Popped in for a pre-gig drink on a cold wet November evening and this was just the ticket. A cosy welcoming corner pub with a split bar and lounge and an nice rundown feel that is a good thing in my view. Decent Hobgoblin and Oxford Gold on tap and service was pleasant. Seems to be aimed for the students and there were some, all drunk and stupid but I wasn't deterred and won't be in future.

What a find !! I don't offen reach these parts and generally avoid the hostelrys when I do. Went here on recommendation though and am delighted I did. Haven't been made to feel so welcome in ages. Shall return for sure.

grew up in the area and remember this as one of the better pubs in the area, and quite often pop in when I'm in SE1, and I've had some good nights in here, though not recently, good to see RogerB has visited as it's rather tucked away off the beaten track

Nice enough. Came here on a Friday about 9ish and was pretty empty, just an odd smattering of office workers and locals. Not exactly friendly but not unfriendly either. Not a great selection of beers and some of those they had were off.

Haven't been in the UK since 1998 but I remember this place with great fondness. I never felt more at home in any establishment...not even here in my own city!

totally agree with all the comments already made.the pub itself is still the same the only difference is a lot less hanging baskets outside.interior still the same quirky style, locals still great, real ale was just starting to take off i.e. spitfire ruddles etc. there is a new manager in there now. nothing bad to say about this pub but am biassed ive just spent the last 6mths as its manager

There is little doubt that this is my favourite pub in an rather dour area for imbibing. From the outside it looks like a straightforward local but the quirky and slightly eccentric interior shows great imagination: a good balance between clutter and functional features. The 2 bars have copious amounts of bare wooden floors and stripped brickwork and the walls are laden with everything from clocks to candlesticks, barometers to brasses and a few lanterns, tin helmets and road signs thrown in for good measure. Lots of screens for sport: 4 screens (+ big screen) in the back bar and another 3 in the smaller front bar. Fruit machines in both bars and a dart board in the rear next to a tiny but equally interesting snug recess. Good service with tables being cleared and wiped as soon as anyone left. The only downside was beer selection. Of the 3 hand pumps, 2 were off and only the ubiquitous GK IPA was available. They advertise Guest beers and a few old pump clips were on display so perhaps it wasn’t my day. A pub well worth knowing about if in the area and the short walk to avoid the dreadful pubs near the repulsive Elephant & Castle complex is fully justified.

Quite a nice neighbourhood pub - ie the locals will notice you but in a friendly manner! Food average but beers are well kept. Good place to spend a lunchtime or an evening.

Great little pub for a quiet drink with a mate after work.
Often come here, the staff and locals friendly
Highly recommended

Good pub to while away a sunny afternoon outside, although outside seating is limited. Ale (London Pride and Bombadier) was well-kept and service good when I visited early on Friday evening.

Quality, old style pub with old style landlord. Nice to spend an evening.
