user reviews of the Mitre, Glastonbury

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Youths smoking at the doorway.... Male Youth tells his girlfriend to "wait for me, you MotherF*****"

Mind boggles at choice of insult.

We decided that this probably wasn't the place for us and we walked on past.
Mappiman - 16 Feb 2015 16:21
This pub really does seemed to be doomed, STILL cannot really get in the door! The permanent mob of smokers are still blocking everything. Without a doubt the most off putting pub ever.
psychicyclist - 23 Oct 2014 07:30
I have ticked the "like" button on the last review.....Complete waste of a pub A ?
hoonkerama - 19 Apr 2012 16:31
Walked past at 18:40 today.
CLOSED (or at least not exposing themselves to the risk of doing some business).
The_Heavy_Fandango - 11 Apr 2012 19:02
I'm told this place will have the benefit(?) of a change of patron today.
The_Heavy_Fandango - 18 Jan 2012 10:32
The entrance is still clogged with the few regulars and landlady making it the most uninviting pub ever. I would think their turnover must be a good 100 per week !
hoonkerama - 6 Sep 2011 08:14
Can't think why the Godbotherer believes that because people don't agree with him that they must be "failures".
(Or sad. or for that matter, bastards)
I suppose it takes one to know one.
Fine_Ale_Arbiter - 30 May 2011 20:12
This is a great pub good chat and good beer.
Unfortunately the "Final Arbiter" is a sad bastard who obviously has run a pub but failed. He hasn't a clue based on his previously faliures.
GodLover1321 - 26 May 2011 21:33
Ha ha ha.....Maybe if they all converted to pipe smoking and developed an intelligent facial expression ? It would be a lot better than the hunched, coughing, spitting, glaring, door clogging image !
You lot hate us right ? Of course you do, what else could you lot feel ?
How do you think we feel ? We might have liked to come and have a drink there ! You make it absolutely impossible ! Hey, I know, how about putting up a sign that reads, "if you're intelligent, educated, polite, courteous, non smoking, a good conversationalist.....KEEP OUT AND STAY OUT" !
hoonkerama - 11 Apr 2011 09:04
One of them is probably the "landlord". Another one could be his wife.
The_Final_Arbiter - 6 Apr 2011 15:27
Visiting Glastonbury again at last, and to my dismay I see that this pub STILL has its' doorway clogged with leering, smoking slobs. They seem to think that minimizing the chances of new customers ever trying this pub a virtue.
proboozer - 6 Apr 2011 14:15
As a former publican, I would never employ a smoker (Or a fat person)
The_Final_Arbiter - 5 Feb 2011 23:53
On a recent visit, I noticed the considerable improvement also. A good choice of beers, and well kept. And why shouldn't the landlord pop out for a smoke when he needs it - so long as someone is serving, of course? I will call in again - and continue to ignore the Arthur down the road!
beerpilgrim - 5 Feb 2011 21:56
I'm astonished at the last two entries, as he's always outside smoking whenever I'm passing.
The_Final_Arbiter - 25 Nov 2010 01:46
We've visted ths pub twice in the last month and found it to be excellent. The food was basic pub food but good. The service from the Landlord was excellent and he was very friendly and approachable. Will definately return when we come back to Glastonbury
Vaino - 24 Aug 2010 16:17
Visited the Mitre on May 25th 2010 with my partner. Only popped in for one. Ended up having three, such was the friendly atmosphere. The Landlord and Landlady were both welcoming and their hospitality was faultless.
Nutmeg1 - 28 May 2010 13:59
I found this pub was very quiet. A couple of guys whispering in my general direction.
psychicyclist - 26 May 2010 13:20
Was busy with a mix of old, young, families etc when I visited - most of them eating (food looked good but didn't try any myself.) Couple of ciders and Butcombe Bitter on tap. Sat in a weird little room out back that resembled the lobby of a funeral parlour (in a good way.) Big skittle hall was being used for horse betting; nice enough beer garden. Decent atmos overall - would go back.
droolian - 13 May 2010 17:08
very expensive 3-10 a pint for john smiths.god were i lived i would get 2 pints and change. only me in and the pub looked quiet even for a friday lunchtime
forestwood - 9 May 2010 11:07
Previous posts are absolute rubbish, take no notice of these, the establishment is very well run with welcoming and caring hosts. Please visit you will be welcomed with good food, drink and hospitality
smoothas13 - 22 Apr 2010 13:46
Just been done up.
Good beer, well presented, pleasant staff. Top marks for new clean wcs. Garden good and a nice place to enjoy a pint after a long but flat cycle over the levels.
Worth a visit and apparently the food is pretty good too.
danchampion - 7 Apr 2010 13:50
Thankfully all the scum moved here from another local pub when it got a new capable landlord.
Walk on past it to the King Arthur
torsteve - 2 Apr 2010 10:58
The "entrance" is still clogged with hideous, grotesque, fat smoking zombies. No new trade will EVER bother with this place. The new owners are nice idiots.
hoonkerama - 3 Feb 2010 13:57
It's like a three way split in here...Thug, gay, deserted...Take your pick...
hoonkerama - 27 Oct 2009 08:04
i visited this pub along with a few others on a trip to glastonbury and found quite the oppisite of wat these other comments suggest it was very welcoming and the regulars took the time to include me in there conversations as did the landlord. there is obviously only limited room for smokers outside but this is such a nice and friendly pub witch is more than i can say for some of the pubs i visited in glastonbury. aney one who is looking for a small relaxing pub with like minded people i sugest visiting this pub.

dr_long_schlong - 15 Oct 2009 17:50
Useless, why for God's sake do these, "landlords / ladies" allow these, "customers" to cosistently block the entrance / exit ? Are you so incapable of realising that this massively puts people off of coming in ? Basically you've turned your, "pub" into a large brick shed which only serves as a gathering point for the same gang of large, sweaty, smokers that seem to feel important in some way by preventing any new people from coming in. If by some miracle, someone risks going in, they barely move, and when they do grudgingly move aside, needless to say, they grunt, burp or fart at you. Next landlord / lady please.
whatsgoingon - 5 Oct 2009 07:58
Mitt Resister,
So what's happening?
The_Final_Arbiter - 26 Aug 2009 23:05
Come on!
I know you're watching.
Try to get just one thing right, and you may find an influx other than the dross (with a few exceptions) which you currently entertain.
The_Final_Arbiter - 20 Aug 2009 02:01
Struggled to get a photograph without the smokers at the front.
Here it is, but only just managed it, as the current incumbent seems to spend most of his time smoking out at the front of the pub, or in/outside other pubs, when he's not "up" himself, that is!
The_Final_Arbiter - 18 Aug 2009 23:54
Drove past twice today, but it wasn't open.
The_Final_Arbiter - 22 Jul 2009 23:27
I shall await the change with bated breath!
The_Final_Arbiter - 19 Jul 2009 00:16
Don't worry The_Final_Arbiter...pub will become more than half-decent...the Sparshott's are in town...!!
mitresister - 17 Jul 2009 20:26
Well, it seems the Mitre is changing hands on Tuesday 21st July, so let's hope it'll be something approaching half decent.
The_Final_Arbiter - 17 Jul 2009 09:47
Yes. I've seen the noticeboard in the market place. As you say, they don't seem to open until about four minutes past six! Mind you, if they have no customers, what's the point? But then again, if you don't open, how will you attract customers?
The_Final_Arbiter - 12 Jul 2009 00:07
I walked past here today, to see the barman standing outside with a pal, having a smoke. Pub was empty.
Really sad, as it was, until recently, the best in town, mainly because of the licensee and the food.
What a shame.
The_Final_Arbiter - 5 Jul 2009 22:47
There's a sign on an A-board in the market Place in Glastonbury, which states "Open All Day Every Day". Well, we have tried to get in there three times in the last ten days, and it wasn't! (Perhaps, after having read the reviews recently, we were spared from misfortune?)
Grand_Mufti - 30 Jun 2009 00:15
Apparently a few meals were consumed by customers here today. Didn't see them, so heard no comments. NO locals in here though.
The_Final_Arbiter - 21 Jun 2009 20:41
The new era doesn't look too good!
They don't cook too well, particularly roast potatoes and Yorkshire Puds, and if you order a Lamb Rhogan Josh, you might end up with a turkey curry, as I did. The "Head" chef is a child, so what can we expect?
Why don't these people acknowledge the fact that they are not "chefs" (because they are not fFrench), but they are COOKS. Nothing special there, is there?
The_Final_Arbiter - 29 May 2009 02:53
Well, the start of a new era!
New people here now, who also run the Castlebrook, in nearby Compton Dundon. Nice couple, with positive ideas about how the house will go in the future. They started yesterday lunchtime (Sunday), and food service begins on Thursday. (Thursday curry nights would appear to be on the menu again, so that's good.)
I must admit, I miss Mary & Co., but life goes on, as they say, and I couldn't imagine a better pair of "directors". Welcome to Sally & Keith (who are patently NOT Pubco puppets.) I shall reserve my rating until I've tried everything (which is only fair, is it not?)
The_Final_Arbiter - 12 May 2009 00:37
Well, that's it. End of an era.
Any reviews from now will be for a different pub; new licensee; pubco puppet.
The_Final_Arbiter - 5 May 2009 09:03
Well folks, your last chance to try the Mitre as it is now will end on 4th May! (God only knows what it will be like from now on, as frankly, anyone taking on a pub in the current climate has to be classed as "a lamb to the slaughter".)
Mary has done a sterling job despite those arseholes at Punch Taverns trying to bully her, and I will not be alone in missing her; in fact if she was stupid enough to take another pub elsewhere, I'd follow her to drink there, but she's not that daft! Pop in on or before or the 4th May, and see what you have missed. That leaves only one decent boozer in the centre of town, and the other one is leased from the same bunch of usurers, so I hope it survives!
The_Final_Arbiter - 27 Apr 2009 00:09
A ?
I have responded ! The review that starts with the word amazing, the review that thanks you, the final arbiter ! What more do you want ? Surely you can see it can't you ? I don't really feel like introducing myself, after seeing that mob outside the Mitre for a few months. It seriously put me off from going in there even though they appear to have gone. I agree with you almost entirely about the Glastonbury pubs, near uninhabitable.....

sailinghomeward - 15 Dec 2008 22:28
Dear Sailing homeward,
Well, I did think that after the recent postings, there might have been some sort of response.
Have you been back in to the Mitre, and introduced yourself?
No?
Thought not.
Look.
In the centre of Glastonbury there are only two pubs worth a look.
If you ignore this one, you're in a sub-class, so probably better going somewhere tacky.
The_Final_Arbiter - 14 Dec 2008 00:44
Amazing ! I communicated with, "The Final Arbiter", and to my surprise, he agreed with my views on the "mob". Then to my further surprise, he told me that he would try to rectify the situation. Well, to my really further further surprise, NO MOB !!! Let's hope it stays like that......(I might even go in there again)
sailinghomeward - 23 Oct 2008 09:31
Horrible mob of yobs outside the front door the whole weekend. Absolutely ridiculous. Drink good, food good ? Who cares, get that hideous mob of morons out of it ! Other people would like to get in ther maybe ?
sailinghomeward - 17 Oct 2008 22:33
Curry and a drink on Thursday nights for six quid. (Just had my fourth one) Absolutely brilliant. Good value. Good beer. Good pub.
Cannot fault it.
The_Final_Arbiter - 17 Oct 2008 00:09
Well, is it me, or is there really a large mob of what can only be described as middle aged thugs near permanently outside the front door of the Mitre ?
No, I'm not imagining it, they really are there. Blocking the door so no one can get in or out properly. Many many people are saying this about the Mitre, and many many people will not go there because of them. There's a garden out the back...Get out there !
sailinghomeward - 8 Oct 2008 10:19
Deffo the best pub in Glastonbury. Interesting mix of customers. Expensive grub, but then, where isn't?
The_Final_Arbiter - 28 Jun 2008 13:04
Returned to The Mitre just after Easter to find the Butcombe winning my personal best beer of the year award. Even the very friendly locals recommending it to us grockles. Ham egg and chips excellent, loos clean, staff good.
thebrewer - 27 Mar 2008 18:40
Butcombe, Doombar and Smiths. Various lagers and 3 ciders.

Friendly local pub.

Food was good, I had ham, egg and chips, and it was huge. Good VFM.

Staff were polite and efficient.

If you want to briefly get away from the _magic_ of Glastonbury, this is the place to see the _normal_ regulars.

Recommend it.
chris_debian - 18 Mar 2008 19:28
I don't normally do solids on a pub crawl, but if I did, I'd eat in this one, washed down with their good ale. Beware, don't stay here all night, tempting though it may be, there are better pubs in town.
davelambert4 - 18 Jan 2008 16:48
A decent pint in a drab pub. Maybe being last in before afternoon last orders wasn't the best time to visit.
LickeyEndBooze - 3 Jan 2008 18:12
Sharps Doombar excellent. Landlady courteous. Barstools high. Thsts it.
thebrewer - 3 Jan 2008 17:54
