user reviews of the Roebuck, Kennington

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

In search of a change from our regular pub, I scoured this site and chose the Roebuck based on its 8.3 rating and reviews - which have clearly been written by the pub, unless your idea of a good night includes:

- empty on a saturday night except for 3 people at the end of the bar, and a family (including at least 4 small children) which grew during the evening

- the decor of a uninhabited travelodge tea-room (with a touch of The Shining), plus a couple of welcoming England flags here and there

- bright overhead lighting throughout

- video screen playing 80s hits, otherwise blissful silence bar the kids

- last orders at 10.30, asked to drink up 15 minutes later ("just waiting for you now yeah?")

- the warm feeling of trespassing in someone else's house

It's a must for those with the right sense of humour. Also very clean.

Great little pub, currently closed for one week under going refurbishment and re-opening on November 2nd. Karaoke on a Friday night, which is always fun. Clean, lively, friendly, I would hihgly recommend the Roebuck to anyone on all fronts - food, drink, facilities and atmosphere.

Really friendly pub, set back from the busy Oval area. Lovely little beer garden which on a sunny day is a wonderful little oasis.

The staff are always really friendly and chilled. Superb quiz machine too.

I've been there on quite a few occasions and always had a really enjoyable evening, have even attempted a very drunken karaoke -I apologise to anyone who had to witness that!

I'll be going back again.

Heard about this site from a friend, just got to say this is my local, I love the place, had a great Christmas Eve, loved watching the cat in the Christmas tree. Enjoyed new years, everyone was so nice. Best wishes to all users and staff for 2007

I went in on a quiet weekday afternoon after a county match. It's a pretty big place, the staff are friendly, the beer is OK and it's a short walk from the Oval. It's not a pub for the real ale fanatic or the gastropub-trendy set, but it's a good backstreet boozer.

Heard that My Way version. Hey Ho Silver Lining had us joining in from the garden. What a great night after a good day at the Oval. We were made very welcome and the atmosphere was great. This will be the pub for us at future Oval events.

Had three great lunches with friends during the last test. Went back after the game, good service from a bar well staffed, really enjoyed the karaoke on the
Friday, got to the point where I wanted to join in, so did. We all have our 15mins, mine was four and My Way (badly) but what cheering and clapping!!

Five of us visited this pub before and after the Surrey vs Middlesex 20/20 last Friday. An extremely friendly and efficient service from the landlord and his staff.
I despise karaoke but the Nina Simone soundalike was superb.
This pub is a ''must visit'' for everyone any time they are in the area.

Enjoyed lunch with friends who took me along on the one day test at the Oval. I must admit that I was amazed at the service. Staff and customers all seemed laid back but it happened! The garden is smashing where we relaxed after the game until the England game started. The pub was totally rearranged to make sure everyone could see. Had a great day with friends thanks to this very pleasant venue.

after going through the listings visited here to meet up with friends recently moved into the area. We all had a great evening. Not many old fashioned pubs left so our mates are going to be visiting this one frequently.

Moved away three months ago, visited friends and went to the pub. Was greeted like an old friend, they remembered my name and drink, a brilliant pint of Guinness. Admired the Christmas decs, and watched with everyone else with amusement as THAT CAT sat in the tree. Love this pub.

Had two great evenings and two days watching testmatch
TV. Watched great staff working to please everyone. Enjoyed the celebration champagne from the landlord and the welcome given to the Aussies, a genuine cheer and handshakes all round from the English in the bar, which set the tone for a fantastic memorable evening. Made me proud. Will be going back

Absolutely heaving after the recent Ashes at the Oval - certainly a contrast to all the other times when Ive been in and there have been a maximum of ten people quietly sipping their pints.

The pub more than rose to the challenge though with loads more bar staff and VB beer for our Antipodean friends.

Thoroughly recommend this pub - it spacious, not pretentious, has a great outdoors area and is very welcoming

Really enjoyed a Friday evening here, Karaoke not my thing but enjoyed watching - not too many Sinatra's either.
Everyone seemed to be having fun, cheered me up a lot just watching. Will be going back to see what else goes on.

Good pub. It seemed to have karaoke on when I last visited (a Friday evening) which is not to everyone's taste

Recommend this pub as a friendly local, even if you are not local. Liked my welcome, pint, and chat with the staff. Will be back

After a very nasty experiencewith the manager in the nearby Fentiman Arms I went here to cool down. Enjoyed a quiet beer in the garden, and felt welcome, not only that they said goodbye and thank as I left. Will be heading back there again soon.

Had a great Pimms after turning down a very expensive jug at a nearby pub. Enjoyed a steak and another Pimms all for less than the cost of the jug. No service charge either.

Went here after 20/20 game at the Oval trying to avoid the crush of other local pubs. Found it very welcoming and friendly. No prentention for sure, a good old fashioned pub. Liked the atmosphere, garden and locals who all seemed friendly. Didn't see the cat though.

Indeed; very nice friendly cat. And good spacious drinking pub with no pretensions. Not the easiest to find but good for us locals - probably 5-10 mins walk from Oval or Vauxhall tubes. I'd say this is a pub more for beer than wine - it is slightly disconcerting when asking for white wine to be offered liefraumilsch as the first choice but they do have better wines although all come in the small bottles; I suppose they dont sell much wine. Overall I would thoroughly recommend this pub.

Nice cat; standard pub; great for drinks
