Recently visited this place.been on my "to do" list for some time.arrived early for lunch with my aged parents & the place instantly felt more like a restaurant than a pub. That said the staff were friendly & polite.shortish bar menu, so we all went for fish & chips which was excellent. The interior is a bit modern, i was expecting a more traditional pubby feel. With the emphasis firmly on the food I would return perhaps with Mrs tramadol as part of her rehabilitation into the wider community.

Visited between Christmas and New Year. Great location, food very generous and beer fine. Somehow lacked a bit of atmosphere and not helped by family with screaming toddler parked near the bar who was clearly annoying us and other customers. Sadly no evidence of the attitude to kide noted by bessyjo2 some months age!

We last visited in September 2008 and doubted we would return, but we did.
New Year's Day with friends for a walk in the Great Park. Car park empty although road parking was impossible. A pre walk pint of Santa's Wobbler set us up nicely with something a little gentler afterwards with soup (not as described but OK) and chips. Despite crowds of epic (Cecil B DeMille) proportions service was fine. Maybe best to avoid quiet summer Sunday lunches in the restaurant.

Seems to be more food orientated than anything else. Not bad food though, good location right next to the Great Park.

Caters for Windsor Great Park Walkers. Nice location, but we found it expensive and not very child-friendly. Young children are certainly not welcome in the rear garden of the pub, where we initially sat. The menu states that they are "expected to remain seated and behave as young adults". Of course we didn't realise that this was the policy until after we sat down, and the waitress's manner was a little snooty as she re-directed us to the front garden, which is less formal. Unfortunately it is also next to a road, so with a 5 and nearly-3 year-old, we couldn't really relax, especially as there were bushes that they could easily squeeze through, that wouldn't enable us to follow. However, our 5 year old did love the tree in the garden, and managed to climb right to the top of it (despite being told not to). He will probably remember that for the rest of his life, and so for that reason alone I give the pub a 7. The food was pricey, but the portions were good, and it was good quality. There were lots of well-behaved dogs for the kids to pat. The toilets were not at all child friendly. The kids couldn't reach the taps or soap, and there were no nappy changing facilities, so I had to change the little one on the toilet floor. On a positive note, there was plenty of parking, and no nasty notices about clamping, so we felt relaxed in taking a short walk in the park before our meal.

Lovely location on the edge of Windsor Park. The pub is cosy in the winter and the beer garden is a great setting for spring/summer. Highly recommended. Good choice of ales usually, although service veers between excellent and frustrating. The restaurant is also good, if a bit pricey.

Popped back to the Fox again this week, now that its colder the log fires are burning making this gorgeous summer pub into a warm cosy retreat away from all the hustle and bustle of the real world.
Like the look of the new winter menu too. I ate the belly pork which was fantastic whilst hubby had the game pie. Perfect! Just wish we'd left room for desserts as the chocolate brownie looked superb. Oh well, maybe next time.

I should have paid more attention to the way my initial enquiry was handled. On Saturday I phoned the pub to book a table for my wife and I at lunch on Sunday. The cheery voice on the answering machine promised to call back as they were too busy to take my call. They didnt, but I did. I was given the choice of various slots but not 13:00 to 14:30. That suggested they were popular and well organized. Correct on one count only.
We arrived at the appointed hour and were told that, although there was no trace of my booking they could fit us in. We waited half an hour for our drinks and food order to be taken and were told that our order, the plaice, was finished. A sign of popularity no doubt but they could have warned us when we were given the menu. We regrouped, made a fresh order and the starter arrived quite promptly. We then waited another half hour for the main courses. I had switched to a Chicken Caesar salad. Only because I was really hungry was it possible to eat what arrived. The chicken may have come from a tin, it was coated in mayonnaise which held the mess of apparently shredded chicken together in a glutinous lump. Quite the nastiest example of a really simple salad I have come across.
Looking around we could see other would be diners being ignored. From the couple who arrived just after us but still hadnt eaten anything by the time we left, to the table of six who arrived before us but had not been served their main course when we left. Or to the couple who asked for a Muscat de Beaumes de Venise (modestly priced) with their dessert who were served dessert after a long wait, asked again for their wine, waited five more minutes were served coffee and eventually after complaint were served their wine. I hope they didnt tip, we didnt and I doubt if I will return to a lovely Berkshire pub restaurant I used to enjoy and recommend to friends.
As a reminder of a remarkable afternoon, my wife and I are now suffering from symptoms remarkably like mild food poisoning.

A nice enough pub, but went there today for food with my family and we waited an hour for food. After the barman assured us he could fillet the fish for us it arrived un-filleted. Also, quite small portions and very over priced. Lovely chips...but, so few of them! 10% service charge added to the bill which was compulsory, but this was barely table service. Order food at the bar and get own cutlery. Good location, probably better just for a beer...

Stopped here late Sunday afternoon after a walk in Windsor Great Park just for a pint of Hogs Back Hop which is there summer ale of 5% ABV -very nice and will try again in future.
Beer garden packed so must be popular and pub itself appears good.

Had lunch here the other day. Fantastic pub in a great location, right next to Windsor Great Park. Food was very good with service to match. If the staff could've sorted out the weather then my day would've been perfect.

A decent place to go for a couple of summer ales (if you can find it!!), usually have Pride, Brakspears Bitter and A.N.other available.

Ambience inside is nice, if a little tally-ho for some peoples liking.

Can't comment on the food...

Worth a stop if in the park.

Went here for lunch during the week. This is another pub which appears to be content with mediocrity. It's a wonderful building in a superb location but when you arrive and see letters missing from the front sign you begin to fear the worst. You expect better from a freehouse.

It was busy enough with one large group and a number of small ones, thus keeping the staff, only three of them, on their toes. Their attitude was slightly better than indifferent. It's the sort of situation that requires a manager but there wasn't one in sight. The staff all appeared to be local and in typical English fashion were just doing enough without stretching themselves, "serving" just isn't British.

To be fair the beer TEA was good and so was the food if overpriced. I always feel sorry for the kitchen staff in those circumstances because the front of the house people are letting them down.

This ought to be a Rolls Royce but it's stuttering along as a Mondeo.

I do hope the management at this lovely pub sort their staffing problems out quickly! AND get a good chef back in too...!! This place is far too good to let standards fall, and vitally important to walkers/visitors/tourists to Windsor Great Park, and Saville Gardens nearby, not to mention all the royal connections in the area and the good folk who actually live in 'WGP'...!! GET A GRIP MANAGER, AND QUICKLY...!!! (We love this special place too much!! Used to be 9/10 but last visit was 6/10 !! TJ

Re: last comment by 'anon'...
I have to agree...! Went back to Fox & Hounds for Sunday lunch and we had to wait 55 minutes for sandwiches..!! Very poor service. When it did come it was ordinary! Nothing like the last steak sandwich we had had there about 3 months ago. Very disappointing.
For a busy little pub in idyllic location, the bar was seriously under-staffed today, hence the poor service. Just waiting for a drink at the bar took about 10mins..! I saw one chap waiting to be served, but he obviously couldn't hang around indefinately, and he walked out the door! I have changed my rating from 8 to 6 out of 10. We would go here again, but just for drinks next time. Most people can't afford to wait an hour for 'cold' food !! TJ

Went here for lunch after reading these reviews and can only say we were VERY disappointed indeed!

The food may sound inviting on the restaurant menu (which we were informed was the only one available) but it was cooked to a poor standard. The chicken was bland and the veg overcooked and soggy - something that isn't hard to get right - and the smallest portion we've ever seen! It was also highly overpriced for a pub!! They are trying to cook restaurant style food, but not at restaurant standards. Better to stick to pub fayre that is cooked well IMO. We told the waitress when she cleared our plates and she apologised, then said they appreciated the feedback. We were offered one complimentary dessert which we accepted, however, this wasn't worth bothering with either. The waitresses were pleasant enough and the service acceptable, but all in all an expensive lunch and one place we definitely won't be eating at again. It's a shame as it's in an ideal location and we expected more.

Food - 5/10
Service - 7/10
Ambience - 5/10

Well...if you've found the 'Fox & Hounds' next to Windsor Great Park, you've done well..! You'd never find this place without sat-nav and directions from a good friend! But what a find when you're there..!!
I couldn't care if they served beans on toast or the finest venison, the location is great! 30 yards from gates into one of the best parks in the country! And on a sunny day you just can't beat it. They have a bar menu, and a proper restaurant menu, but i think they stop serving at 2.30pm, so get there early for lunch. The bar menu will suffice. Have a few drinks, then wander off into The Great Park, its worth seeing the horse statue about 20mins walk away (Georgio Tertio)! Did you know, if a horse statue has both front feet off the ground the rider died in full battle. If the horse has only one front foot off the ground the rider died as a result of wounds received in battle... they made a film about King George III. What a fantastic back garden he had to roam in! And if you fancy a good long walk, try the 3 mile walk down to Windsor Castle. Lizzie might be in..!! TJ

Went there for lunch last Friday. Good pint of Hog's Back TEA and the food was good, especially as I wasn't paying (thank you Charles). At the risk of an un-"PC" comment, I thought the waitresses were very comely.

When we returned to our cars, the car park had been treated to several piles of horse manure, so we imagined that a troop of Household Cavalry might have popped in for a quick half.

Very much the country feel here, with horses clip-clopping down the road beyond the tables on the lawn outside. Superb pints of Hogs Back TEA. Light wood floor & large windows lend an airy feel to the bar, good looking blackboard menu but restaurant prices. Felt I should have ordered plums to make my manc accent more acceptable round here, but no-one was looking down their nose at us. Good pub.

Nice Pub, good to see (and Taste) Hop Back Brewery TEA and Golden Garden, nice drop of Brakspear's too. Resturant food excellent with a fine menu, good value for money, but you'll need to book at weekends.Situated on the edge of Windsor Great Park, gets very busy in the summer.

Ate from the bar menu here last night and 5 out of 7 of us were disappointed with our food! I and two others had spaghetti with chicken, mushroom and pepper in a pesto sauce. It was bland and actually quite bitter in taste, and over smothered in cream, which made me feel a bit queasy afterwards. A couple of other friends had caesar salad, which shouldn't really have been described as a salad as there was no salad in it - just chicken, croutons, cheese and a bit of parsley, no lettuce at all! When the waitress cleared our table we mentioned we were not impressed with the food, she said she'd tell the chef, but we heard nothing more, no manager came to apologise or offer us free drinks as you might hope. Got the impression this wasn't the first time they had heard such complaints. A shame, as the pub is in a lovely setting, great for drinking, and I hear the more expensive restaurant menu is very good. Don't think I'll be eating there again though.

Lovely pub, right by the Great Park. Go on a sunny day with a spouse and sit outside and bask in the glory of it all.

Nice pub. A pleasant walk from Windsor through the park led us to this establishment. 3 Real Ales on, inc Brakspears and a couple from the Hopback Brewery, well kept, moorish and competitively priced. Interior was in keeping with the rustic rural charm of the area, and there were plenty of fox hunting pictures adorning the walls which wetted the appetite for a fine rare steak.
darloexile - 18 Apr 2006 11:32
The drinking side of this establishment is a bit on the tatty side but they sell a good range of bitters and there are lagers as well. Not very large but pleasant with limited seating but then, who wants to sit when drinking a real ale? The restaurant side of things is superb...beautiful food served by extremely pleasant waitresses (+ very sociable guy). I have been here many times and the standard of the food is always first class.Well worth a visit.
