Still not re-opened despite new furnishing and noticed the police were parked outside yesterday for a good period. On the grounds it looks like the place has been taken over by hippy squatter types this fails to surprise. Probably Polski types too!

Hasn't reopened and looks like a bunch of travellers have moved in/squatted.

mcroyal - 1 Sep 2011 22:43
A pub surely missed in the Reading area; re-opens Saturday 23rd July 2011. Oh yes!
Trapdoor - 21 Jul 2011 20:30
now a mosque.

The Coopers has been closed and will form part of a new development of the old Bristol and West Arcade. However, due to the current financial situation this could be on hold for a long time. A bar is proposed in the new scheme but details are not available at the moment. Try The Hobgoblin round the corner.

Closed on 14 July 2010 - awaiting new owners.

Was still shut on my visit to Reading of Sat 26th June 2010. Looking through the window, most of the old pub furniture appears to still be in situ at the boozer with no sign of any building work or indeed any other activity going on.

Currently closed, apparently for refurb though nothing seems to actually be happening

Old pub, nice bit of space inside, especially the left side which is homely (especially at xmas). Beer quality is not the greatest, but they do stock some beers not found elsewhere.
Regulars are yobs - witnessed a few racial/religious comments against a mate for being muslim (which he's not), bar staff ignored it, though one of his mates stopped him once he realised my mate was sikh, so not all bad.

I walked past this place a few times on my visit to Reading earlier in the year and just felt it wasn't really the sort of place that a non-regular would be welcomed. I took the charming advice of bcfcdarren and effed off somewhere else. I'm glad I did and I suspect so is he.

I've given up trying to get a Sunday lunchtime pint here since the doors are always firmly bolted even when ever other boozer in town is open. Frankly its not worth the wait.

Don't say bad things about the Coopers Arms if u havn't got anything nice 2 say don't say it at all, its a great pub to be in

This pub has a quality jukebox, a polite range of bar staff yes ok the pub is old and dirty and dusty but so are all old pubs in reading at christmas this pub shines, all the beer lines are cleaned and they have 2 ales on if there not on then the lines are bein cleaned but this has got potential and is 1 of the best reading pubs

What's the opposite of the phrase "going from strength to strength"? This place fits the bill.

Apparently will be bulldozed through at some point as a walkway for the Silver Street redevelopment. At this rate, no great loss.

Shame, as it could be a real jewel in the crown with the right ownership and a bit of cash spent on it.

Three times I have been here, only once did they have any ale on tap. I don't know what's going on.
drzoon - 16 Aug 2008 13:06
If they spent as much time and trouble looking after their beer as they do on their Christmas decorations, the world would be a better place.

This is a good Pub,I all ways describe it to people as a vilage pub in the town, except for Saturday afternoon when Reading are playing at home, busy, noisy but good natured.
DORISBANANA - 7 Sep 2007 09:10
Range and quality of ales up and down more than Abi Titmusses knickers recently, which is a shame as I like this place a lot. Quality jukebox too, put some Whigfield on.

The last time this place could be called decent was in the 80's

Great pub, especially on Sunday evenings when they have a really fun stand-up comedy night. Highly recommended.

I went in here over the weekend and took an age to get served by a very drunk woman (landlady?). She was quite rude and the staff weren't a lot better. The locals seem okay. Jukebox good. Food average.

Enjoyable pub, although last time I was there someone did let off a smoke bomb inside the premises, meaning I couldn't actually see my friends on the same table.

Good juke box and a high quality of ale. A definite to visit.

I went there for the 1st time tonight - but never again. Lots of racist chanting, and generally offensive behaviour by gentlemen(?) with short haircuts. I would have expected the staff to have dealt with this more pro-actively. It could have sparked off an ugly scene, and is disappointing behaviour. Not a place for a peaceful pint on a Saturday evening. Love to hear from other regulars that this evening was an exception.

A very good bar/pub in the town centre, some decent (though mainstream) ales on in good nick, and excellent atmosphere for a Saturday evening with a good jukey. Well worth a visit.
Quinno - 20 Sep 2006 23:04
At least it's not like the typical drinking establishments in Reading town centre, but it's all in all a rather average boozer.

Well the jukebox has Numan on it so its not all bad. Likeable despite the fact the male toilets should have a biohazard warning on the door. Still the ladies is fine. The bar staff could cheer up a bit too - its almost like a wake without the cheer.
Trapdoor - 12 Mar 2006 22:34
One of the few proper town centre pubs. I think this is Green King. We drink here because it's quiet and there's no bother with the other locals - BUT - It's always filthy (overflowing ashtrays, tables not cleared for over an hour after the customers leave) and the bar is desperately understaffed!! The value here lies in having somewhere to drink where you can actually have an undisturbed conversation.

Recently refurbished town centre pub - interesting wood panelling in the no smoking area.
