user reviews of the George, Staines

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After an initial stop in the nearby Caffe Gusto (not listed on BITE), we continued a short midweek crawl in Staines at the George. I don't think I've ever seen the George empty. It also seems to be busy, without getting overcrowded. The ale selection on this Wednesday evening visit was Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, Sharp's Doom Bar, Park Isabella, Cronx Kitchen, Windsor & Eton Sloe Stout, Portobello Hedgerow Pale, Three Sods Session IPA, Redemption EXPA & Hogs Back TEA. There appeared to be some kind of London beer festival on. Ciders were Weston's Old Rosie & Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon. On this occasion, CAMRA vouchers were accepted in this branch and service was quick and with a smile. A much better visit than previous ones. Probably still the best place for a decent ale selection in Staines.

In a morose kind of way, I almost miss Arsenal Fan...
realalerules1983 - 6 Oct 2016 21:01
After a poor experience in the London Stone, I didn't fair much better in the George. Apparently this branch of Wetherspoons is the only one in the country (to my knowledge) to only accept CAMRA vouchers when there is a festival on! Or was it the fact that the barman didn't know how to work the tills and was too arrogant to seek help. Either way, Wetherspoons need to decide whether they will offer discounts or not. Ales were Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, Sharps Doom Bar, Hogsback Tea, Binghams Marynka, Adnams Oyster Stout, Reunion Opening Gambit & Weltons Equinox. Ciders were Old Rosie & The Hogfather. It was busy as usual in here, both upstairs and downstairs. But this really is a pretty average (or lower than average) 'spoons. Yet another complaint to Tim Martin forthcoming.
blue_scrumpy - 18 Apr 2016 18:46
A re-visit to this town centre Wetherspoon’s on a Tuesday night in early February for pre football drinks.

Around 6.15pm when I arrived and the downstairs was pretty busy with only 1 or 2 spare tables. My pals were sat upstairs on their own, the upstairs bar was not open so the only people going up there were using the toilets.

A good choice of ales on the taps, I had a couple of pints of Twickenham’s Summer Down Under @ 3.9% which was very drinkable.

The George is an older style ‘spoons with what seems to be a very loyal clientele, definitely worth a visit especially as the rest of Staines Town Centre is pretty devoid of pubs selling real ale.

lezford - 7 Mar 2016 13:11
I visited this spacious branch of Wetherspoons on Staines High Street on Sat. 12 December 2015. The beer (Adnam's Shingle Shells) and food I had were both good, and the service was fast and friendly.
beermann - 14 Dec 2015 15:11
Visited a couple of times when work has taken me to Staines.

Last time I went was on a Wednesday lunchtime to meet a mate. Upon entering the pub I felt that I had just walked into Gods waiting room. I know most Spoons are a magnet for the wrinkles but this was something else.

Whilst down stairs was heaving with aforementioned, upstairs was fairly empty and quite nice and airy. Possibly because there was no stairlift gritted. My mate had a burger which he said was quite decent. The first time I visited I had an ale which I forget the name but was well kept.

Just a run of the mill spoons really

Next time I am in Staines I shall go to The George and give Arsenal fan my order and he will order me steak and chips and a pint of larger and I will drink the beer and eat the chips and the steak and tell him to stop freaking out the bar staff.
wurzel - 28 Jan 2015 14:46
Today I met arsenal fan 36 and asked him what motivates and inspires him,the reply i got was really surprising. He basically told me that whilst he went to panto one year he was lucky enough to meet his heroes the chuckle brothers and cannon and ball. Now these encounters only happen once he told me so you have to grab it whilst you can and he certainly did as he has started to use a lot of their material in real life. His one goal now is to appear in coach trip but is struggling to find a partner. Any takers?
Caskales - 10 Dec 2014 20:11
Large Wetherspoons at the end / start of the High Street right on the 1 way system.

Came here on a Tuesday night around 6.30 and it was half full on my visit with the usual 'spoons clientele. Very surly bar staff as well, a young lady that didn't crack a smile and a "manager" that looked bored sh*tless!

All 12 pumps had ales / ciders on, made up of 5x ciders, Ruddles, Weltons King or Queen, Hammerpot Brewery Shooting Star, Sixpenny Brewery India Pale Ale and 6D, Courage and GK Abbot Ale. I had

Nice building with large windows that open onto the one way system also has a rather impressive iron sweeping staircase up to the toilets.

Good range of beers, nice building, miserable looking staff.

lezford - 9 Oct 2013 13:55
" Where's the nearest Wetherspoons mate ? ", a man asked me on the street recently. Wetherspoons pubs have become like railway stations - ubiquitous, familiar, necessary to some. The George in Staines is a very typical JDW pub - cheap, crowded, a mixed clientele of young and old, rough and ready. Pay 5 for a beer and burger by all means - then play the post-meal game of deciding which contained the most water, the lager or the meat ?
The staff here are friendly and efficient even at busy times and that can make even the most cheerless place seem decent.
( Oddly, the pub across the road, The Town Hall, were offering the exact same thing as the George that night - curry & a drink, 5.59 - but were completely empty ! )
ShenaniganOFlanaghan - 29 Oct 2010 13:47
I would rather chew my own ears off than eat in this place likewise I would rather drink my own... well you know what I mean. This is a terrible place.
the_undertaker - 10 Oct 2010 15:40
Against my better judgement I had a sunday roast last week.
This was without doubt the worst meal I have ever had in a pub or restaurant.
The lamb seemed to be rather fatty congealed lump of meat without taste and unable to cut. The rest of the meal was completely bland and without any taste whatsoever.
Apart from the food the pub was soulless, scruffy and terrible service.
No matter how low the prices may be, I will never visit this pub again.

wanderin_star - 13 Sep 2010 11:12
Cannot stand this place, a proper wetherspoons, no atmosphere, rubbish beer and staff who couldnt care less. Not my cup of tea at all.
vanburkson - 16 Aug 2010 14:25
I dont like this boozer. Its dirty and the beer is awful. it may be cheap but thats not all its about is it. i prefer one of the better pub in staine to be honest and i only go in there to meet an old buddy.
ronnysdad - 21 Jul 2010 18:18
Not the best of Wetherspoons I have been in. Have to agree with Kazscott the rude group of drunk and rather racist old men. Do this pub no favours at all.
wyvernuk - 19 Feb 2010 14:22
Aweful pub. Full of scumbag's during the day, and strange gothic types in the evening. Staff are rude and lazy, service is rubbish
justaquickpint - 21 Jan 2010 16:46
A reasonable pub with decent choice of beer however spoiled by a group of mainly older men who seem to have taken up residence in the pub and spoil the atmosphere with their foul language and racism. Overheard a gravel voiced member of this group refer to the people of Haiti's earthquake victims as 'monkeys' and was so offended I had to leave. Its a pity that this minority can spoil what is otherwise a half-decent pub and I'm not the only person who has been offended by this group. I wish the management would do something to curb the behaviour of these people but I guess they spend a lot in the pub (I imagine funded by the taxpayer).
The East European staff are polite and helpful and the food is ok.

kazscott - 18 Jan 2010 21:12
Popped in few days ago to take advantage of their cheaper drinks - having overspent at xmas. Okay they may have cheaper drink but not much else going for it. Looking around at the customers reminded me of being in a DHSS waiting room. Least it reminded me of why I don't like Wetherspoons pub chain.
student_stu - 6 Jan 2010 12:13
I am not a fan of Witherspoons at all but there are some decent ones, this is not one of them though. Rude bar staff who are far to interested in chatting each other up. The toilets are a disgrace and I once had to write to their chief exec after being abused by one of their bar staff over a disability, I believe the comment was people like you should not come to pubs. Silly **** as like many others I was injured whilst protecting our country from a terrorist threat many years ago in NI. Sadly respect is not high on the agenda in this pub.
Graham_Kronebourg - 13 Oct 2009 15:22
It's a Wetherspoons... it's pretty much the same as any other Wetherspoons. If you go in expecting a typical Wetherspoons pub you won't be disappointed will you.
Isaac_Hock - 10 Oct 2009 16:17
Gone right down the dumper - popped in today, beer choice uninspiring and quality of all three of my pints were average to poor. Service with a scowl behind the bar, perpetuating the Eastern European bar staff stereotype. The inside remains scruffy and unkempt. Graffiti all over the toilet doors, for example.

A shame as this was a decent 'Spoons back in the day.
Quinno - 11 Jul 2009 19:46
Very un-inspiring beer choice when visited 01/06/09 & 03/06/09
robhealy - 8 Jun 2009 15:13
In here to-day for the first time in a few years. They had 6 beers on for the festival but nothing very startling. The strongest being Sinebrychoff Porter from Finland but not particularly exciting. Service was haphazard including clearing the tables despite the place not being very busy. (Considering JDW are showing 50 beers in their 'official programme', 4 of the beers available were not listed!). They still persisted in displaying the standard beers and there were many takers for the - weaker than water - Ruddles. Strange!!

The feeling I got was that there might have been a festival on but you wouldn't have thought so in this pub despite the coloured baloons. Even so not a bad pub for Wetherspoons.
wyndham - 16 Apr 2009 21:22
Good friendly crowd, great atmosphere, superb ales and cheap. A winner!
manonthemoon - 5 Apr 2009 19:53
Great beer, always a good range of local ales and stunning value at 1.89. Really worth paying the extra rather than opting for the 99p Ruddles option. Try the ones from Addlestone and Horsham. The staff are friendly - a mix of Continental and English. Interesting mix of clientelle, ranging from pensioners to students and virtually everything in between. Lovely to sit by the window with the doors open on a hot day.
chrish12345 - 25 Mar 2009 11:40
best pub in the high street for real ale but can seem to take forever to get served at times
paddy_seed - 16 Feb 2009 18:05
possibly the worst pub in staines. Poor service. No happy smiling faces.
the inside needs redecorating. Ask for a top up and all you get is your drink slammed back down on the counter. Have written to weatherspoons twice and twice received a standard letter. No improvement though
jackrussell - 9 Feb 2009 15:27
For the ale alone it is the best pub in Staines.
thenightwatchman - 22 Nov 2008 16:05
Servive .... well don't ask for anything out of the ordinary once you do get served and God forbid you want a short drink in an appropriate glass.
I think JD has two glass sizes - pints and halves (tumblers).
Oh well I guess I should be just happy with the prices and choice of ales...
Thevicar - 9 Mar 2008 13:13
The quality of the ale in here continues to impress, proves that in capable hands Wetherspoons pubs can be good.

Shame the inside is such a mess.

The place to go in Staines for a beer, very very good.
Quinno - 3 Feb 2008 21:40
Can get really packed, seeting is a struggle to find and buying drinks can take you a while. Otherwise a very nice pub, cheap prices. Probably one of the best Wetherspoons for its selection of real ale.
manonthemoon - 4 Jan 2008 04:18
riverboy suggests that I'm hard to please! On the contrary; give me a FULL pint and I'm as happy as a puppy in a streetful of lampposts! I'm pleased to hear that at least one customer gets a top-up without argument, but why should he have to ask anyway?
I wrote to JD Wetherspoon in November 07 to complain about the short measures in The George, and Kathy Long (Customer Services) wrote to say that steps would be taken to improve the service; still waiting, Kathy!
cjallen - 2 Jan 2008 15:19
cjallen is hard to please! Yes the service is pretty hopeless at times as with most Wetherspoons outlets, but a choice of five or more real ales always in great condition at 1.89 a pint is hard to beat. I've been using it since it opened and I've never been refused a top-up.
riverboy - 13 Nov 2007 14:03
Went in for a couple of beers on Sunday lunchtime. Very busy with the beer festival but only 2 people serving, both Eastern Europeans. They sseemed to be getting a few orders wrong, with people bringing drinks back. Beer was good especially the Anker Blonde from Belgium and Jennings Sneck Lifter. Always cheap but good quality.
Mothroy - 12 Nov 2007 08:04
I made the first review of this pub on this site on 1Apr03 before I went to do the grey nomad thing in Australasia, the Pacific islands, and the Far East. On return I find that things have not improved.
On 28Aug07 when I complained about short measure I was told by the manageress that THE LAW permitted the serving of nineteen ounces in a twenty-ounce glass, and if I didn't like it I could go elsewhere. So I did: again!
On 25Oct07 I chanced it once more, and saw guest beers clearly marked at 1.69; so I ordered one and was asked for 1.89. Then I saw the small print; the lower price applies only to Wednesdays. This is, at the very least, deliberately misleading. And on top of that I was served a short measure yet again.
The beer may be cheaper than elsewhere in Staines, but when I ask for a pint I want twenty ounces. It seems that the only way to get a fair go from this lot is to buy bottles.
I've been in some very good Wetherspoon pubs, especially in the north of England, but this dump is beyond belief.
cjallen - 26 Oct 2007 11:46
no atmos. v. chavvy and navvy, could easily get set upon by a 60 year old arm wrestler with leather skin and tattoos!
unclesam - 9 Oct 2007 17:58
This JDW is a shining beacon for real ale drinkers in the area. Beers are always top-notch, great value and always a good selection. The rating is unfair and seems to eminate from the previous management style which has fortunately changed for the better during the past year.
bobinman - 28 May 2007 09:14
Beer quality and range has notably improved under new duty manager, and he has no quibble about refusing to serve the obviously inebreated either.

Inside is in desperate need of an overhaul, the tables are shot to pieces and the decor is getting pretty shabby. Roll on refurb...if it ever happens!

Quinno - 1 Mar 2007 23:37
Sadly it would appear that the management of this pub do not treat their disabled customers in the same way as their non disabled customers. I find it very irritating that disabled customers have to ask to use the toilet as it is kept locked. Very poor. I have written to Tim Martin who is the head of this pub group and will hopefully be able to respond positively after receiving his response.
Graham_S - 27 Feb 2007 20:00
Well no sign of the Lloyds Number One yet...perhaps the thought of driving away the old men made them realise they'd lose half their takings, especially as the Kids are now drinking and watching the footy at the Town Hall over the road which is a far better set-up for that kind of customer.

However this place does need a good clean-out, regardless of how the Lloyds idea pans out. It is getting fairly smelly and tatty round the edges.
Quinno - 3 Sep 2006 16:46
If it rebrands as a Lloyds - where will the dancefloor be ? And will they keep the upstairs as non-smoking?

I'm not convinced it'll work - I used to be a Shift Manager there...
robhealy - 30 Jul 2006 16:54
errrm, if it "rebrands" as a Lloyds, surly it will attract the chavs?

The one in Twickenham certainly does.
Zod - 25 Jul 2006 14:43
Good.

It will keep out the old people. And the chavs.
anonymous - 18 Jul 2006 18:52
If this isn't enough to make you want to get out of Staines, then good luck to you. Enjoy.
rahrahrah - 14 Apr 2006 02:09
Well you can enjoy yourself looking at the pictures on the t.v it'll makes a change from the decor.
El_Capitain - 28 Feb 2006 13:07
Subtitles are okay as long as you can read. Me, I'm illiterate so the world is a blissfull mystery to me.
MrG - 28 Feb 2006 08:32
This place is probably the cheapest place in Staines with quite a variety of drinks available, they have Kopperberg Cider which is a good addition. They now have plasma screens to enable to read the news as they don't put any sound on just subtitles.
El_Capitain - 23 Feb 2006 13:02
Long live the Wethermen ! Red faced and ruddy putting the world to right with ill-informed views whilst spending all of their(mostly)waking hours quaffing the bargain/guest ale of the week !
I cant wait to join them.
pjj - 20 Feb 2006 15:00
My previous comments (08/01/2006) refer to the Manageress being very good. She has apparently since left.
arthur256 - 12 Feb 2006 22:53
A horrible, horrible pub, do not ever go in there, the worst JD wetherspoons i have ever been in. The staff unfriendly, it is far too cliquey, people have their allocated seats and you do not feel welcome. So don't bother with it!
reedy83 - 30 Jan 2006 21:03
Food about average for JDW, sometimes staff don't know what the options are - e.g. item substitutions to comply with diets. Breakfast sometimes arrives missing tomato and mushroom - but they follow promptly if you tell them. Manageress very good, when she is around, and her deputy is good - its the others (who presumably cover staff shortages) who can be a bit unpredictable. Range of real ales usually good to excellent.
arthur256 - 8 Jan 2006 11:47
Now open until midnight during the week and 1 a.m. at weekends. There is no atmosphere in this pub at all, but as previous posts have stated it's cheap and has a good range of real ales, there were eight on last night including beers from Everards and Dorset brewery.
snowdog2112 - 27 Nov 2005 10:52
Ahhhhhhh, what can I say, home away from home. Its not the prettiest and its got no music, but if you're after a nic cheap meeting point before you go out on the town then you could ask for no mre. Nice bar staff and a homely atmosphere.
luigi69 - 11 Oct 2005 13:16
We have been going to this pub for almost a year now. The only reason why we go there is because it is cheap, nothing else.

The bar staff have absolutley no manners or customer service skills.

The glasses are always dirty and when you ask for a clean one it is as if you are asking them to do open heart surgery.

But it is cheap, so I suppose you can't get everything in life...
anonymous - 21 Sep 2005 14:43
This pub is great for a meeting point and a few cheap drinks before going on!! They also sell Fruli !!
El_Capitain - 19 Sep 2005 15:29
Useful pub for a cheap few. Food reminds me of the stuff my mum used to make (she couldn't cook, for years I thought we were pagans because of all the burnt offerings on the table.) Toilets usually clean so a handy place to go and crimp one off. Does get rather full sometimes though.
MrG - 25 Aug 2005 10:47
Boycotted the place last year when they made a song and dance about giving me a clean glass to replace the dirty one they had given me with my pitcher. Also meals usually had one ingrediant missing when it turned up. Burnt.

Some JDW's are great, others are poor, depending on the management. This one was poor :o(

But at least they had a decent ale selection.
Quinno - 22 Aug 2005 15:33
cheap, yep definitly!

always slightly worried about the old geezers that sit from afternoon to evening in here. alone.

apart from that, cheap like all wetherspoons, but can get PACKED on a weekend, thus AGES to get served.

My advice: buy two rounds at once!
anonymous - 9 Aug 2005 00:43
It's an ok place to start the evening cos it's cheap..!!

anonymous - 6 Jun 2005 11:05
Is_it if you're still in staines at drinmking up time you need to get a life!
anonymous - 16 Feb 2005 10:52
Let me set the scene, you're eating your lunch which isn't what you wanted anyway because they've run out of chicken wings, and you're just tucking into your chicken wrap when you look up to see the hobbit that created it for you. His uniform is filthy, his hair is greasy, he leaves behind him a lingering stench thats suffocates you while you comprehend his grubby little unwashed hands man handling your tortilla! Then pudding arrives, you've been looking forward to this....chocolate fudge cake and ice cream, but it looks odd, and the barman says sorry we didn't have any ice cream so they've put cream on it for you, thanks i thought, i HATE cream! I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than eat it now! Needless to say haven't eaten here since, but you can't beat the George on cheap drinks, if you can handle the queues on a fri/sat night, but I do think they're way overdue on an H & S inspection!
anonymous - 16 Feb 2005 09:34
how can anyone possibly write a comment about the george. its a skanky old weatherspoons. it has no personality. nothing to comment on!
anonymous - 15 Feb 2005 16:39
It's Wetherspoon's, what do you expect. If you are still there at chucking out time then you need to get a life and go somewhere better like Baroosh or Cocco for a late beer.

Is an ok place to have a few beers before moving on, or on Sunday's just to avoid being dragged around the shops.

Is_it - 31 Jan 2005 13:36
the bouncers here are a joke. they ID the people blatanly over 20, and let in groups of 16 year olds. the sooner this place gets raided on a Friday night, the better!
anonymous - 19 Jan 2005 22:49
Wetherspoons run very good pubs, but this is most definately NOT one of them, Dirty tables, very poor staff - need I go on, you would be better off going to one of the other many pubs in Staines.
beerlover - 19 Oct 2004 09:13
staff? i thought they were there for decortation. they don't do any work, and when they do bother, they normally get it wrong. waste of space, make it self service!
gee - 18 Oct 2004 23:49
the staff shouldnt go there to enjoy themselves!! they're there to provide good service towards their customers....which they dont!!
asif - 26 Sep 2004 16:49
It is disappointing to read a lot of the comments made about The George having previously worked their from its original opening night. Then we (the staff) enjoyed a good rapour with the public and took constructive complaints seriously and acted accordingly. Sadly since then such staff as Richard, Lisa, Ripper, Geordie Nigel, Brian, Bernie, Matt, Clairol amongst others left, I often here things aren't what they used to be, however it will always hold a special memory in my thoughts.
Annon - 8 Sep 2004 15:29
the george is a typical wetherspoons in the fact that it has no music or entertainment, thus this is often depicted as having no atmosphere.what would you like to see?barstaff dancing on tables?! if you look closely you will see the staff enjoy themselves behind the bar, and you will notice great staff interaction. im sure they are pleasant to the right customers, but if you serve customers who are rude and impatient and hardly friendly, is there a point tolerating it?during the daythe pub is full of old people mostly who enjoy their ales (without stereotyping) so they are hardly going to create an exciting atmosphere are they. the staff work hard and should deserve some credit.
anonymous - 4 Sep 2004 23:58
Went in on friday, and waited 25 minutes to be served, the lass got the order wrong twice....and then tried to charge me 4.00 for the orange juice! I'll be drinking else where when in Staines.
james - 28 Aug 2004 21:20
I always find that being polite to bar staff helps a lot.
Si - 18 Aug 2004 15:55
I cannot believe how AWFUL the staff are - rude, stupid and generally offensive. They can't remember a simple order, and charge differnce prices for the same drinks.
jeany - 30 Jul 2004 01:33
99p drinks is just asking for trouble. As with all Wetherspoons, the place is poorly decorated, no atmosphere and attracts local (trailer park) residents. Poorly cooked microwaved food is the norm.
Zod - 19 Jul 2004 15:08
Don't go to this pub if you are (1) hungry; or (2) thirsty - you'll die of hunger and thirst before you are served. And its not just once, as a local I've experienced this time and again (hoping on the off chance they'd got new staff). Why go back? Fantastic location. The Blue Anchor opposite is definately recommended!!!
JB - 16 Jul 2004 11:15
'busy' is an excuse for poor service? I think Wetherspoons need to dish out some courses in public service.
jenna - 15 Jul 2004 19:06
exactly. its cheap and thats why people go in there. certainly not for the pleasant atttude of the staff!!
sam - 15 Jul 2004 14:17
People go to the George because it is cheap, and this can be shown by the type of clientel that is attracted!
David Coleman - [email protected] - 15 Jul 2004 14:06
oh dear here we go again!!!
The service may seem slow to you, but that is because it is very very busy & why is that do you think? because people want to come to the George because it is one of the best pubs in staines and part of a very successful company!!!!
anonymous - 15 Jul 2004 12:35
I agree with david the pub is rubbish, and bar staff are useless. There are no hooks to hang my shopping. Why do we keep going back??
Siobhan, kevin & mario - 15 Jul 2004 12:31
With all Weather Spoons it is cheep but the service is so slow, expecally on a weekend!! The george is no exception!! it has v.little atmosphere, the food is poor and queue for the bar make you feel like you are queueing up for a UN hand out. aas the other pubs in the area describe it JDWISDULL>.
David Coleman - [email protected] - 15 Jul 2004 11:20
I refer you to my earlier comment, 'you're exactly the attitude of the staff. I work in a local pub so I KNOW how to treat bar staff, and I certainaly know their faults. A little less attitude from you and alot more training. Good day to you.

(a30 - 23 May 2004 13:32)'
I don't drink in the george anymore, you've really put me off.
a30 - 19 Jun 2004 22:52
Just one question a30 if you find this place has slow rude bar staff - why do you go in there....
I have worked for a couple of Spoon's pubs and I will tell you something, working there on a Friday or Saturday night is hard work... its easy to complain until you have had a go yourself

Diego - 14 Jun 2004 11:21
Thankyou Adam and Lil. Yes its nice (!!) to see that others have experienced the same level of service I have in The George. The attitude the 'staff' are displaying and this site, is a typical example of how they treat customers.
a30 - 7 Jun 2004 14:04
In response to a30s comment, i realise that people can be rude to members of staff, but i am a civilised member of society and am simply making the observation that your door staff are generally offensive and some members of your bar staff are rude and abrupt with customers. Every bar has rude customers, but they dont all slag it off.....why is that?
Adam O'Connor - [email protected] - 7 Jun 2004 12:44
only a suggestion a30, but why dont you make yourself known to the bar staff & management so we can maybe address where we are allegedly going so wrong, or dont you have the balls!!!!! Just to emphasise what my manager wrote last week - we all work our arses off every single day and try are hardest to give the best customer service possible, but when we come across people like you it makes our job alot harder than it already is.
Staff @ The George - 26 May 2004 18:58
A30 i seriously doubt that you have ordered your drink through every bar associate at The George, so surely its a lie to say they get it wrong everytime? You have to give respect to people who work hard serving sometimes rude, sometimes abusive people for little money. Who have to contend with customers waiting to be served and sighing even though they are moving faster than workers in all the other pubs i have visited. They have to contend with customers forgetting what they want, not knowing what they want and then getting arsey when someone is served before them. If you were a nice, non-judgemental person then im sure you would be treated as such. The George and its customers usually get on well and a few of the regulars are actually (god forbid) friends who laughs can be shared with. There is a reason for this-maybe you are too ignorant and full of yourself to see? just a suggestion. P.s. dictionary love, use it.

I certainly agree with a30. The bar staff are slow and very often get orders wrong, I agree some people can be rude, but this doesnt mean that EVERYONE is rude. When I've waited to order my drink due to a lack of barstaff, I expect them to get it right.
lil - 23 May 2004 13:45
you're exactly the attitude of the staff. I work in a local pub so I KNOW how to treat bar staff, and I certainaly know their faults. A little less attitude from you and alot more training. Good day to you.
a30 - 23 May 2004 13:32
I happen to think that the staff are very polite, maybe if you (a30) treated them with the respect that they deserve they would return the favour. Maybe the best drinking place for you is on banks of the Thames with all the other lowlife!!!!
anonymous - 22 May 2004 18:57
any idiot can go to uni. it doesnt make you clever love!! instead of slagging your customers off how about a bit more time spent on staff training?
a30 - 22 May 2004 00:55
so even thought they get my drink wrong EVERY time and I smile politly and say 'sorry i didnt order that' I'm being rude and slagging them off? I like the george, I like the doormen, but if a simple drinks order cant be taken then that doesnt say much for the staff does it.
a30 - 22 May 2004 00:54
Many people may slag off the george but it has been a place where most of the teenage inhabitance of staines grew up. admittedly not the most classy place in town but a good giggle if you know the people!!
Louise Stennett - 17 May 2004 19:48
ok, you have all managed to slag off the staff and the pub well it's time for a bit of home truth. a30 said that the staff aren't exactly mensa material well if you even bothered to find out the majority of the staff are at university doing various degrees ranging from media studies, chemistry, biology, and one of the italian guys has overcome the language barrier and completed his degree and is now doing a masters degree in business and finance so rather than slag them off leave them alone!! Also everyone claims that the staff are rude in this pub, maybe you should take a good long hard look at yourself. Treat people as you would like to be treated, if you are rude, abusive or agressive to the staff are they supposed to take it? No I don't think so. The staff in this pub work extremely hard and on a busy night which I am sure many of you have seen a busy night in this pub you will appreciate the pressure they work under, they don't get paid a fortune but they certainly don't get paid to take abuse so think about that next time you are rude to the staff. The staff are a joy to work with and are some of the nicest people i have had the pleasure to meet and work with.

The staff are rude and unfriendly, the food is utterly unacceptable, and the constant pestering of people who are clearly in their twenties is invasive, and annoying...dont bother going. Cheap drink rubbish place
adam o'connor - 24 Apr 2004 10:05
Beer is cheap, for a reason, you ask for a pint of Kronenburg and you get a pint of sarsons vinegar,
stick to bottles at least its not tampered with,

manageress is rude, service is lowsy, you want a good pub in staines try the Hobgoblin.
Deano - 23 Apr 2004 19:22
I happen to like the givnor, Grant. His missus 'Babs' is an acquired taste though!!! Has barred more customers than any other pub in middlesex. FOR SERIOUS ALE DRINKERS: The beer is always in tip-top condition and there is now always a beer from Loddon Brewery on the bar....good stuff!!!
Bob The Binman - 14 Apr 2004 18:34
cheap drink. bar staff arent exactly mensa material i have to say. one fit bounce called M.
a30 - 17 Feb 2004 21:01
ok for a cheap drink and a nice relaxed atmosphere... friendly bouncers but rubbish bar staff especially the manager who is just plain rude!!
bob - 11 Feb 2004 15:59
Love the new carpet, and whats wrong with the staff?????
anonymous - 19 Jan 2004 15:36
this pub is like a libary, its full of old people who spend all there pension on cheap bitter and talk about the war. the staff are the rudest (prob because they work for weatherspoons)
Brad Justice - 15 Jan 2004 15:10
Good way to start a night out, problem is where to go afterwards. Wetherspoons = cheap food and drink. Go with a few people and be in a good mood. Staff can be a bit crap. Love the Millionaire machine though.
Ronnie Rosenthal - 9 Jan 2004 01:42
Not too bad a pub, usually r start 2 the evening, the cheap alcohol being a bonus. Wudnt hang around though, no music or anythin 2 do, bit pointless really. Couple of the bouncers r decent guys, one manager is a witch tho
Kim - 17 Sep 2003 16:17
full of old men. but cheap drinks so i guess thats ok. stay 4 a couple then leave!!
anonymous - 31 Jul 2003 21:03
As mentioned, the lack of drinking up time at this place is a joke. They also have this habit of turning the lights up really brightly come 11.05 to try and put people off hanging around. Most uncivilized.
Wynne - 11 Jun 2003 13:58
no music ,pooltables
just people getting drunk
on cheap beer starring out
of the windows.
phil - 27 May 2003 21:29
A good choice of beers, but the staff of this pub seem to want their customers off the premises within five minutes of closing time. When I asked about the twenty minutes drinking-up time available, I was told that I could always drink somewhere else!
So I have done!
