A bit out of the way, but worth a visit if you are near Hatfield and the A1. It is only 1/2 mile from the A1, but could be in deepest Hertfordshire for all the quiet. This was a " discovery" and I will have to give it a few more goes. Beers, as has been said, are Greene King and St. Austell. A friendly place.

Nice pub in a great location. The food is quite good and the portions are big. It would be a great place to visit if it wasn't for the rude and very unfriendly landlord and landlady.
The pub is advertised as dog friendly but they are not very welcome and if you have children with you it gets even worse. The landlord was outright rude and started to argue with his customers in front of the whole pub, staff and all could hear it. It was very embarrassing....for him. Never met such an arrogant person ever.
I will not go back until there is new management. Shame.

Nice pint of Tribute and my missus liked her wine. Nice beer garden amongst the fields. Looked busy for lunchtime trade although we didn't try anything.
Handy for bike riders too, being just off the Alban Way.

Another nice Hertfordshire pub in rural surroundings, that unfortunately lets itself down with its bog standard ale selection. Greene King IPA & Abbot, St Austell Tribute & Sharps Doom Bar was the selection. As stated previously, the landlord seemed quite friendly. A nice pub that could be so much better.

Yep have to agree a really lovely pub that looks like pubs did years ago before the chains and the food brigade moved in !! Very warm and convivial atmosphere with an interior that wouldn't look out of place in a dickens novel !

Having mentioned the food - our lunch was fabulous. price about right wouldn't say cheap, and good portions.

I had a couple of pints of Tribute which was absolutely spot on - could have drunk it all day ! One of the best pints I've had for a very long time !

Only thing that stops me awarding top marks is the rather miserable woman who 'greeted' us behind the bar - a smile would have been nice or maybe just a little less surliness. However landlord made up for it.

Nice pub - will go back !

A really nice pub: good value food and excellent beer in a rural location just minutes from the motorway - a really good stop.

Very welcoming: we were hardly inside before we felt like regulars.

Intrusive music was turned down promptly and politely.

I love the way that the bridle path strikes off straight as an arrow from the the Alban Way and deposits you virtually at the bar. With a little imagination our genial host (who truly is genial) could set up some kind of semaphore system at the junction so your pint is ready and waiting when you fall through the door...

Great place.

Fab little pub a little off the beaten track - real fire, wooden beams, full of character, horses outside in the fields. Food was good, possibly a little pricey. Love it!

Good Sunday Roast.

This is not my local, although I wish it was! For me, real ale is what a pub is all about. I have nothing but praise for the excellent condition of the ale during recent visits.

The pub is a little gem tucked away and traditional in character.

This is a good venue for the cyclist coming along Alban Way cycle path then across the field path from the old Smallford station. The good food and excellent ale are fitting rewards on arrival. Well worth a visit!

I used to drink in this pub on all too regular basis, I can still remember walking across the fields behind the pub, along the disused railway line home after a few too many! This has always been a good lub with a great clientele of locals and passers by. The atmosphere has always been good. Takemy advice, follow your nose off the A1(M), take the A412 and follow the signs off the road to the pub, you will not be dissapointed.

Visited this pub whilst cycling along the Alban Way. Warm and welcomingly busy even on a cold Sunday afternoon in February. We did not try the food, but there seemed to be lots of people who did. Choice of 3 well kept ales - Adnams, Abbot and Landlord. Locals were friendly, door held open for my girlfriend when bringing round back from the bar etc. Will be back!

Glad I've visited this place at last. Seems to be in the middle of nowhere, but is actually half a mile from the Hatfield Road. It's a comfortable pub with 3 ales (I enjoyed some spot-on Timothy Taylor Landlord), a cosy fire, board games, a slot machine and quiet music. I didn't stay for food this time, but it's available lunchtimes and evenings. Barstaff were welcoming and efficient.

A genuine old village pub down a narrow country lane to nowhere. Large open fire to welcome you plus a friendly landlord with a selection of well kept real ales. Home cooked meals available at a reasonable price.

great pub, found by us after a long walk along the Alban WAy (reached the pub by walking through a corn field). Very friendly staff, good range of ales, bags of character and good craic. Food wasn't as good as it could have been, though the kitchen had just opened for the evening. If they could improve the quality of the meals then this would get a 10/10.

A great pub, full of character, tucked away in Smallford and close to both Hatfield and St Albans. Thatched roof, open fire, friendly staff, real ales (Pride, Abbott & IPA), as well as a full range of other drinks. Great home cooked food served every lunch time as well as Friday/Saturday evenings - but book as it can get very busy. It should be great in summer as there is a big garden/pation and the new landlord is planning lots of barbeques!
