Why do the bar staff keep throwing and i mean THROWING empty beer bottles into a bin behind the bar. .CRASH.. every minute, it can be heard all the way across the room. I've even seen glass fly up when they do this.

Now called the Angel , still the same though
usual wetherspoons wurzels at the bar, but well run and plenty of choice
winchesterclub - 14 May 2015 22:47
Never had a problem with this place, Good beer and good food service.
wortman - 6 Feb 2015 01:44
What a dump and Arsenanlfan36 is a bloody Wanker.

5 festival beers on 4 of them foreign ones three days before the festival starts is a little odd one thinks. That said it was a nice surprise
guestale - 22 Oct 2012 13:40
All day breakfast was very good for the price and the three pints of Beartown Black Bear went down a treat. Called here on the 4th June 2011 and will go again.
reelaleboy - 10 Jun 2011 19:54
Last time i went in there there were only 2 ales on, not good enough for a JDW establishment

Beer was of a good standard, food was good too
I visited with the children and we were made to feel welcome although it was difficult to find a clean table.
Aftr a 5 minute wait one was cleared for us and the food was brought shortly after
A fairy typical Wetherspoon / Lloyds No1 Bar experience

The situation with plastics is a bit of a touchy one.
What we have managed to arrange is a more suitable solution with the licensing officers at Basingstoke.
Glass will now be used on all days with 3 exceptions: Wed, Fri & Sat evenings from 2100 onwards.
This is a positive step and we hope is a welcomed change. Lets us know your feedback please.

This place is a dump. Beer is average. Not my kind of place.
robfrancis - 28 Jun 2009 19:42
Yes the plastic glass issue is a pain !
maybe on a Friday & Saturday night but not during the rest of the week
& don't try dodging the issue by having a bottled Beer that gets put into a plastic pint glass as well
must be LLoyds bar thing because the other Wetherspoons at the top of town is glass all the way,
mind you looking at some of the clientele in here it may be a good thing
winchesterclub - 17 Feb 2009 15:32
Busy, noisy, dark, full of slappers, poor beer served in plastic glasses so don't come here for the beer. Big screens showing music videos and the news. Bizarre mix of seedy business men, a few middle aged locals and the aforementioned slappers. On the plus side the service was a big quicker than the usual JDW/Lloyds standard.

Big, new(ish), shiney glass-and-steel Wetherspoons construct serving the cinema area.

The drinks range was pretty good and my Mauldons Black Adder was fine but a word of warning - they serve beer in plastic cups...even on a quiet Monday night in crazy Basingstoke!! If Mondays require beer to be served in plastic, Saturdays must be a riot!

On the plastic cups issue alone, I couldn't recommend this place as a beer venue but it's probably pleasant for coffee and lunch in the afternoon because of the glass frontage. But that's not why we're here, is it boys and girls?
Quinno - 3 Feb 2009 13:45
hi guys i think lloyds is awesome it has a wide variety of different drinks and most of the staff can recommend a drink to what most people prefer the prices are good and the product is always a brand name not just any old thing and the staff seam to cope well under stress considering but would you smile all night on a friday/ saturday when every one is out drinking and people are being rude? i think not would deffo drink here often a must have on any decent pub crawl
mrhonkey - 19 Dec 2008 04:45
As you receive your cheap drinks at the bar you turn round to face the pub and it"s inhabitants and you think to yourself "you get what you pay for in this life"
Just too big and industrial looking for my liking for this old school pub drinker
if your like me "& your a wide-eyed loner standing at the gates of obilivion then hitch a ride with us because we are on the last freedom mo-ped out of nowhere city!"
(or go to the Wetherspoons at the top of town )
winchesterclub - 12 Nov 2008 16:05
oi barstaff!! stop being so miserable and wipe the fking bar down!!

this pub is awful, it's like being at an airport pub, without the excitement of a pending holiday.
kittenfoxytrot - 13 Mar 2008 14:39
What a s**t hole.
fiftyfive - 3 Feb 2008 11:56
Been in here a couple of times and to be honest its a bit naff. Okay meeting point and then move on. You cant sit outside after a certain time in the evening and your told quite rudely by the bouncers to go sit inside. Who wants to sit inside on a hot evening? Never enough bar staff working and the ones that are are rushed off their feet. Usually nowhere to sit inside when you do go in there. The Females that use this pub are not toilet trained. Am going to try this pub during the day as it looks like it could be alot better.
Terroricia - 16 Nov 2007 11:51
This is one of the better puns around in the town centre, and is always very lively,

Food and drinks are pretty good.

Things that let it down, 'some' of the staff are quite rude, and you used to get some right idiots in there on a Sunday afternoon,.... but saying that was in the Sat afternoon and it seemed fine to me,.... (apart form the rude bar maid)
anonymous - 18 Jul 2007 10:29
Bit suprised with reading some of the bad reviews today after going to this pub yesterday. The service was fine and the food was excellent.
Carl1982 - 15 Jun 2007 15:19
Service is really poor, not the staff's fault more the fact there is never enough of them.
teen - 11 Apr 2007 15:55
Modern spacious, allluminium chair place pub (well, bar). As an infrequent summertime hot day LUNCH TIME user I don't mind this place at all. Nice big cool openn grass space at the front looking onto Basing View. Beers are general, nothing to write home about.

anonymous - 10 Mar 2007 14:07
I was in here on Friday 23rd Feb and as usual at the end of the night, after they had taken my money, I was forced out of the door. It reminded me why I do not drink in this pub. They are welcoming and pleasent until it is closing time and they cannot get rid of you quick enough! "Thank you for your custom" would be nice!!
bish80 - 27 Feb 2007 01:02
i would just like to say to the last poster you must have been in the wrong bar most of the bar staff in lloyds are british
zep1702 - 15 Sep 2006 19:48
Nice and spacious but that space is soon filled with drunken yobs fighting and the bar staff hardly speak a word of english which means I have ended up with the wrong drink on numerous occasions
kimbo2709 - 5 Sep 2006 18:40
Friday night may be second in atmosphere but I still would not entertain spending a night in lloyds in basingstoke. The only reason why it is busy is because, sadly there is no competition for them. If there other venues near them, then they would be in trouble! Lloyds is overrated in this Basingstoke but there is no real alternative. And as for the comment from user on 22 May 2006 who obviously did not like that barman, then I can only assume you were caught smoking at the bar and got told not to do it!!!! Ho hummm Smoking at the bar - don't do it and you won't get moaned at!!! DJ on Sat night is all right.
anonymous - 13 Jul 2006 20:22
Thanks zep im a bit old for the dancefloor lol but i do like the pub it has certainly got a good atmosphere and the food and drink is good especially all the continental bottled beers they make a change from the norm.
The wetherspoon brand has got a bad name which in many cases is justified but definately not here this is a brilliant modern pub with friendly staff good service ans a good atmosphere
BAILEY65 - 17 Jun 2006 15:12

zep1702 - 13 Jun 2006 16:09
This used to be quite a good bar but of late, particularly friday nights, the atmos has not been that great. Also, I noticed that the possibly the best bar person I have seen in Basingstoke no longer works there so getting served will take longer as ther other staff are nowhere near as quick and good as he was!!!!!!!
anonymous - 19 May 2006 00:30
...one of the nicest pubs in the town,.... can get very packed though and bit of an effort to get to the toilets and back,...

.... lunch during the day is good value,... can't wait till it becomes no smoking in May as mentioned on it's website,.... be nice to walk in there for lunch during the week with out stinking of smoke,
regularbeerdrinker - 17 Feb 2006 16:51
Not bad at all, 'classy' whetherspoons in a not-so-classy town. Can get quite busy but there's lots of staff and the atmosphere is pretty good in the evening (although the music can get a bit loud!).

Still, it tends to get full of chavvy women who have probably left their 4 kids at home for the night!

anonymous - 3 Feb 2006 20:53
I went here on a night out with friends as I am from Reading. Really good night! Not sure what these myths are about boring Basingstoke because I did not see any of it during any my time here. Staff are really friendly and atmospshere was incredible. Amazing location, lovely ladies and a good mix of music! Cant go wrong with that! Def going there again!
partyon - 14 Oct 2005 13:11
I had a pint of Hoeggarden down there, it is advertised as 'White Beer' but is it supposed to be luminous?
Alexh1982 - 26 Mar 2005 08:13
Drinks prices now at ripp-off levels.
raywest - 11 Dec 2004 11:13
Can I just say they do NOT server JD in here, just a poor alternative... Bad move!
Larry Llyods - 4 Nov 2004 21:58
Service has improved now.
ray - 11 Jul 2004 00:04
Poor service but OK in the daytime.
ray - 12 Jan 2004 17:43
Too garish and too many neon lights. Go up the Soldiers instead.
Alexh1982 - 25 Nov 2003 00:45
This is a "trendy" new bar - part of Basingstoke's much needed revival! Drinks are good and it's always packed on the weekend. Unfortunately - lacking in atmosphere! There is a dance floor that no-one ever ventures onto - now matter how late or how drunk! Which I think, makes everyone feel a bit self-concious! Could improve with time though!
