user reviews of the Market House Inn, Glastonbury

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A massive fight outside on Friday night. No change then, and to be avoided at all costs.
psychicyclist - 20 Feb 2012 09:30
Now it has a new set of people in. Not bad but I like a bit more choice in my ales. How's it going failed landlord final arbitter ?
GodLover1321 - 26 May 2011 22:28
On the market, it would seem.
The_Final_Arbiter - 15 Mar 2011 18:01
Finally entered this place, no way. Bit nervous to comment further, some of the below strikes me as a bit threatening.
psychicyclist - 26 Aug 2010 11:36
I can't believe that danchampion isn't screaming and whinging in the background somewhere, bleating that this is the best pub in the world...(not that it would make any difference)
hoonkerama - 25 Jul 2010 09:43
Visited this pub a while back with my 7 yr old at around 3.30 in the afternoon. They were advertising it as a 'family friendly' pub & had childrens games out on the tables which I thought was a nice touch. However, a couple came in, quite clearly off their heads, played some pool for a bit then had a very loud row, shouting & swearing in front of children. The landlord was present & didn't intervene at all. Sorry but saying you deal with anti-social behaviour then standing idly by & not doing a thing is hypocritical. We left, the rowdy couple stayed. You attract the clientele you deserve. The present owners clearly haven't a clue how to run this place & someone more deserving should take over.

I haven't been in here yet, sounds good, but I find the below writings a bit off putting.
psychicyclist - 26 May 2010 11:26
again lunchtime this time. this must be the most busy pub in glastonbury has their 5 people in. great ale in otter beer i can understand how it could one of the better glastonbury pubs
forestwood - 9 May 2010 11:11
Now I am spending more time in the area and having visited some of the other pubs in Glastonbury, this is definitely the best.
Landlord & lady both very friendly, staff are excellent and you cant fault the beer. I was tempted to try the jager-bombs these are not for the fainthearted, I am no longer a student and I will probably stick to the ale from now onwards. But if that sort of thing attracts you, they are good value
Cant wait for the kitchen to re-open as my wife and her sister ate here last September and enjoyed an excellent lunch in the bar. There was no space in the restaurant because it was full of lib dem councillors and the Chairman of Somerset County Council. Sister in law recognises the local dignitaries
But until then the free BBQ is a great idea. Until the new chef arrives

The plot of the ongoing saga thickens and Im intrigued that m_souris has taken up the cause. M_souris, Im not sure if I agree with your judgment that hoonkerama seems to have created another self= proboozer the terminology appears to give him away, but my money might go on the_ final_arbiter Perhaps you have been subjected to some private messages from hoon, so you know more than me I did and he definitely has a hidden agenda, but its obvious that the FA & Proboozer have too. Hoon claimed to be a local politician, if that helps anyone who might be interested in unmasking him. If your curiosity has been tweaked try ear-wigging over a pint at the Mitre, (which incidentally serves very good beer and is just a gentle stroll from back of Market House into their garden) You might pick up a bit more info as they too have been the unhappy recipients of derogatory comments.
To the uninitiated, who might be put off by the volley of reviews;
DO NOT BE FRIGHTENED OF VISITING GLASTONBURY,
I havent met any people in Glastonbury who openly exhibit the symptoms of multiple personality disorder, so hopefully the ones who contribute so frequently to this site reserve this behaviour for their cyber world . Now that I know more about the town, I suspect that those types lurk around with qms consort, therefore.
Youll be safe in the Market House as they exclude anyone who behaves anti-socially or irrationally.
Too much for one day, need to get back to reality and a good pint at the Market House.

PS my wife still thinks that there are malevolent forces afoot; a la Midsomer Murders, so be warned, do maintain your anonymity and bearing in mind her occupation, dont be surprised if you see this sort of thing as a plot or sub plot on a TV near you soon. Shes definitely including the artwork, which she loves and, judging from recent posts, it seems to have hit a nerve with the socially inept!!!!!!!!!

danchampion - 5 May 2010 12:15
THIS REALLY IS THE BEST PLACE TO VISIT IN GLASTONBURY.
OTTER ON TAP, SPECKLED HEN & OLD PECULIER IN BOTTLES. They seem to like to ring the changes with the ales, and they are always well presented. We enjoyed our drinks in the garden, which is coming into bloom nicely. We timed our visits (yes ~ we liked it so much we went twice) to coincide with the two free bbqs, so it was fabulous to sit with good company, eating good food and enjoy the weather.
The garden gets all the sun during the day (as long as its shining!) and the covered area is large enough to make the odd April/May shower inconsequential.
Staff still very friendly and clearly enjoy working in such a pleasant environment.
Every time we visit we mean to try some of the neighboring establishments but why bother when Market House is so good and the drinks are very very good value. The football machine is great fun. SO FOR THE PEOPLE INTERESTED IN GOOD BEER/ALE/DRINKS IN GOOD SURROUNDINGS THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE!!

And for hoonkerama and his other self, proboozer ~ do brush up on your reading skills, (0/10 for comprehension) the harpies were prevented from entering QED there werent and arent any anti- social people allowed into the premise.
And as a balanced view is always best please see some of the previous reviews

well - it just gets better. Market House, you did it again.
What a way to celebrate St George's Day. Free BBQ and all drink as usual excellent quality and cheap!!!!!.
Fabulous night, we all enjoyed ourselves. I'll check out the photos on facebook
If you are thinking of visiting Glastonbury you have to make the Market House your first port of call. I've never been disappointed. m_souris

Called in as we were in area again.
Ale excellent and dry blackthorn back. Staff still friendly.
Recliners in garden are useful addition. The special offer on spirits (1.00 a shot) makes the odd g&t more enjoyable and the Pimms was perfect.

This is very good place to visit when in Glastonbury. We were going to do a mini crawl but the chairs were too comfortable and the company too friendly but perhaps next time.

Thanks for including us in The Market House Inn Glastonbury Facebook photos
What a great idea for the summer.

I thoroughly approve of the new artwork in the Mens w.c. Having been on the receiving end of one of the miscreants comments, both public and private, I concede that the direct approach is the best. I have perfected my aim, and what a relief!!

We will visit again asap and recommend this to anyone wanting a good place to visit in Glastonbury. dan champion
Had to stop by on Sunday to taste the free bbq, which was splendid. The dry blackthorn was excellent and good value at 2.50 a pint.
Look at their Facebook page and see all the happy pinters ... oops punters
Good food, good drink and good company.
Lets hope the weather holds and they can repeat this on St George's Day April 23rd.
m_souris - 20 Apr 2010 00:06
Good beer - Adnams Bitter faultless.
Good cider - Thatchers gold perfect & old style Blackthorn returning soon
All spirits 1 a shot???
can't remember when I last got a round of 4 drinks for under 10.00!!
Good selection of teas - 98P!! roibosch included & soya milk -- it is Glastonbury and it helps when you have an aged tea-total parent in tow.
Disabled loo clean
carpark OK
large garden, nice, interesting mural anywhere with the sun shining is good after last winter.
Only downside was bad language (a la Gordon Ramsey) of some other customers
Staff asked them to tone it down successfully (and I suppose we hear worse on TV but aged parent not deaf yet)
Love those prices
Will visit again next time we're in Somerset

lady_hamilton - 10 Apr 2010 18:03
Excellent ale; Adnam's Broadside on tap, well presented and perfect temperature. Good price at 2.50pint - April special offer, so staff advised me not to expect it always to be this cheap.
Nice garden, part covered and safe place for bikes.
Staff very helpful and knew their stuff about real ales although shame there was only one on tap. My companions enjoyed their lagers and extra cold Guinness, all well served, manager obviously takes good care of their lines.
Main building clean and comfortable, but plain furniture, but then this is an Enterprise Inn, and anyone knows how they cripple their tenants with excessive rents and high beer prices.
WCs clean and well disinfected.
They do rooms at reasonable prices but kitchen not open yet for season - staff say its because of the recession and as we settled for the snacks I can understand
Passable, and fresh made cheese and tomato sandwiches, went down well before we pedelled off to Wells.
If you visit; sign their petition to end the Beer Tie!! then perhaps everyone can resume selling ale at 2.50/pt
Definately worth a re-visit and am planning a crawl as there appears to be other good pubs within easy stroll/pedel in the Town centre, so watch this space......

A great bank holiday visit to Glastonbury. Im fairly new to this reviewing lark, but have started researching pubs a bit before visiting an area. We did go in the Market House Inn. It seemed OK, nothing much to say really, we went in at a safe point in the day perhaps. Reading some of the recent reviews is fascinating. This danchampion for instance really seems to resent hoonkerama and torsteve . I dont get it. All hoonkerama basically says is that there was a police and an ambulance there one night. He doesnt have a go at the landlord or anything. Torsteve is much more to some point or another. Then of course we have this danchampion revealing that there are indeed, TWO ALCOHOL & DRUG ABUSING, FERAL, FOUL-MOUTHED DELINQUENT, LIEING, BRAZEN HARPIES, type people in there at some point. Well, thats basically all that torsteve and hoonkerama are saying isnt it? Also of course, one would now wonder if these types of customers are common in there.
Here are some clips from previous reviewers:-

what can i say about this place, its a gigantic toilet, its flooding the floor wiv horrid people so drunk that they try touching my genitals as i'm going to the bathroom pig.in.a.blanket

Undoubtedly a complete toilet. Should be closed down and start again with a human being or two running it. whatsgoingon

It was raining, and I was walking past when I noticed "House doubles 2-00, so I thought "What the hell?"
Big mistake!
It's still a dire shit-hole. I used to enjoy this place 25-30 years ago, but since Aussie Paul buggered it up, it's been getting worse and worse.
The landlord's a lugubrious bugger, and is VERY unpopular with other businesses in the town. I shall not return Final_Arbiter

If you are an under age chav this is the pub for you! Avoid at all costs! steveg

Then finally we have the breath taking comment from danchampion and m_souris regarding this horrific urinating game!!!!!!
Is this supposed to be good in some way?!!!?

proboozer - 4 May 2010 10:14
Well I came back again and am glad to report that the Old Speckled Hen on tap is excellent.
They have lots of things on for Bank Holiday, BBQs, special drinks and more easy chairs in the garden.

Having read a few of the older posts about this pub - I finally plucked up the courage to ask about the allegations against the Landlord, David. Just so 'torsteve' and 'hoonkerama' can get their facts straight, the guy is a very regular person, who during the course of his duties had to prevent - and I now quote his wife TWO ALCOHOL & DRUG ABUSING, FERAL, FOUL-MOUTHED, DELINQUENT, LIEING, BRAZEN HARPIES from entering the premises. The under-age harpies accused him of assault and he went through the harrowing process of it being investigated, and going to trial at the local magistrates court and guess what, as of Tuesday April 27th, hes NOT GUILTY. Lets hope they get their come-uppance soon.

I wonder if torsteve or hoonkerama are related in some way to the aforementioned harpies. It certainly seems that they have a whole different agenda, not interested in good beer, just spreading scurrilous, false and utterly poisonous rumours.

Not the sort of people one would want to bump into when enjoying a good pint. The notice by the front door does say they are specifically banned from entering. So it looks like the Market House is the safest place to visit when in Glastonbury, as you can be pretty sure the miscreants wont be favouring the market house with their company. The locals that I met were very welcoming and also very supportive of David, who runs their local. It has a great atmosphere and is well worth a visit
and the artwork is in pristine, or should that be 'pisstine' ? or latrine? condition.

good beer, good atmosphere and Landlords have amazing sense of humour
~ if you don't believe me ~ check out the mens wc,
where cyberworld meets reality
- it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase 'piss-potts'

will revisit for the drink but also to catch up on the next episode, which should be called 'don't get mad, get even'

m_souris - 15 Apr 2010 12:48
I thought so ! I wondered where all the positive reviews were coming from all of a sudden.
Oh well, the last post is the most honest post I've ever seen so far ! The actual owner has signed it "THE OWNER" ! Excellent !
I will watch that place with optimism.

If you really do not understand the significance of a police presence and an ambulance attending the Market House, I rest my case.....No doubt you will now follow this with some other ignorant comment. I have no idea who 'torsteve' is, but one thing's for sure, he's right ! Read it, and try to understand something.
hoonkerama - 7 Apr 2010 22:15
I have used this site to find good places to visit when I am out and about for some time but have only just started to do reviews as I now have a bit more time
I tell it as I find it and am sorry is this offends you, hoonkerama
and so to your post... the significance to The Market House Inn of police and ambulance in Magdalene Street on a Friday evening is????.............................
danchampion - 7 Apr 2010 21:31
Please DO NOT listen to the reviews by this 'danchampion' from Wells. Last Friday at the Market house, there was a significant police presence there, maybe the ambulance there had someting to do with it...It's like that the whole time.....Go and review pubs you're more familiar with.

The local hell-hole run by a thug and now nearly almost empty as he's had to stop serving children. He is currently on bail charged with assault!
Any customers left are neanderthals.
I pity any poor sod who is daft enough to book accommodation there on line. When they see it they will run a mile and no chance of deposit back.
Once he goes bust it will take forever to rehabilitate - probably end up being turned into flats and good riddance
torsteve - 2 Apr 2010 11:01
nice place! polite staff and a warm welcome only been in there once as i was visiting glastonbury all the locals were very pleasent and made me feel part of the pub thank you market house!

What a pity! This used to be the premier watering hole in Glastonbury, but in recent years has gone so far downhill it's almost subterranean! Plastic, aerated and overrated, in my opinion (not humble).
The_Final_Arbiter - 28 Jun 2008 13:08
Went in around 3.30 and we were the only folks in there. A pint of Sharps was had and was ok but souless place.

It looked as if it would be busier in the evenings.
LickeyEndBooze - 3 Jan 2008 18:09
Opposite the Abbey car park and obviously caters for that trade during the day. Dont know about the evenings. Nice loos.
