First thing that caught my attention was Directors on tap. I'd given up drinking it over a decade ago because everywhere I went it wasn't kept properly thus tasted stale and bitter. However, I gave it a go and was positively surprised; trust me, next time here, rather than dive in to a 'safe lager', try the Directors, Doom Bar, etc on offer, as they seem to know how to maintain a cellar properly.

We were doing 'family lunch'. Can't speak for the rest of my party but I had burger and chips and it was great! The general consensus was that the food looked good and there was plenty of it. Lots of the menu items were called this "of the day", that "of the day", etc which usually implies fresh ingredients.

a restaurant not a pub nowadays, run by a really miserable landlord

Good sized seating area with plenty of tables but despite this the locals crowd the bar and you can't see the pumps for the people. However good Doom Bar well served with not too much gas or too cold. Very extensive menu with plenty of variety well presented food which was very tasy, this is the first pub I have had to sneak cheese from my cheese and biscuit (not on the menu) home in my pocket because there was just SOOOOO MUCH cheese. Despite it being August I would like to go back in the warm weather as it appears to have a very extensive and well appointed garden area. Good place.

Only visit was by 15 of us on way back from the Isle of Wight bar billiards tour of 1977 ! No b-b's but we were thirsty and played pool...
Inviting place.

The food here is very good with a big selection from the bar and restaurant menus. However, the staff and landlord are miserable and the food is expensive (but filling) for a pub (starters ~7, mains 12-15).

I have been to this establishment a few times now and have really enjoyed my trips.
My husband has had the half lamb shoulder a few times now and phew! its a huge portion!!! Great value for money at 15.95.
The landlord could do with a smile on his face every now and then which would be alot more welcoming but nonetheless, a thoroughly enjoyable meal!!
Oh yes, the desserts are amazing!

Don't let the fact that this pub is situated right next to a garage, it's well worth a visit. If you want good, inexpensive food on a Sunday evening, this is the place to come to, be wise and book a table though. Expect staff to be helpful and friendly.

Terrific old coaching house, well kept beers to suit all tasts.
Food is really comprehensive, extensive bar menue (chalk board ) and a very nice " up market " restaurant, for wining and dining the nagger.
Has a skittle alley that can hold upwards of 100 people for "do's".
All in all a great night night out.
Free house, owned and run by Clive Smith. Contact him on : -
