user reviews of the Mash Tun, Brighton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Not unfriendly and full of undergraduates who think that only Bob Dylan or Che Guevera really know what it's like to be misunderstood and have bourgeois parents who live in Reigate.

Any which way it's decent and atmospheric enough of an evening.

Good pit-stop for a pre-theatre drink in the early evening but got very busy with clubber types pre-loading later. Nothing wrong with that though, everyone very friendly. Rather tatty inside, but good efficient service for such a heaving place. I should imagine it feels a different place entirely earlier in the day.

Agreeable somewhat student-orientated pub. Quick service, reasonable beers and the prices are ok for the area. Worth stopping by for a pint if you are in the area, but probably not the kind of place you'd want to spend the whole evening in for some reason that I couldn't quite put my finger on.

This pub is ok, its location is convenient. It gets too crowded so only good on a sunny day when you can sit outside. There are much better pubs to be found in Brighton though like The Basketmakers Arms, Hop Poles, Shakespeare's Head, Barley Mow...

Why is moonmonk so offended by "cool" people (see his other reviews). The staff in here have been nothing but friendly considering their work load on weekend evenings. Not a great pub though, plastic cups and very tired looking. Standard range of drinks, nothing special. Ok if your out with workmates but anything more intimate, steer clear.

This pub used to be okay, but is sadly a victim of its own success. Now, they have really arrogant staff that have unneccesarily inflated opinions of themselves. The beer is okay, but they have decided that it'd be a good idea to stop their happy hour and introduce discounts for STUDENTS ONLY !!!!! Does this pub really want to attract only students and discourage normal people from visiting ???? If so its a shame because it used to be quite nice to have a drink outside. Dont bother drinking inside; its dark and dirty, and the toilets are horrible. Its only plus these days is the location and outside area for people watching. Good pub - gone bad.....

This place is ok, but if you want decent beer, staff, atmosphere, music, etc., etc., go to Fitsherberts next door.

Dirty, with staff too cool for school, but in a great location, an outside area in the sunshine. Bad food though and if you are there in the night time, BEWARE. They will call last orders and serve you, they will call time and then you will HAVE to leave within 2 minutes.. with full pints or not. They do not care. This week with friends from out of town we were chucked out with full pints less than 2 minutes after time was called.. pitying looks were given as explanation.

I love this pub on a weekend night, lovely atmosphere and perfectly suited to students. However I went there for a sunday roast today and has to be said this is the worst roast I have ever encountered (even worse than mine, and my cooking skills are pretty horific) Meat a little cold and didnt seem to have been roasted at all, soggy - boiling veg and watery gravy. Lovely to drink in just avoid the food!

Rather dirty and expensive, feels more like you would imagine a trip to the local unemployment centre, went over the road to the wagon and horses and had a fab drink at a more reasonble price, got chatting to loads of new people. Wont bother going back to the Mash Tun again

Small very crowded pub, decent range of Lagers always enjoy visiting this place.

Bloody noisy, bloody crowded. Suits students and when you want a big party (finished my 29th in there).

Only go when that's all you want tho :)

I like this place - its rough round the edges and that's part of the charm. The staff are always friendly and the breakfasts are a treat. It can get busy quickly, so if you like a bit of space then best to go during the day on a weekend.

Expensive, over-crowded student pub. Cross over the road to the Waggon & Horses, the beer is cheaper and it has a much friendlier atmosphere. The landlady won't put up with under-age drinkers either,

what can i say its a student pub.. like all other mash tunns i have been too. beer is not bad but a bit pricey. just watch out for the dirty old men hanging around eyeing up the 18yr old girls in short skirts. lol

Tends to have eye candy behind the bar & often in the bar!
Plenty of character, but is small, so the atmosphere is very much dependant upon the crowd you get in there - the regular crowd are a good bunch, but only takes 1 largish group to take over somewhat...

Not cheap...

A regular haunt of the comedians performing at the komedia, or during the Paramount festival.

Very expensive for a student pub yet allways busy. Not keen myself but obviously plenty of others are.

Studenty sort of pub. No beer, lots of lager and quite nice food. If you're young, free and single you might like it.
