user reviews of the Ship Victory, Chester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Local CAMRA branch applied to the Council for Asset of Community Value status to be applied in an attempt to afford the Ship Victory some protection. However, the Council was the owner of the premises and was disinclined to grant an ACV on a pub that they themselves wanted to demolish. An appeal to the Ombudsman yielded sympathy but no action in what transpired to be a classic case of "conflict of interests". Hang your heads in shame, Chester "Clowncil". :-(

So sorry to hear about the demise of this pub. Another one gone.

Sadly demolished.

Enjoy the spooks while u can, Mrs M! This historic old pub is destined to be bulldozed by Chester's greedy, twatbag Tory council.

My old good pub guide and pub crawl are less up to date than this site.

Mrs mappiman was delighted it was closed as it now looks like a spooky haunted house.

Closed.

Probably the friendliest pub in Chester. Always 2 real ales on, and many events during the week. The pub raises loads of money for charity.

A great friendly pub with a good selection of beers. Not what I expected being stood in the middle of a city car park. Worth the trip from London everytime.

i had a great nite on easter saturday when the regulars held a charity nite for charity
everyone was very friendly & the karaoke was of a very high standard
beer was cheap & well kept
whats not to like?

Went in there last week. A really friendly local boozer serving well kept beer. As well as the Tetleys they also had Weetwood Old Dog. Live music was provided by one of the locals on the piano. Not very busy, but you were made to feel welcome.

A large city centre car park has been built around this pub, and it has the appearance of being a little stranded in the middle of all the cars and open space. Despite it being Friday evening, we were the only customers throughout our entire visit. The furnishings are a bit dated. But this does have the feel of a community pub and I can only imagine it gets much busier later in the evening. In addition to cask Tetleys, Abbeydale Moonshine was the guest beer. Service was friendly. But after moving on from the packed Mill Hotel and Old Harkers Arms, the emptiness of this place came as quite a surprise. On the positive side, service was friendly and plenty of parking is available! But overall, there are far better pubs in Chester.

Bit surprised to be the first to post on this pub since December 2006.

The Ship Victory is a small traditional locals pub oddly situated in the corner of a large pay and display car park near the station and just off the ring road.

Notably, for a City Centre pub, it has the feel of a real community local - there's regular music nights and quiz evenings etc

Its a CAMRA friendly pub and has been a GBG regular recently.

I enjoyed a pint of Drummer Bitter from a local Cheshire micro on my recent visit. The other pump was serving Tetleys.

It seems to be a Manchester City supporters pub.

The beer range is too limited for this to be a "must visit" pub, but it's worthy of consideration in a city where real traditional local pubs seem thin on the ground

odd one this, it stands alone near a car park.A start pub, work you way throw the drink menu and when you has about ten pints then go on the train to Liverpool to start a good session, then at night come back to chester for one or two.

A great little pub, with a friendly atmosphere. If you stand at the bar with your drink, you'll be brought into the conversation as if you're there every night. Tuesday night is Acoustic Jam night, free entry, and, again, very friendly. Normally two hand pumps on: Tetley's and a quest. One of the few traditional pubs left in the city.

Bit of a dingy boozer, nothing special. When i was there there was some god-awful bloke singing, he looked like he was straight out of pensioner's holiday camp in the 1970s.
