:01
How this place has a rating of 6.5/10 on the 5th April 2009 is anyones guess.

My friends and I have been drinking at the pubs in and around Twickenham for years and decided to try the Tup one more time on Friday 27th March.

What a dissapointment...

The place was near empty, the tables were dirty, the two girls 'working' behind the bar were more interested in being chatted up by the manager than serving beer. When we asked the manager if we could be served he said 'I own this place, I'm the manager, I'll do what I want'. When he eventually came and served us (the girls just stood about talking) he said 'You aussies should know better than to hurry me up' What is that guy on??? Needless to say we didn't stay. We carried on and spent a small fortune in other Twickenham pubs and the Tup won't be getting any of our money in the future.

If you're ever tempted to try the Tup - DON'T! Keep walking and find somewhere better. There are a couple more pubs just down the road, a couple by the river and more in Twickenham itself. The sooner the Tup management changes and they revamp the place, the better.

For the record we were mainly English but had a South African and a New Zealander with us. But regardless if we were 'Aussies' what the heck is that guy on???
rellery - 5 Apr 2009 12:32
Big rugby pub with flags and plasma screens and a good selection of beers. Rugger buggers and off street locale keep the oik quotient low. Very decent selection of Twickenham Brewery's finest - popped in for one and went through several Naked Ladies. A nice surprise.
BananaSundae - 13 Dec 2008 17:35
Decent boozer, just set slightly off the high street which is probably a rather shrewd move - dont just get any little oik turn up. Quite expensive, but generally nice atmosphere and decent place to have a few beers.
whoagigi - 4 Oct 2008 16:29
The BEST roast in town. If there are three or more of you in your party, they even bring it over on a platter and let you carve it yourself! That means you get more of your fair share of veg and roast potatotes...lovely says your mum!
JAMESRWM - 24 Feb 2008 11:33
Interesting pub. 360 degree, walk-around bar (unusual these days). V young staff. Not many chairs on a rugby day though. If you don't like rugby, you must be that chap from Sixth Sense...aimlessly going from meeting to appointment, not knowing you're actually dead..!! One day you'll find out..that they actually play rugby in heaven...and if you don't join in, they'll make you one of the posts! Or if you're really bad, they'll make you the ball..!! Boomph..!! ooohh-aaahh..!!
TeeJay - 13 Dec 2007 01:51
My friend & I decided to try Sunday lunch here cos the Clubhouse was full and were glad we did. My friend is vegetarian but the only veggie option on the menu was vegetable soup! Agreeing the menu was not exactly veggie-friendly, they offered to cook her something else and served up a hearty and delicious veggie meal. Roast lamb was good too and the service really was second to none.

We went back a couple of Sundays ago and found the Sunday menu to now have much better veggie options, so they kept their word too. Its also always easy to get served in here, even after a rugby match when you can barely get through the door. Hats off to the staff, its a vast improvement on recent years, they certainly seem to have figured out how to recruit people who make coming into this pub a pleasant experience again.

I watched the 3rd 4th place rugby world cup play off in here last Friday after attending the Twickenham Beer Festival. I wasnt overly impressed, but it probably didnt help that I had my jacket half inched from the back of my chair whilst I was playing pool.

The night did get better as more people started to turn up and more points went against the French, but Id probably try a different pub if I was in Twickenham again.
Strongers - 25 Oct 2007 07:38
The rugby atmosphere in the 'Tup' has to be experienced to be believed. Go there on a rugby day (if you love rugby) and you'll be 'swinging low' before your first pint even..!! Watch England win the RWorld Cup here this Saturday! Bring your singing voice and your rugby mates and you won't want to leave...!! A great English rugby football hostelry.
England for the RWC'07!ok TJ
TeeJay - 16 Oct 2007 22:54
Has to be one of the worst pubs I have been to in a long time! The Twickenham Tup really is going downhill and tonight was a prime example of that. The atmosphere was poor and the place has lost that great feel it used to have. This boozer isn't the same as 10 years ago, if 5 years! What has happened guys? Sort it out
anonymous - 25 Nov 2006 00:58
One of the best pubs in Twickenham, always some top class barstaff to sell you thaqt beer whilst looking better than my ex ever would. Cheers a man right up.
anonymous - 3 Nov 2006 01:05
Have had many a Drunken night in here, met friends and made new ones, wish I was there when he felt ten years old at 27, as I have ten on him i must have been chatting to much !

slops - 18 Oct 2006 09:59
Dreadfull set up for live bands. Too much vomit etc in the toilets. Nice manager though and looks like a nice pub....just isnt though! If youre looking for live music especially on the weekend, there are better places down the road but if your looking for a regular rugby loving pub to have a pint and a chat, it ok.
anonymous - 27 Sep 2006 19:34
We gigged here on the 25th August, and found it hard using the venue P.A system. I really couldn't get into it as I couldn't here myself and my equipment. Simon, the manager, is a great guy and tries to help the musicians as much as possible, but he's got issues with the neighbours which restrict the noise. A solution is very much needed to the sound system in this pub. The crowd were the best. What a great audience, they sang along to every song and were really appreciative towards the sound problems on the night . . bless them. I would love to make this a regular gig, but until the P.A is sorted I will wait in hope that it's rectified as I feel the audience are cheated if the musician cannot get a good vibe from a more workable system.
This is a great venue and worth a consideration for a good night out.
scratch - 28 Aug 2006 19:45
Couple of friends took me here the other week. Nothing wrong with this place but at 27 why do I feel I'm 10 years too old! Does exactly what it says on the tin
KatrinaD - 22 Aug 2006 10:48
Like this pub for the live music and Tequila Rose. Pleasant customers and decent bar staff always worth a visit on the way into Twickenham.
bestbarmaid - 26 Jul 2006 21:59
Went here on Friday with friends to mainly check out the live music. Stayed for a song and left. Two guys playing,
nothing to write home about, but a lot better then the music at the up and under and the bar next to it . . .
anonymous - 3 Jun 2006 16:06
Best pub in Twickenham if you want fun, good music, great food, a great selection of beer and friendly staff who always want to chat (No moody faces here). Believe you me having drunk there for many years and experiencing many staff and managers (and I used to work there), you won't get better if its community and sports adicts you want. Well done Simon and the team - keep it up we love you. (and the beer lines are great now proving you listen to your punters). Whenever I am back 'home' I'll be visiting and dancing on the bar again.
Mad_Moo - 2 May 2006 19:29
tall barman summed up the friendliness of this pub, now he's gone so has the friendliness. much of a muchness. same routine:
normal day - turn on the tele on.
rugby day - black out the windows, pack everyone in like sardines, overwork the staff, blow bbq smoke into the building, pay music deafeningly.
anonymous - 28 Mar 2006 20:09
Always managed to avoid watching rugby in here, but tried it the other day. It was OK, certainly well organised with some TV's labelled "Rugby" and others "football". Guinness was nice. Too full of poncy types smoking themselves to death though - Women on the look out for Rugby blokes to pull who natter all the way through the rugby, and poncy geezers who want to "do the tup" on a Twickenham rugby day.

Not bad as a last resort to watch the game, but there are better pubs in the area to be honest.
TheGP - 12 Mar 2006 19:03
Pub is generally OK, would go there for a drink during the week. Would never go on a rugby day though, it gets really really busy however my sister used to work here and absolutely loved the atmosphere on rugby days.
XXXXX - 6 Mar 2006 11:23
avoid this place on match days. they move the tables out and you have to be careful that your shoes remain on your feet, the floor is that sticky. however, on other days, particularly at the weekend, this is one of the best pubs in twickenham with good beer (albeit rather pricey) great atmosphere and generally good bands. 8/10.
swatto - 6 Jan 2006 14:55
Average pub. A place to go for one then move on. Ordered a Springbok and got it, in a thimble! Music was quite good.
mad_mullah - 18 Dec 2005 14:24
Oh dear oh dear, the foolish landlord apparently abused the previous late licence powers and with the onset on new licencing laws has now lost said late licence - so it now closes at 11pm. Ooops! Still great after an England rugby game (beware of overly-inflated prices, however) but not worth a visit at any other time, except perhaps to neck a crafty Springbok before moving to Up n Under.
Cleversaz - 1 Dec 2005 01:00
Great atmosphere on match day. Truly awful the rest of the time!
EasterChick - 29 Mar 2005 17:58
WORST PUB IN TWIX.... FULL OF RUGBY YAHS N LITTLE POSH BOYS!
DADDIES LOCK UP YOUR DAUGHTERS... THE RUGBY BRIGADE R ON THEIR WAY
Camrur - 24 Mar 2005 18:26
Not a great pub. Typically noisy and crowded on Fridays & Saturdays. Live music is a nice touch but be prepared for uttely hammered rugby types lurching about and long waits at the bar. A bit lacking in atmosphere the rest of the week.
anonymous - 11 Mar 2005 11:56
The best pub in Twickenham - no contest.
charlie1850 - 26 Feb 2005 13:42
DANGEROUS. No further comment.
Cleversaz - 24 Jan 2005 18:36
in my opinion this pub has gone downhill loads! they changed the menu to some sort of indian take away and the whole place always seems to be full of paryletics pouring beer over themselves and everyone else. live musics ok but too many drunk teenagers every time I have been there!
anonymous - 12 Jan 2005 21:56
Best pub in Twickenham at any time of the week. Great for weekend lash and sing-song. Great for Sunday roast and relaxation. Nice, friendly irish barmaids, big screen, live music at the weekends and one of the few pubs to show non-international rugby... perfick.
TRW - 12 Dec 2004 21:13
It's funny isn't. This pub has NO bouncers, yet it has one of the best atmosphere's in Twickenham, if not THE best. Treat the custmoer with respect, and it will be returned. Heaving on Friday and Saturday nights. The wooden floor can become a lake on particularly crowdy nights, but it's certainly a fun pub to be in. Large bar means service doens't take as long as it should.
Zod - 21 Sep 2004 13:06
OK to watch the Rugby I guess, if you like drinking in a heaving wooden floored mess of a pub, full of antipodeans.
I would go elsewhere if I was you.
TheGP - 9 Aug 2004 16:13
Great place to watch the rugby although too many antipodeans have discovered it for my liking these days. In fact, you'll be lucky to get in on a match day. That's a shame cos the staff are really nice, there's a fantastic atmosphere and it's a great place to meet rugby players! Can't say the beer is much good though; it's the only place I've had stella that tastes weak...
Emma - 29 Jul 2004 16:31
I go there alot, it is a great pub, and no trashy people there.
Loz - 11 May 2004 11:18
The tall barman has a cool haircut and an engaging, pleasant manner. He deserves the barman of the year award (Richmond & Twickenham Times).
Trevor Daly - 15 Apr 2004 21:14
I love the Tup pub, the bar staff are just so friendly, it's a great place to get smashed, the atmosphere is electric - even on a week night!

Claire - 15 Apr 2004 21:05
A fun place to have been during the UK and Australian October 2003 rugby game.

A visitor from New England
Bob Ellis - [email protected] - 20 Jan 2004 01:40
The bar staff are great. Very friendly and very efficient. My personal favouite is the tall one.
anonymous - 7 Jan 2004 13:13
Lousy pub for Rugby, I phoned and confirmed they would be open for Rugby games early, they replied YES. Then the next morning no one was to be seen. Terrible! Absolutely no one and we missed the first half of the game ...... really poor service! and Information
Jason - 4 Nov 2003 18:12
We (Twick rowing crowd and other locals) went through about a two year phase of practically living there. Even had Orphans Dinners there on Christmas Day - this was about 5 years ago. Richard was manager for that time. I dont know how we held down our jobs and the amount of alcohol we consumed. It was great fun though. Us thirty somethings feel a little old now for the Tup but we still have the odd good night there. Mark the manager is a good sort and comes to henley with us each year for our annual eccentric piss up. Staff are great, good looking and friendly.

Niall - 29 Aug 2003 16:42
Great pub to meet tasty rugger buggers.
s - 21 Aug 2003 13:23
Great Pub... superb on rugby days, and the Manager has put together a superb selection of delightful barmaids... and a geezer who doesn't speak english... the food is the undiscovered secret of Twickenham
Billy Bubble - 7 Jul 2003 17:29
The Tup is the best pub in the area, there is a good mix of ages but mostly late 20s to 30 somethings, there's a great atmosphere, good for sport, the staff are lovely, and leave the little French fella alone, he's cool.
Steve. - 12 Jun 2003 19:18
Not sue what your on about average age is about 25 - 28
Good easy going atmosphere, very much a rugby pub especially during season, Saturday is the night to choose
Mike Humphreys - 6 Jun 2003 18:15
A college and school pub. full of under age drinkers. no proper bouncers, think the manager stands on the door and a bloke who doesnt speak english- let anyone in! bands are good tho but play the same every week, gets boring. NEED BABYSITTERS THERE NOT BOUNCERS!
anonymous - 30 May 2003 21:52
I THINK THE PUBS COOL MAYBE PUT BETTER MUSIC ON MIX IT A BIT MORE GARAGE,RnB AND RAP AND THERE WILL BE A BETTER ATMOSPHERE.
MASTAH JAY! - 24 May 2003 13:18
The only place save Twix Rugby Ground to watch rugby. Mark the manager is a top bloke, the staff are wicked and the atmosphere is great. Top pub.
Ken - [email protected] - 18 Dec 2002 13:29
Fantastic, what more can I say. The atmosphere created by the music, the revellers not to mention the frankly stunning assistant manager is second to none.
Brendan - 23 Oct 2002 17:26
Great pub! Where else can you dance on the tables/bar without being asked to leave in Twickenham?! And the bands are great too!
Luke - 11 Sep 2002 20:57
Mad on rugby days and living proof that bar diving, bar dancing and total maddness can happen without getting drunk!
