user reviews of the Duke of York, Hanwell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I really don't get what everyone's problem is with this pub? firstly its a pub love, so there's going to be drunken people inside it. People smoke outside whats the problem? your not going to die if you walk past a couple of smokers and step on a couple of butts?? really?? Service is fine, a nice selection of drinks, its had a revap and i didnt see any rips in the seats. At the end of the day, a pubs a pub, whats wrong with a dog?? holy f*ck whats happened to society, people are just being sociable. If your looking for a snobby pub go up London.
This pub is perfectly acceptable, and its cheap...its the double dip recession im not complaining!

And what on earth is the comment at the beginning of the reviews supposed to mean?

"please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously."

Of course the comments are by site visitors - how else would they get on there? But they are also by people who have visited the pub in question. There are so many bad reviews for this vile pub. We can't all be making it up.

We went to this pub last night. It is looking even more dilapidated than ever, Filthy floors, fixed seating upholstery is dirty and ripped with the padding coming out. The ladies toilets were dingy and dirty with one light out. There was no toilet paper in either cubicle, unacceptable by any standards and especially so in a pub run by a woman.

Smokers standing around the door force customers to walk through a cigarette-end strewn pavement and a stinking miasma to get inside and once there, being accosted by falling-down drunks (at 6 in the evening) or having a regular's dog on a long leash run up and start sniffing through your shopping is not particualrly plesant either.

The landlady really needs to smarten up herself, her pub and her ideas. If you want to drink in this area, try the Fox or the Viaduct for a more pleasant experience.

This pub is heading downhill again. Piles of fag buts on the pavement outside because the pub doesn't provude a bin, peeling bright green and yellow paintwork and blokes standing outside who stare as you walk past. I used to go in here, now even though it's my nearest, I avoid it and head straight for The Viaduct or The Fox.

Would only stop in here for a 'quick half' if you're waiting to pick up a pizza or something.

Under New Management, An Irish Guy called Tom, Very friendly and its clean. But I think the beer is a bit pricey,

Totally agree with previous comment, absolute khazi, i thought i was in Warsaw, was served by a girl who barely spoke English and had two or three naughty looking Polish skinheads looking me up and down like i had two heads, i doubt i`ll ever go in there again.

Used to be my local 20 years ago. It was a lovely pub then. I could cry - I really could!
griffo59 - 8 Aug 2009 19:43
Unless you are Polish don't bother as won't be welcome.

Why anybody would want to have a drink in here is beyond me. Despite the refurb earlier this year the place is still soulless and serves the usual bland Fosters/Stella/John Smiths combination with no sign of any proper ale or decent lager.

The place is empty Sunday to Thursday, but makes all it's money on a Friday & Saturday night when it effectively turns into a banging Polish night club attracting a very "interesting" mix of people both inside and outside the pub.

Recently applied for an extension until 2:30am on Friday & Saturday, if it's granted it'll be a miracle and there will be local uproar as the existing pub is the focus for much local anti-social behavior and noise pollution.

Hanwell has some great pubs, The Viaduct, The Fox & McCanns to name 3, but the Duke Of York sure isn't one of them.

What the hell have they done to this pub - the new 'buzzing' atmosphere is a catastrophe. Full of high people who dance very badly. I ended up bruised just walking to the loo and back. Manners must be unfashionable and the beer has gone totally downhill. I will NEVER NEVER return to this hellish place.

The refurb is a great improvement, but the drinkers are still quite chavvy and so it's just not a nice place to go.

New owners, who've paid a lot of money to refurb the place. The legendary awful toilets now a lot better, and the pub's looking good throughout.

Same "lively" locals, and a decent pint.

Definately vastly improved by the refurb. Though living very close by i've been giving this one a wide berth for a year or so. If you've been doing the same pop in and have a look. Hopefully you'll be as presently surprised as I was.

Has had a refurb and I would say it is a major improvement, wooden floors, matching furniture and loads of standing room. I got a really nice Vodka Lime and soda (mixed just right) and my boyfriend said his pint was nice and crisp. Toilets have been painted but are still not very nice

I have had many a good night in here, beer is ok, Must agree about the toilets (Diabolical & smelly) and the locals can get a little excitable.
Boaby - 11 Jan 2006 15:58
This pub was once a verry nice pub, But has gon down hill since Bear is sub standard, toilets are a right state. Iy seems to atract agro'.
Shame, It WAS a good pub(i agree about food)

It's my local, and it's a good old-fashioned small pub. Maybe not to everyone's tastes but I like it. Jim the landlord's good fun for a Manc supporting irishman. Beer's good.

I've always enjoyed in there but I don't go very often and usually during the day for a couple of hours relaxation.

The drink are what you would expect from any pub, a good size so you're not overcrowded and toddlers are welcome, if they're under control (as much as toddlers can be under control).

The juke box took a little getting used to but persevere and you'll find out how to work it...

I do confess that my very good impression of this pub, which nobody else seems to agree with, is based almost entirely on weekend lunchtimes.
Steve - 7 Jan 2004 08:21
I would not recommend a staurday night in this pub - trouble occurs at this place - often and please its dull and people are un friendly
anonymous - 27 Nov 2003 12:35
Hmmmm. Not sure I agree with Stevo. Alright to have a couple of beers in, but it's a bit dirty and I certainly wouldn't eat there...
anonymous - 10 Nov 2003 14:39
This is a terrific pub. Quiet, bright front bar; small, snug middle bar, and a large back bar with satellite tv on the big screen. Great beer and friendly and efficient staff. Never eaten there but the food looks good too - nothing fancy, but generous portions of traditional "pub grub".
Stevo - 11 Apr 2003 08:44
