user reviews of the Griffin, Claygate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Uninteresting selection of 3 ales on offer, but served with a smile, and the bar tender even came and cleaned down our table without being asked. Definitely worth a visit as part of a village pub crawl.

Four.one's review is somewhat wide of the mark. First of all Mondays are their 'day off' and whilst the kitchens have a limited menu that day they are closed in the evening. If the service was slightly slow then it would be worth popping in there on another day when they are really geared up to serve lunch and dinner. Youngs Ordinary at 3 pp is less expensive here than all the other local hostelleries. Food is made to order, not pre-made and left to sit, so you get what you pay for and you should be happy to pay for what you get! The Harrington family serve the best beer in the area, their standards are reflected in the very hard working landlord&landlady and some of the prettiest bar staff that you will ever encounter. The chef is Danny, and his food is earning The Griffin an unrivalled reputation in the area, and beyond. Passing_By's comments aren't really quite true either, the average age in the Public Bar is probably around 30, and the Saloon Bar and the garden have a wide range of clientele. The bars both have Sky TV for Sports fans, although the Public Bar is usually where the action is on that front. The Saloon Bar is lower profile and only on major Rugby days does the TV come into play there.

Nearly nine quid for a ham and cheese sandwich and a pint of Youngs Ordinary is making this establishment pricey. Also had to wait the best part of 45 minutes to be served when ordering at 2.15pm on a Monday afternoon. Why does it take that long to make a sarnie?

Great pub. In a bit of an urban setting, but has a real cozy feel inside. Paving slabs on one side of the bar, carpet on the other. Quite a few tables outside but they're by a (quiet) road.
London pride, Youngs and Adnams regatta on pump, all pretty good. Excellent, cheap food but we had to wait quite a while for it.

Definitely a pub for older people in particular.

Excellent pub with very good food, well kept ales and friendly locals.

My mother and I discovered this pub last week having lived in Claygate for just over 1 year - we wish we'd found it sooner ! We had a lovely lunch, my mother having the beer battered tiger prawns which were huge and I had the 'Old spot ham egg and chips' - absolutely delicious ham which we were told comes from the local butcher 'The Gamelarder' in Claygate. So nice to sit in a warm cosy pub with roaring log fire surrounded by friendly locals.
Such a difference to the draughty old Hare and Hounds with it's awful music blaring out of each speaker behind you.
In our opinion this is definitely the best pub in Claygate.

We had a sunday roast here which was excellent, had to wait a while but it was worth it. Highly recommended.

Pride, Deuchars and Ordinary. I think they sometimes have another ale but not when we were there. Separate small public bar. Sat outside and it was pleasant enough. Beer was average.

Had a family lunch last saturday, had to wait a while for food, some problems in the kitchen, as a good will we had desserts on the house. Nice village pub and serve good food.

I popped in today (Sunday afternoon) for a swift one. Buzzing pub with London Pride and Hook Norton Hooky Gold, both in good condition. Nice local.

A good Fullers pub which also had Surrey Hills Ranmore Ale, a very nice beer for a warm evening when you don't want anything too malty.

Have nicked named this pub 'The Wicker Man'. When you go in at a quiet time, the locals at the bar turn round and stare at you - haven't been abducted and burnt yet - so probably okay............. Despite the Pride is good.

I visit this pub, or used to, every year or so, when visiting relatives in the area. It is tragic to see how a once friendly, family pub has fallen victim to big screen Sky tv, loud music, and chavs. The two distinct bars are a good idea, but not when the music(?)is so loud that it can't be avoided in the lounge bar. The outdoor smoking umbrella was down because it was too windy. The public bar chavs were outside indulging in a screaming and swearing contest. The once good fresh cod is now 'freshly battered cod', which I imagine to be frozen cod with 'fresh' batter; at 10+ I could have got two such meals in a chippie, and probably of much better quality. The beer was tired(Young's). The visit won't be repeated. A great shame.

ps Is there some accounting reason that you can only get 20 cash with your debit card?

Cracking pub. Former Surrey CAMRA Pub of the Year (not long ago), so you know you're going to get a really good pint - had a cracking pint of Oakham's JHB in here once. Probably the 2nd best pint I've ever had. Room to the right has the tele for the sport, one to the left is a lounge type room straight out of the 60s/70s. Classic. Two rooms completely separate so you can sit, chat and sup in the lounge without being bothered by the sport. Check out the old brewery windows - these should be listed. With here, the Foley Arms and the very different Hare and Hounds, Claygate has got some decent pubs.

A pub where people talk to each other rather than a grab-a-drink-down-it-quick-move-on-to-a-club kind of pub. I like places like this
Will2 - 20 Aug 2006 22:55
This has the feeling of a very tradional pub, a nice enough atmosphere
aleman - 19 Aug 2006 10:14
You expect a pub in Claygate to be a bit pretentious, even slightly snobby, a la Oxshott. Thankfully this isn't. What you get is a traditional two-bar side-street local, clearly held in some affection by the regulars, even the mean-looking dog is very well behaved. And the girl behind the bar was excellent (serving 3 at a time at one stage, well done!)

One note though. A previous, anonymous, contributor describes the "unspoilt surroundings", which of course actually means "in need of redocoration". I'm all for pubs having character, and, let's face it, we don't all want an Ember Inn on every corner. But surely a lick of paint wouldn't do any harm.

A decent, honest, English pub.

Very friendly Pub, great Guiness, superb atmos[here for Rugby on Large 57" Screen, Food wholesome all round a good local
feefarm253 - 24 Mar 2006 18:25
A proper pub this where you can go and drink excellent English Ale in unspoilt surroundings. Each to their own of course but pubs like this are a dying breed and with them dies part of our heritage.

A good little boozer tucked away in a quiet side street. Can be alarmingly quiet at certain times of day such as lunchtime. But always serves an excellent pint of London Pride. A good place for watching sport on the big screen in the public bar. If you are looking for a quiet local, try this.

Nice little boozer
