user reviews of the Redback, Acton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Aeronaut is well worth a visit! A large pub with several side rooms and attractions - including a couple of table tennis tables - and a large beer garden. The Laines brewery is behind the bar and was in use during our visit..

5 beers on yesterday all at £3 a pint. Great staff and service although it wasn't over busy.
cheshirecat - 11 Aug 2015 08:23
The Aeronaut is a reasonably new brew pub with Laines ales brewed on the premises. There was a limited selection on our visit - The Stinger, Best, IPA & ESB. Westons Wyld Wood was the real cider. The attached circus room is a fairly unique attraction. We could see in. But there was no event during our Good Friday afternoon visit. In fact, the pub was fairly quiet overall.
blue_scrumpy - 8 Apr 2015 18:37
The Redback closed some while ago. It briefly became the Acton Arms but for some reason that failed before it got properly started. Which is a bit of a shame because it showed promise.

It's now "The Aeronaut" Opened about a week ago (around the 5th Nov) and it also shows promise. Service was a bit chaotic (barman had trouble persuading the computer to take a food order) but I assume that will settle. The beers seem to be from Laines, a Brighton microbrewery but I think the plan is to have a microbrewery on site. There are certainly tanks and such behind the bar. On Saturday the Best was OK but tasted slightly of something I didn't recognise and didn't appreciate. Nothing wrong, just not to my taste. There was a golden ale I liked rather more.

when this pub reopens does anyone know if it will be open during the day, i would like to make it my local if it does
formworker123 - 15 Jul 2012 16:34
A quick note to say that The former Redback will be opening at the end of July under the new name, The Acton Arms.
mikeantic - 2 Jul 2012 17:15
I think i had some good memories of this place. Especially looking up at the ceiling to see the old Gin Palace sign.
Had some great bands and a good atmosphere.

God knows what it is like now though as I haven't been for years but am sure it hasn't changed much.
Worth considering buying a pint of whatever beer they have and throwing it over yourself immediately to save time later while trying to manoeuvre your way around the place.
papamike - 30 Jun 2011 19:50
Too many antipodean dicks on the dancefloor. Avoid unless you want some filthy animal grinding his dirty crotch on your bottom. Very popular with slappers.
Chav__man - 14 Jan 2011 11:41
Ok I have something to say regarding the comments on this place.

Candyflossweetness - What was your 15 year old neice doing queing up to get into Redback anyway late at night? Surely rather than commenting on this site you should have a word with the people you should be blaming..her parents! I am sure she was probably caked up with make up, with her mates looking older than she actually is anyway. You can not blame Redback, it's not as if they forced her to go in there.

Jayhemera - You are an absolute clown, I am English and I have going to the Redback for years and love it. We English do like to enjoy ourselves it's not only Aussies and Saffa's who go there. fool!

If you want a place you can have a laugh with mates, with cheap drinks and great bands this is a cool place.
ritchiee - 13 Aug 2010 17:34
I dont know why so many people are slating this place so much. At the end of the day what you get is what you expect. If you dont like going to dirty, dark places where the majority of the crowd drink snakebite then its simple. Just dont go! ! !

As for myself, I went the other week and had a good laugh and a serious hangover the following day. The only downside was trying to get bright purple snakebite stains out of a light pair of shorts.

Will definitely go back! ! !
BeerGutt - 11 Jul 2010 09:08
i must add however the band were good. they got one thing right. still wont be going back until there is one hellov an industrial strength clean up.
yorkshirebelle - 17 Jun 2010 23:07
People who moan about this pub are either english or european and have no idea about having a good time. I have seen these people in there standing around like a lost mullet with there jaw dropping down as they have seen how people enjoy themselves like this before . .

Stay away and good riddance to ya.
jayhemera - 26 Feb 2010 15:47
I was in the Redback last Saturday and had a great time...........the only problem I had was I must have picked gay night to visit.............please tell me this isn't gonna become another gay bar
ilovelotsofbeer - 9 Dec 2009 15:54
My mates in Acton always called this place 'The Slippery Red Crack'.....
Now I know why.
RAGING_ALCOHOLIC - 7 Jul 2009 09:17
The sooner this place gets hit by lightning and razed to the ground the better. I can't think of anything that would make this place worse, nor can I understand how it retains its licence. Horrible.
Semence - 28 May 2009 10:33
I certainly agree that you need to be well oiled to venture in here. The only times Ive found myself in here have been after a Brentford game where the drinking started at midday and the rational decision making flew out of the window early evening.

This place is full of people that I dont want to know and Ill surely never return, will I?
Strongers - 9 Apr 2009 06:56
I've been in a few times now. I found the door people to be decent and had a very good time. Obviously you can't turn up wasted looking hammered. It's a good natured crowd, sure a few piss head have to be escourted off the premises. Serves them right. All the people in here have a good laugh on a night out and prices are reasonable. Best for Friday night after drinks party. Cover bands are vey enjoyable to watch and you can yell as high as your voice will take you :)
sample_some - 28 Mar 2009 18:43
this is a dodgy place, full of sleazy and ugly men who are only after one thing! plus the bouncers are rough animals, never again will i set foot into this place!
catatonia55 - 25 Aug 2008 21:20
Not bad if you're pissed out your head, otherwise stay clear.

Bouncers not fond of civilised conversation, but prefer mindless violence, especially when numbers are in their favour.
SF1986 - 21 Apr 2008 01:10
Unfortunately I went to this place last week. The pub is an absolute disgrace. Full of some of the most disgusting, foul mouthed and ugly people. And most of them are kiwis and aussies. I guess in NZ and Australia these sorts of pubs must be the norm. I saw one guy taking a crp into a pint glass. The toilets were blocked so he had due cause.
Chav__man - 10 Apr 2008 13:13
i have friends that love this place and friends that hate it, the good points would be the 3 bars and good live music. the downside is how packed it gets around 1:30AM on a friday night...the bouncers are also a bunch of c*nts
_GoodTime_ - 29 Jan 2008 14:10
Used to love it, now I wish it burns :D
Muse_Luver - 17 Oct 2007 14:45
had some aussies go there in a taxi,CHARGED THEM DOUBLE
anonymous - 12 Oct 2007 10:50
If you ain't in here by 10pm, don't bother... you'll most likely be pocketed in someone's sweaty armpit for the duration of the night!!

Otherwise, a great night out, if you and your party are there enough to reserve a table!
CheekyShepherd - 7 Jun 2007 17:32
Hey Im in aussieland and I have heard of this pub! Cant be all that bad now. Im moving over in 6 weeks and you may see me behind the bar lol.
Rachael84 - 12 Mar 2007 06:53
I'll only give it a one because the band was good. But the bouncers - absolute pigs!! They treat you like a piece of shite and they seem to love it! Soo offputting none of my friends will be going back there unless the management do something about it!! As The Church afterparty it's a horrible, horrible place!! Much prefer Walkabout in Shepherd's Bush over that hellhole!
pollon - 29 Jan 2007 10:48
Out in Australia at present and met a guy called Michael who lived in Acton and used to drink in here all the time - not much, but when me and my mates come here every month for a good old piss up thats sweet!!!!

GREAT PUB!!!!!!
Noel_Gallagher - 30 Nov 2006 04:44
Surely the most famous pub in London for Australians and like-minded backpacker-types. Everyone else steer well clear.
mswh - 7 Oct 2006 23:25
Oi..I'm an Essex boy & so is my mate, the redback rocks!

Old shoes & no morals are the key to enjoying what is West London's best Antipodean bar.

BeerGuru - 6 Oct 2006 18:16
An antipodean bar for everybody. Dont go if you dont like antipodeans, and dont wear your good clothes. Kinda like glasto then!
foxinsox - 8 Sep 2006 07:25
Went to this place last night and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised at how GOOD it was!!

It was very packed but this is what made the atmosphere so good...

The live band were brilliant- singing all the rock classics (U2, Bon Jovi...) and singing new indie/rock songs such as The Ordinary Boys and Franz Ferdinand... Lots of sing-a-long moments (or shout along should I say!)

Diverse groups of people believe it or not, and all very friendly- I saw no fights or arguments! Many many people dancing and singing... Yes, lots of aussies, but the band made it clear that it wasnt just australians in the bar when they shouted "Who in here is from..." and listed many countries and there was a response from all of them...

After the band there was house music being played followed by R`n`B/ pop/chart music, so this place really convers everyone`s taste in music!

anonymous - 20 Aug 2006 15:03
After reading a few reviews on this site one would think that the management of this venue would have addressed the serious aggression asserted by the bouncers - although nothing happened to me, I had seen enough to agree that one day there is going to be a serious incident.
My advice to customers is stay well clear of this venue as a result, as you may be the next incident - which is such a pity as the venue has potential and the live band was very good!

anonymous - 18 Jul 2006 03:01
A lot of the reviews comment negatively on the bouncers here.

To be honest they're some of the best I've seen in London. There's a lot of them there, they stop any trouble quickly. If you're too drunk, generally, you won't be let in or you will be chucked out quickly. If you'r causing hassle, be you male or female, you will be chucked out. Occasionally the bouncer will chuck the other party out with the trouble maker but innocents are generally left back in, much depends obviously on how drunk you are

The reddy is messy, and full of antipodeans, shock horror, quel surprise. A lot of the reviews seem to be fixated on this as a negative. Well don't bloody go to an antipodean pub then!

A lot of the reviews commenting on the aggressive atmosphere etc. I don't get this. I've been going for about 5 years and never had any trouble there.

I rate the redback as great for a big night out on the beers with friends, don't go too often and never go in good shoes.

Basically the Redback does exactly what it says on the tin, it's a place to go with friends, have some beers, listen to a decent (if predictable) playlist from the usually good bands and dj's and maybe chat someone up. The talent is always good, frequently outstanding.

As another reviwer pointed out, it's not a place to go if you're not willing to let your hair down and have a laugh.

Different bars a for different purposes is my mantra.

If you with the intention of having a laugh with friends, it's a nine

If you go with the intention of standing in the corner, and complaining how unruly, unwinebar and unreserved the atmosphere is, you'd rate it a 3 but you're the bigger eejit for having gone there to begin with

Essex boys need not apply.
spudsi - 15 May 2006 16:57
What is management doing to this place?Lets get some decent music back in here.East of Java have to play here more regularly.Another fantastic band is Undiscovered, they play the same great music as Java only better.Saw them at the Brook house in Hayes last week & the place was rocking.Come on management lets have the old Redback back.
daimler - 2 May 2006 13:20
Unbelievably bad bouncers, expensive drinks, expensive to get in, bad music, bad sound system, unpleasant crowd, dirty, very little seating, smokey. An embarassment to the city, its popularity is a mystery.
anonymous - 23 Mar 2006 12:50
This is a pub for the NZ version of our chav. The roughest, most uncultured and poorest antipodeans can be found here, especially on a Sunday. I saw a girl going for a dump in a pint glass here. And the guys here are seem as if though they have not evolved from neanderthal man.
Chav_man - 17 Mar 2006 16:41
This pub is crap, it is full of ex colonials whingeing about how bad the UK is. The drinks promotions are good, but encourage young lads, who can't hold their beer to get wasted. I got knocked a few times. If your skint drink in this pub, otherwise give it a wide birth.
bryan - 7 Mar 2006 16:30
Oz band UNSAFE PASSAGE back once again at the Redback on Sunday 5th Feb 2006 from 6pm.
ladyjaneg - 2 Feb 2006 12:13
This is awful full of young and old male perverts who ply loose women with drink and take them home for a 3 second night of passion. Its a place where travelling women can get lots of loving then go back home as inoccent virginal ladies..... people please come here if you have no confidence with the ladies without being out of your head....
sadie - 1 Dec 2005 16:36
Absolute favourite of mine to be honest. First place I ever had a snake bite ! Red all down my shirt...
Great staff.. great laugh and great bands..

zazu62 - 26 Oct 2005 14:36
some aussies girls brought me there oneday..was a sunday... they had a Barbicue out in the backgarden...which was free :O

i didnt eat it so..cant tell u how it tasted...

once it got dark...everyone was inside...the music would switch from DJ to Band...every hour i think...

there was so good lookin girls there (which is usual...Ozzie, Kiwi n safa girls usually are)

its not as messy as The Walkabout in Shepherds bush... but i did get a few knocks...which spillt some drinks.. aslong as u dont mind about the safety of ur outfit...

bouncers were fine...friendly firm and fair...

rate 7.10
TyGa - 26 Oct 2005 14:30
No whingeing Poms telling us how good their Ashes win was. Full of good Kiwis and Aussies. Good atmosphere, good bands. Will happily head back next time.
anonymous - 17 Oct 2005 17:56
This place is Feral with a capital F , nothing like pubs back home. might be ok for aussies and saffas but then again this is about the best they deserve. Came 12000 miles to meet aussies? i think not. stick to good local pubs where you can experience the uk.
kiwiphil - 10 Oct 2005 18:46
Everytime I have ever come here (which is a lot) someone has picked up my drink and tried to run off with it. UGH But that is a small price to pay for the absolutely superb bands that play live here.
bub - 10 Oct 2005 17:40
Aussie dump that brings out the jingositic side in the most placid of people. Why don't they all just sod off back to Oz? See?
davecamden - 3 Oct 2005 12:08
Full of Southern Hemisphere backpackers getting shitfaced. Don't wear clothes you don't mind getting ruined - it's a great place if you like that kind of mayhem in a bar...
lwk198 - 25 Sep 2005 22:27
Not bad if you want that "at home in Aussie or NZ" feel. If you like people watching this is your thing. Beer in plastic glasses was a shame but made up by the drinks specials.......hmmmm. Band on the night I went was average at time, horrid at others but all up a good night. Open nice and late too. None of this 11pm business.
Randy_Campbell - 18 Jul 2005 16:24
Went there on Saturday, great atmosphere, great Live music & lots of SB&B. Can't wait until the next time.
BeerGuru - 17 May 2005 11:16
Excellent my a**e. Full of Aussie and South African versions of chavs.
anonymous - 14 May 2005 20:40
This is an exelent pub Me and my friends go there every weekend, the only thing that we think would make the pub even more great is if you start taking photos of the people that lovr your pub so mush and post them om you website. That would be GREAT!!!!
anonymous - 14 May 2005 14:10
An awesome antipodean pub full of young people up for a great time. Wide range of Beers and RTD's, and great live bands on Thurs/Fri/Sat nights. The perfect place for a huge night with mates and great prospect for a "drought breaker"! Ive spent a lot of time here and apart from having to get there early (before 10) to avoid a big queue its well worth a shot.
Robox - 5 May 2005 11:56
Had many a fun night there, but it can get a bit messy, good laugh tho, just make sure you have ya dancing trousers on !!!!!
ChelseaLes - 3 Mar 2005 12:46
Great place, great service, great fun. Bit of a meat market but that adds to the atmosphere. Not for the faint-hearted.
kieran - 8 Dec 2004 13:41
Comes into its own in the summertime, or whenever they open the sandpit up. Don't go if tee-total, and don't go if you value your footwear. The bouncers can be either thoroughly decent, or totally lacking in initiative.
Don't wear white. It will be stained with blackcurrenty streaks by the blurred, shambolic peak of the evening.
The one place you should go drinking in Acton. Even if it is only once.
anonymous - 26 Nov 2004 13:41
Legendary place - laid back atmosphere, great bands, people up for a laugh. But don't go in wearing your best shoes or trousers that touch the ground or they'll soak up at least 4 pints of beer from the floor.
Dan - 29 Oct 2004 13:13
this bar is a drunken mess, people falling over, drunken boys groping you as you walk past, slippery muddy floor...its hot adn sweaty ...go to the puzzle bar 5mns up the road...unless your happy to be gropped like a piece of cheap meat!
casper - 12 Oct 2004 14:54
Lively place, nice staff, cool live band, bouncers seem ok too... top place for a cheap boozy madden!
Krispy - 13 Jul 2004 15:34
cool bar, nice girls, great atmosphere. Has a dance floor, a cool live band on a sunday. Best place go if you want a mix of a club/bar.
Ace - 8 Jul 2004 00:42
If yer up for a laugh, go there with a few friends. The totty behind the bar is top notch. Don't go if yer a boring bas*ard. One of the best pubs for a live band sunday afternoon
ruairi - 24 May 2004 07:27
Not good, point below about stay out if you dislike Antipodeans etc. Its not about that its just a ruff shithole, have been to plenty of other "Antipodean" bars that don't have this aggressive atmosphere. AVOID!
matthew - 26 Mar 2004 13:13
The best bar in town on a Thursday and Sunday night! Recommended for those who can handle the 6-10pm one pound drink specials!!! Thanks to Alex and the Looney Tunes for many a boozey night!!
Becs - 20 Mar 2004 03:40
SUM says - my mate's a regular and i went there for the first time at the end of 03's gloriously hot summer. The cheap bottled beer was foul but that was the only downside, the live band, staff and atmosphere was excellent - I shall return.
SUM - 20 Feb 2004 19:30
been back in aussie for a while now and still miss the good old days at the reddy in my greenscene top. thanks red for taking us pissed yobbos home in the bus very weekend. top pub to go to with a bunch of mates
chris vm - 14 Feb 2004 06:18
I love the place, best Snakebites in London. Everytime I go there I have a fantastic time, friendly (loving) atmosphere. Security are quick to act if it gets a little rough. Great music....LOVE IT!!!
Goothi - 13 Feb 2004 16:25
Well What can I say, The Reddie, I was taken there by a local, introduced to the manager, Alex! Hes the man, Top Host in London! Its awesome to see plenty maori comfortable there. If you are looking for a good time, It the reddie. The staff are sweet. To Alex and staff, When I come bro! Its party hearty this time. NZ is cool...for the retiring and into the slow life buzz people. Ill be Back! Redback is the house. Thursday,Friday,Saturday or Sunday as a hangover saver. Keep kool!
maoritrooper - 5 Feb 2004 09:55
I like the place... Could do with less yobs on Thurs/ Fri, but for the most part people are content to get wasted, fall down, get up again & carry on without interfering too much with anyone else. Any trouble is swiftly shut down and the booze is cheap. Could do with more specials on Gold Tequila!!! Keep it up guys!
KickStart - 21 Jan 2004 11:36
Love the place, good team running it, good team working the bar & great team on the door. The only time the bouncers may be seen to be unpleasant is when you are being a prick & ruining the place for anyone else.
The live bands are mostly good, teh booze is usually cold, the service is excellent under the circumstances and the antipodeans have a fantastic vibe.
Sadly of late, too many Northern hemisphere people are coming in with their aggression, attitude problems and laddish behaviour, which has destroyed my will to be there on Friday or Saturday nights. Thursdays are still tolerable & Sundays are a good day out.

N. hemisphere ppl, stay out if you:
A. Have a chip on your shoulders about the bloody (aussies/kiwis/saffas),
B. Have an issue with foreigners,
C. Are aggressive, especially when drunk,
D. Are a lad, wide boy, yardie, skin, etc.
E. Aren't out for a fun time of drinking, dancing & relaxing.

We don't need any more of your type here. We like our pub, our people and our way of having fun. If you don't, stop coming to the Reddie. You're not going to change it and no-one wants your type about.

Be sad to have to close the place off to "non-members"
You're ruining our fun - 21 Jan 2004 10:37
Was there last night, great band, bit of a dive but most packed place anywhere on a sunday afternoon/evening. Some nice totty too.
Richard - 15 Dec 2003 09:40
Best of memories.
The worst of Hangovers.
But would go back for more.
Mark Pearson - 17 Nov 2003 03:57
Fun atmoshere and a good laugh. Great bands, drink specials and free BBQ on Sundays. Be prepared to get very drunk and don't wear your best shoes as they will get dirty.
Dan - 29 Sep 2003 10:55
How has this hole not been closed down, right next to the police station..how very strange.

Dirty, smelly, takes ages to get served with mostly Antipodean crowd but hey that's cool.

It's the bouncers that need locking up...recruited straight from the South African police (pre-Apartheid) - they are very dangerous...

The only good thing about this place is the bands, excellent.

So, avoid like the plague unless you like danger and a possibility of death and injury.
anonymous - 15 Sep 2003 14:35
Had our footy team piss up here once and it was a great laugh. Apart from my when my Mrs went spastic when some local sort started chatting me up! Hot and sweaty but good fun and not too expensive. Get there early at weekends to avoid queues to get cos it's open late.
chopperbomb - 17 Jul 2003 17:31
Sunday's is the best, free meals and specials on drinks. Bad thing, you have to stand in long ques for your meals!
sammy - 29 Jun 2003 00:08
The place is perfect for young aussies, saffa and kiwi's but be careful of the bouncers if you try to sneaak in the fire exist at the back. They sometimes only let girls in, after certain times!
sammy - 28 Jun 2003 23:44
If you're young and you don't mind noise come here, if your single you should be able to pull as there is enough to go around. Don't go for a quite drink or if you want to have a conversation, probably off limits to over 30s really. Basically a Aussie Saffa drinking den and alkl that means.
arturo_morales - 25 Mar 2003 16:44
