Went last week in that last big of Glorious October (?) weather. The garden outside and quite a good playground made it a good spot for a family lunch. Quiche salads were good, and the cheese baguettes were very generous. Side Pocket went down well. Overall will be very happy to come again. Only negative - some people who arrived after us were told that because a party of ten were booked in 30 minutes they couldn't order anything until they knew what the party wanted and therefore what was left over. So .. great news if you want to book for a party of ten, but quite surprising really, and would put me off getting there late in the day.

I'm not sure what some of the previous reviewers are on about. We came in one Saturday just before 4 pm, sure, food was not available, but we all had a packet of crisps each. All you have to do is ASK for them. My reason for visiting was because the pub has been listed in the Camra GBG for nearly 20 years now and I wanted to try some of their real ales. Four to choose from: Tring's Side Pocket, Oakham's Inferno, St Austell's Tribute and .........Young's Special. Oh well, three out of four 'aint bad. If you have not tried the 'Inferno' then make sure you do. It is absolutely gorgeous. If you like hoppy beer you'll love this. Should I get here before 2 pm next time I'll try and get some food - no harm in asking.

We went to this pub after passing it hundreds of times over the years and always promising to visit. The beer was good, not special but acceptable. The bar staff were surley, there was a huge sign begging for chefs and kitchen staff, not surprised they might have walked out. This is not a pretty village , it's a cut through to the M25 at London Colney and therefore attracts a very high amount of chav customers, young and middle aged.
The rear garden and eating area is grim to say the least
There was 5 of us and we sat in the sparse snug (no room in the cramped bar area , and 2 couples who were obviously regulars, and loudly debating the merits of the Sweeney, were clearly attempting to smoke without being spotted by the bar staff. Sadly this is as interesting as it gets. By all means try a pint...it's not bad but don't expect a welcome from the bar staff or the regulars.

This is a village pub and a fine one at that. It does not claim to be an all-day diner. If the kitchen was closed by the time you arrived, that is not a reason to mark the pub down. How was the beer? This site is BEERinthe evening. Take your wallet and your petulance to the nearest restaurant.

We were tempted by the high rating and a large board outside offering Sunday roasts. Unfortunately we arrived after 2.00pm when the kitchen closed.
I have enjoyed meals and drinks all over the world but this is the only country where I have not been offered an out of hours snack, a microwave or even sandwiches. Don't they want our custom? We were not even offered a packet of crisps. Maybe it was a bad day, certainly the staff had a sour look about them. It would be so nice to see the staff smiling, chatting to the customers and even providing a little service.
My only advice if you want to open your wallet and spend money, go elsewhere.

Went here for a meal today and can only say good things about this place. We were made to feel very very welcome, beer choice was great with four real ales on which were delicious! Lunch was top notch with hearty portions and perfectly cooked. I even had pudding as it looked os nice and this went down perfectly. Will definitely return.

Well run freehouse with 4 pumps - 1 permanently on Tring Sidepocket, remainder a variable selection which is sometimes uninspiring but always in good condition. Cosy in winter once they get round to lighting the fire. Far the best pub in the village.

Attractive and friendly pub. Well kept, reasonably priced(£2.70-£2.80) ales usually including a Tring beer and one from further afield.Had a cheese melt baguette which was ok but not great.Clearly popular with the locals.Has a nice garden for summer drinking.

Nice pub & I believe the beer is good. But was disappointed with the food. We had cheesy baguettes - I had the Hawaiian one which I thought was overpriced for what you got (pineapple was only just there & only 1 thin slice of ham). Also didn't help that it was only just lukewarm. Might have tasted better if it had been hot.

Pleasant enough kind of three roomed pub. The Frothingham Best ( I assume to be a guest beer) was very nice and went down well. If coming by car a 4 x 4 would be an advantage to negotiate entry to the car park.

Lovely pub, spoiled by all the ar5ena1 stuff on the wall

Friendly, unspoilt pub with good beers. Nice one.

Based on a single chance visit last month, I concur with the general opinions below. The pub offers a good range of mainly local cask ales (those which I managed to sample were kept well), and it is clearly a popular destination for foodies. Sadly, the kitchen had literally just closed when we arrived, so were thwarted in our attempt to sample the victuals - but from what I could see on others' plates it all looked like hearty, tasty fare. Well worth a visit, but beware it can be a victim of its own success during busy periods - you may struggle for seating on a wet day when the garden isn't useable.

Great pub, great beers in reallly good condition, very freindly staff, excellent pub grub on friday evenings and a lovely kids play area outside.

Ok but prefer the colney fox. Took ages to get food in the summer, actually we were asked to go and get our own food...service hmmm

Four pumps dispense a changing selection of (usually) interesting ales. Quality consistently high. Bit cramped at busy periods, but the place has some character. One of the best in the area.
