user reviews of Via Fossa, Canary Wharf

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I went here for lunch on New Years Eve with some friends and had a very pleasant experience with nice surroundings and friendly student type bar staff. We decided to rearrange our last minute NYE and go back later on as they said the downstairs 'club' would be open at 11pm and it all seemed nice enough.

We arrived around 9pm and the atmosphere in the place was totally different to lunchtime with a bar full of aggressive, angry looking and acting eastern European men accompanied by females who looked like they did most of their trade at night. When the men weren't eyeballing everyone else in the bar they seemed to spend the rest of their time going to the toilets in groups. Even the bar staff were totally different. The hostile atmosphere was so tense it felt like it was all about to kick off at any moment so we decided to leave at 11pm as none of us wanted to stay any longer.

We also decided to pay by cash as none of us wanted to hand over a credit card.

A Jackal and Hyde bar!

We used the upstairs for a work party and they really couldn't have done more for us - and it was free! We had platters on all of the tables which were great value and because we pre-ordered our drinks we got a really good discount. Building is historic and far better laid out like a pub than some of the pretentious local bars with minimalist furniture and snotty staff!

I just searched for this place on Google to get the number so I could call them and ask if my bag had been handed in, as I was in there last night and it disappeared during the course of the evening. From reading the reviews I stumbled across here and my experience last night, it seems like there's basically organised theft going on here, so I wont be going back. Wish I'd known this yesterday...

Why do they have a massive sign saying RESTAURANT NOW OPEN when it's always closed even during weekends???

This pub could be good had it's bouncers not been crooked and the bar staff ignorant.

Whilst in the club bit downstairs we noticed a lady hanging round us staring at our bags, then talking to the bouncer. Come the end of the night, we find out friends purse on the floor with everything gone, so we complain to the bar staff and manager and were accused of being liars and even though we found the purse in the middle of the dance floor when it was half empty, we were told there was no CCTV as it 'would take a million cameras to cover the whole bar'.

Rude, ignorant awful bar staff, and it looks as though the bouncers are in on the thieving act!

Will never go to this pub again!

Handed over my card to pay for food and drink. Later that night somebody tried to take 500 from my account at an ATM.

Agree with all negative feedback.

Was in there very recently....some considerate punter went through my jacket and robbed my mp3 player and also damaged my jacket....much liek what happened to Rob101 I notice. This is obviously not the first incident of this type in there and I am suspicious as to who is being let on premises seeing as the bouncers are not exactly "local".

Another crap Canary Wharf bar. Stupid bouncers (goes with the trade, really - give someone with no brains some power and you know what happens) - overpriced drinks, poor service, music so loud you can't have a conversation.

Am quite a regular at Via as we work close by and I can't believe the comments that have been written so far. This bar and staff are great! I held my birthday here and they gave us an area that they decorated for me (no charge) and treated us really really well (free round of drinks from the manager!). We book all our company events here now and have no complaints (it does get busy mind you when the sun shines, so get there early).
we also go in to the club on a Friday and are grateful the bouncers are selective.
Oh, and a few months ago my boss left his bag in the club with a laptop and blackberry in it and he got it back the next day.
Definitely the best bar in Canary Wharf

Great Bar. MY jacket was picked up by a member of staff while i was there and i had to go back the following day to retrieve it.

It was minus my I-Pod of course which they took the liberty of removing from my pocket. The matter is with the Police now. Avoid this kip.

Sort your door staff out!!
Turning people for no real reason!
Get some guys on the door who know the area!

whogaarden - 23 Feb 2008 01:36
Went on a Saturday night, full of drunk little kids barging you as they pass. The door staff not much better especially the African guy who insists on screaming&shouting at closing time. FFS we paid for the beer we're gonna drink it alright!

Most of my office leaving do's are held here - more's the pity. Over-priced, poor service, loud & full of posers drinking posey drinks. I wouldn't dare bring my husband here - he'd divorce me on the spot!

Great historical warehouse conversion, but very noisy and dingy.

I suppose the darkened corners and naff viking sofas in lurid colours are a nice distraction for the bland brightly lit Canary Wharf corporate offices, but it doesn't wash on the rest of us. I mean, yeah, you could say this place has character, but that's more too with the old dock building than what they've put in there. Drinks and food are overly priced, but expected for the area. More a place to go on a rainy winter day for a cosy sunday lunch than a drink filled party evening.

Awful, awful, awful. Dungeon-like, dingy and ridiculously expensive. Service is at a glacial pace and the music is so loud it makes your ears bleed. Go somewhere else. Really.

There used to be one of these in West Kensington. It didn't last long, (not much call for Roman Theme bars in that neck of the woods!)
Norealaleinorpington - 28 Mar 2007 16:17
Unremittingly awful.
BlindTiger - 28 Mar 2007 16:09
This pub has the most bizarre decor on the wharf, its like the whole place has been designed by Peter Stringfellow when he was in his zebra skin phase.

Other than that, standard factory drinking in the wharf, prices that would make your grandparents cry.
reverendlionelblair - 1 Jan 2006 22:19
What a place, great whenit's quiet, they tend to have enough staff then, other than that, they are short staffed, waiting times are long and you tend to be ignored.

Friday nights experience, was one not be re-lived, as the service was so poor, and the fact that they crush everyone in so tightly, you can't breathe.

place to party - NO! Try elsewhere!!
CW_Northerner - 16 Aug 2005 22:44
At the moment I work at Canary Wharf, and think that almost all of the pubs are grim- particularly on a Thursday and Friday night when all the bankers, lawyers etc. start getting lairy. There are few things as depressing as a bar full of posers trying to upstage one another.

Although to be fair, this pub is better than most of the others in the area as its got at least some character. but if you are heading in on a Thursday or Friday, don't go expecting to get a seat, or even find somewhere to stand without being constantly barged by posh drunks!
